HAIM is the Los Angeles sibling trio of Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim. The sisters began performing with their parents in a family cover band, then developed separate musical experience before turning their shared chemistry into a major recording career. Este’s bass and vocals, Danielle’s lead singing, guitar, drums, and production, and Alana’s guitar, keyboards, and vocals give the group a broader identity than the phrase “sister band” suggests.

Who are the Haim sisters?

HAIM is the Los Angeles band formed by sisters Este Haim, Danielle Haim, and Alana Haim. Este plays bass and sings, Danielle is the group’s lead vocalist and principal guitarist, and Alana contributes guitar, keyboards, vocals, and additional instrumental parts. Their music is often described as rock, but that label alone is too narrow: HAIM combines guitar-band writing with pop, R&B, synth-pop, and contemporary alternative production.

The sisters’ story began long before their first major records. They grew up in a musical household, performed with their parents in the family cover band Rockinhaim, and gradually turned years of informal playing into a professional career. That history matters because HAIM was not an assembled “sister act.” It developed from a shared musical education, while each sister also built a distinct identity as a musician.

From Rockinhaim to HAIM

The sisters’ parents, Moti and Donna Haim, played music, and the family performed together while Este, Danielle, and Alana were growing up. Those performances gave the three sisters a common repertoire and an instinctive familiarity with one another’s timing, phrasing, and musical habits.

HAIM’s professional development was gradual rather than an overnight success story. The sisters experimented, played early gigs, and pursued individual interests before committing fully to the band. Danielle’s work as a touring guitarist for artists including Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas gave her substantial experience with the pressures of professional live performance. Este and Alana also spent time developing their own education, interests, and musical skills.

That delayed consolidation became part of HAIM’s strength. By the time the trio began releasing music and appearing at major festivals, its chemistry had been developed over years—both onstage and within the family. The result was a band with a shared foundation but clearly differentiated members.

Meet the Haim sisters

Este Haim: bass, vocals, and stage presence

Este Haim is the eldest sister and HAIM’s bassist and vocalist. Her bass playing is a prominent part of the band’s live identity, supplying rhythmic weight while helping shape the movement of the songs. She is not simply an accompanist: her vocals and performance personality are also central to the group’s character.

Este is often the most immediately theatrical member onstage, but it is more accurate to describe her documented musical role and vivid performance presence than to assign her an unsupported leadership position within the trio. HAIM’s public creative identity is collaborative, with the sisters bringing different instincts to the same material.

Danielle Haim: lead vocals, guitar, drums, and production

Danielle is the middle sister and HAIM’s lead vocalist and principal guitarist. She also contributes drums and production. Before the band became her main public project, she toured as a guitarist with Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas, experience that helped establish her as a professional musician outside the family group.

Danielle is closely associated with HAIM’s arrangements and the practical architecture of its songs. Interviews and music coverage connect her with structure, percussion, and production decisions, but those responsibilities should be understood as part of the sisters’ collaboration rather than evidence that she creates the records alone.

Alana Haim: guitar, keyboards, vocals, and film work

Alana is the youngest sister. Her roles include guitar, keyboards, vocals, and other instrumental parts. Those contributions help HAIM move beyond a straightforward bass-and-guitar rock setup. Keyboards, layered vocals, rhythm guitar, and changing instrumental responsibilities allow the band’s arrangements to expand and shift from song to song.

Alana also developed a parallel screen career. She appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, giving her a significant acting credit alongside her work in HAIM. The film connection is an adjacent part of her profile, not a replacement for her identity as a working musician.

What kind of music does HAIM make?

HAIM is best understood as a genre-fluid pop-rock band. The group uses familiar rock-band instruments—guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals—but places them in productions that can draw on classic rock, R&B, synth-pop, and modern alternative music.

Several features define the band’s sound:

  • Rhythm-forward arrangements: Bass, drums, and percussion often carry as much identity as the guitar parts.
  • Close vocal interplay: The sisters’ voices can work as a lead-and-harmony unit, reinforcing the familial chemistry without making the songs feel like a novelty act.
  • Polished production: HAIM’s records balance live-band energy with layered, studio-shaped textures.
  • Flexible instrumentation: The sisters move among guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, and vocals according to what each song needs.
  • Collaborative songwriting: Their different strengths—rhythm, melody, lyrics, arrangement, and texture—meet within the same songs.

Calling HAIM purely “indie rock” misses the group’s pop and R&B influences. Calling it purely pop is equally incomplete because guitar-band performance, live interplay, and rock instrumentation remain fundamental to the music.

