In a May 20, 2025 interview, co-showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang explained why the writers chose those endings and previewed the series finale, which had not yet aired when they spoke.
How Nick and Lawrence die in “Execution”
The penultimate episode takes place as the rebellion has taken over Boston. Serena gives June and the rebels the commanders’ plan, and June persuades Lawrence to put a bomb on the plane carrying the commanders. Nick arrives at the hangar and boards at the last moment. The plane explodes in midair as June watches.
The episode does not settle whether Nick understood the danger before boarding. Tuchman said Nick might have sensed something was wrong in Lawrence’s remarks, but left open whether he knew there was a bomb on the plane. Chang described the death partly through June’s perspective; neither showrunner presented Nick’s boarding as a confirmed decision to die.
Why the writers chose these endings
Tuchman said the writers settled on the characters’ endings early, while breaking season six. The season was designed to test and challenge characters and show what they had—or had not—learned. For Nick, that meant confronting the contradiction between his history as June’s protector and his role as a commander in Gilead. Tuchman put the point starkly: “there’s no such thing as a good commander.”

Nick’s choice and its consequences
Chang resisted reading Nick’s arc as a simple transformation from hero to villain. In her interpretation, he made a pressured, split-second mistake after Commander Wharton threatened his life and invoked Nick’s son. Nick did not foresee that his decision would lead to women being killed. That explanation gives context to the choice without erasing its consequences or his participation in Gilead.
Lawrence’s place in the decision
June’s persuasion puts Lawrence in the chain of events that leads to the explosion, and he dies on the plane alongside Nick. Tuchman’s account of the season’s design frames the ending as part of the characters’ tests, rather than as an isolated twist. The interview did not offer a separate, detailed explanation of Lawrence’s death beyond that broader framing.

What the showrunners said about the finale
Their comments were a preview, not a review: the interview appeared May 20, 2025, before the following week’s series finale. Tuchman called it “a really emotional, beautiful, moving experience.” He said Bruce Miller wrote the finale and Elisabeth Moss directed it, and described its resolutions as honest and organic to the show’s storytelling.
Chang said Miller wanted to avoid “series finale-itis”—a finale that ties every thread neatly in a bow. She characterized episode 9 as a large-scale climax and episode 10 as a quieter denouement about what happened the next day. Those were the showrunners’ expectations before the finale aired, not a claim about how the finished episode ultimately played.

Why Taylor Swift’s song plays in the episode
Elisabeth Moss, who directed “Execution,” and editor Wendy Hallam Martin added Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” to the director’s cut. Tuchman said it began as a placeholder because the team doubted they could secure the rights, then Swift and her team gave permission for its use.
