As Shepard recalled it, Cooper pointed out that hearing about a setback after 16 years of sobriety could help people more than hearing only about uninterrupted success. The disclosure came in the podcast’s “Day 7” episode, released September 25, 2020.
What did Bradley Cooper say to Dax Shepard?
Shepard later recounted that he called Cooper after relapsing and described his hesitation about telling listeners. In a third-party transcript of a later conversation with Chris Pine, Shepard attributed this point to Cooper: “You being sober for 16 years and being married to Kristen Bell is not very helpful to people.” Shepard said Cooper suggested that sharing what happened could be more useful to people he hoped to encourage.
The transcript also renders Shepard recalling Cooper’s line, “You eating shit after 16 years of doing this is really helpful to people.” These are words attributed to Cooper through Shepard’s recollection as rendered in that transcript—not an independently verified statement from Cooper. The available account supports saying Cooper encouraged Shepard to speak publicly; it does not establish that Cooper caused, treated, or managed the relapse.
When did Shepard disclose the relapse?
The recording and release dates are different. Shepard recorded the “Day 7” episode on September 21, 2020, and it was released on September 25. In it, he said he had resumed taking opioids after 16 years of sobriety and was seven days sober at the time of recording. The Los Angeles Times reported on the disclosure on September 25; Good Morning America’s contemporaneous account gives the recording date and sobriety point.

Why was the disclosure difficult?
Shepard said he feared being judged and worried that listeners would feel misled. He had publicly discussed sobriety, so telling his audience that he had resumed taking opioids meant confronting the possibility that people would see his earlier account differently.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Shepard connected his opioid use to painkillers taken while recovering from a motorcycle accident in August 2020, while also saying that the problem had begun escalating earlier. He later recalled that his pill addiction started spiraling around the time his father died in 2012; that is Shepard’s own recollection, not an independently established clinical history.

The public account has two layers: contemporaneous reporting on the 2020 disclosure and Shepard’s later recollection of Cooper’s advice. The first establishes what Shepard said in “Day 7” and when he said it; the second is the source for Cooper’s role in his decision to tell the story. No independent statement from Cooper about this specific advice is established in the cited accounts.