HAIM albums in chronological order

Days Are Gone (2013)

Days Are Gone is HAIM’s debut studio album and the clearest starting point for a chronological listen. It followed the group’s early EP and festival breakthrough period, establishing the blend of guitar-based songwriting, prominent rhythm, vocal harmonies, and polished pop instincts that became associated with the band.

The album reached number one on the UK Official Albums Chart. For new listeners, it provides the most direct introduction to the sound that first brought the sisters broad attention.

Something to Tell You (2017)

Something to Tell You continued HAIM’s development toward layered, studio-shaped pop-rock. The record reflects the sisters’ collaborative writing and recording process while giving more space to their individual creative specialties.

The album reached number two on the UK Official Albums Chart. It is a useful second step for listeners who want to hear how the band expanded its production and arrangement ideas after its debut.

Women In Music Pt. III (2020)

Women In Music Pt. III broadened HAIM’s critical profile. It combines rock instrumentation with R&B, pop, and more experimental production choices, showing how comfortable the sisters had become with moving outside a conventional straight-ahead rock format.

The album received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, while “The Steps” was nominated for Best Rock Performance. The Album of the Year recognition was particularly notable: the Recording Academy described the album as making history for an all-female rock group in that category. That wording is best preserved rather than expanded into a broader claim about every possible definition of a rock group or all-female band.

I quit (2025)

I quit is HAIM’s fourth studio album. Apple Music lists its release date as June 20, 2025, with 15 songs and a running time of approximately 53 minutes. The track list is:

  1. “Gone”
  2. “All over me”
  3. “Relationships”
  4. “Down to be wrong”
  5. “Take me back”
  6. “Love you right”
  7. “The farm”
  8. “Lucky stars”
  9. “Million years”
  10. “Everybody’s trying to figure me out”
  11. “Try to feel my pain”
  12. “Spinning”
  13. “Cry”
  14. “Blood on the street”
  15. “Now it’s time”

The album is the latest major release in this profile and a current milestone in HAIM’s recording career. The Recording Academy lists I quit as a nominee for the 2026 Best Rock Album Grammy, extending the band’s history of Grammy recognition.

For collectors: readers interested in HAIM I quit vinyl should check the exact edition, seller, availability, and shipping details at the time of purchase. HAIM’s Grammy nominations and recognition

HAIM received a Best New Artist Grammy nomination in 2015. The group later earned major recognition for Women In Music Pt. III, which was nominated for Album of the Year. “The Steps” also received a Best Rock Performance nomination.

With I quit listed as a 2026 Best Rock Album nominee, the band’s recognition now spans multiple stages of its career: its early emergence, its critically ambitious third album, and its latest documented studio release. The nominations also reflect the difficulty of placing HAIM in a single genre box. The sisters’ work can be rooted in rock while still incorporating pop structures, R&B rhythms, and electronic or synth-based textures.

Alana Haim and Licorice Pizza

Alana Haim’s role in Licorice Pizza is the clearest example of one sister extending her work beyond the band. The 2021 film gave Alana a prominent acting role and introduced her to audiences who may not have first encountered her through HAIM’s records.

Her acting career is best treated as a parallel thread. The central story remains her musicianship and the group’s long-running collaboration, while Licorice Pizza shows that the sisters’ individual creative lives do not end when they leave the stage. Streaming availability for the film changes by country and over time, so viewers should check a current legal service in their territory rather than rely on a permanent platform listing.

Why the sister relationship matters to HAIM

The family connection is important because it shaped the band’s musical vocabulary. Este, Danielle, and Alana played together as children, absorbed many of the same references through family performances, and learned over time how to divide responsibilities in a professional group.

But the strongest account of HAIM does not reduce the band to the fact that its members are related. Este’s bass and vocal character, Danielle’s lead singing, guitar, drums, and production work, and Alana’s guitar, keyboards, vocals, and additional parts are complementary rather than interchangeable. The band works because the sisters share history while bringing different instincts to rhythm, melody, arrangement, and performance.

That balance—intimacy without sameness—is the key to understanding HAIM. Their sibling identity explains part of the chemistry, but years of practice, outside experience, songwriting, recording, and touring explain why that chemistry has remained professionally durable.

Where should a new listener start?

  1. Start with Days Are Gone for the band’s breakthrough-era sound and earliest major album.
  2. Move to Something to Tell You to hear the sisters develop their layered pop-rock production.
  3. Listen to Women In Music Pt. III for the group’s most visible expansion into R&B, pop, and more experimental textures.
  4. Finish with I quit to hear the latest chapter documented here, including its 15-song, approximately 53-minute album sequence.

Listeners who prefer physical editions can look for Days Are Gone on vinyl or CD as an entry point, or compare available I quit vinyl and CD formats. Edition names and availability are not permanent, so confirm current details before ordering.
