If you have about three hours and a tolerance for operatic gunfights, Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is currently listed as free to watch with ads on Tubi in the United States. The 1966 epic remains one of the most influential Westerns ever made—not because it offers a simple hero story, but because it turns greed, betrayal, silence, music, and suspense into grand visual theater.
Streaming rights can change, and Tubi’s availability label may vary by location or account. But for viewers who can access it, this is an unusually convenient way to revisit a landmark of the spaghetti Western.
What is free to watch?
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly—also known by its Italian title, Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo—is currently listed on Tubi’s U.S. title page as a 1966 R-rated Western, drama, and action film. The page lists Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach among the principal cast and Sergio Leone as director. Its availability label has displayed “Coming Aug 1,” so viewers should check the title page directly rather than assume the film will remain available indefinitely. [c002]
JustWatch’s U.S. listing, checked July 29, 2026, also reported free, ad-supported access through The Roku Channel and YouTube Free, in addition to subscription and rental options. Those listings can lag behind real-time changes and may vary by geography, so Tubi is the primary availability reference here. [c001][c002]

Why is it considered one of the greatest Westerns?
No serious critic can prove that one film is objectively the greatest Western ever made. But The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a leading candidate for a reason: it combines the scale of an epic with the stripped-down storytelling of a fable, then presents both through a visual and musical style that became instantly recognizable.
The film holds a 97% critics score and a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on the figures listed for the title when researched. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls it arguably the greatest of the spaghetti Westerns. Scores can change as sites update their databases, so those numbers should be understood as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent ranking. [c004]
The American Film Institute describes the movie as one of the definitive Westerns. It was the third collaboration between Leone and Eastwood, following A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More, the three films commonly grouped as the “Man with No Name” trilogy. [c003]
That reputation has also lasted because the film influenced how later filmmakers use landscape, silence, close-ups, sound design, and delayed action. Its famous images are not merely decoration: Leone makes the viewer wait, look, and listen until a confrontation becomes almost unbearable.
The story: Confederate gold and unstable alliances
The plot follows three men searching for buried Confederate gold during the American Civil War.
- Eastwood plays a taciturn bounty hunter, often identified with the Man with No Name.
- Lee Van Cleef plays a ruthless mercenary known as Sentenza, or “Angel Eyes.”
- Eli Wallach plays Tuco, a Mexican outlaw whose energy and improvisational survival instincts make him the film’s most volatile presence.
Tuco and Eastwood’s character form an uneasy partnership, alternately exploiting and rescuing each other while pursuing information about the buried fortune. Van Cleef’s mercenary enters the hunt with a more direct appetite for money and violence. The resulting three-way conflict is less a battle between good and evil than a contest among men who cooperate when useful and betray one another when necessary. [c001][c004]
That moral instability is central to the title. “The Good,” “the Bad,” and “the Ugly” are broad genre labels, not reliable ethical classifications. Eastwood’s character may be the closest thing to a conventional hero, but he is still motivated by money. Tuco is murderous and selfish, yet funny, resourceful, and capable of affection. Angel Eyes is plainly brutal, but he operates with professional discipline rather than cartoonish rage.

Leone’s Western is therefore revisionist without becoming solemn. It questions the clean moral categories of older Westerns while still delivering outlaws, soldiers, deserts, gunfights, wanted posters, and buried treasure.
Leone’s visual grammar changed the Western
The film’s most famous stylistic feature is its control of scale. Leone moves from vast landscapes and chaotic battlefields to extreme close-ups of eyes, hands, ammunition, sweat, and gun belts. The American Film Institute specifically highlights the extreme close-ups that became definitive of the genre. [c003]
These shots change the meaning of a gunfight. A wide shot establishes the physical world; a close-up turns a glance or twitch into an event. Leone often withholds the decisive movement and stretches the seconds before violence, making anticipation as important as the shooting itself.
The film’s violence is highly stylized rather than documentary-like. It can be brutal, absurd, comic, and operatic in the same sequence. That mixture is one reason the movie feels unlike a conventional Hollywood cavalry Western. The Civil War setting supplies uniforms, military camps, prisoners, ruined landscapes, and battle scenes, but Leone uses those elements as the stage for a mythic treasure hunt.
Ennio Morricone’s score is part of the storytelling
Ennio Morricone’s music is not simply background accompaniment. The score uses whistles, vocals, orchestral passages, percussion, animal sounds, and other realistic noises as part of the film’s identity and tension-building language. AFI notes that Morricone incorporated animal sounds and realistic noises into the musical conception. [c003]
The result is a score that can identify a character, sharpen a joke, stretch a pause, or turn a landscape into a psychological space. The instantly recognizable main theme has become inseparable from the idea of the spaghetti Western itself.
Viewers who become interested in the music can look for Ennio Morricone’s expanded physical soundtrack; availability and edition details should be checked before purchase.
The cemetery showdown remains the film’s great set piece
The climax takes place in a massive cemetery, where the three principals face one another in a circular, three-way standoff over the hidden gold. Rather than rushing to the exchange of gunfire, Leone builds the sequence through editing, glances, movement, silence, and Morricone’s escalating score.

AFI Fest describes the cemetery finale as one of cinema’s great scenes. [c005] Its power comes partly from the unusual geometry: this is not a straightforward duel between a hero and a villain. Each man must watch two opponents, and every shift in attention could be fatal.

The sequence is also a concise summary of the film’s method. A simple premise—three people want the same money—becomes monumental through timing, composition, performance, and sound.
How historically accurate is the Civil War setting?
The film uses the American Civil War as an atmospheric and thematic framework, not as a strict historical reconstruction. Leone researched the period through the Library of Congress and drew inspiration from Civil War photographer Mathew Brady, but the movie also contains clear historical inaccuracies. The AFI notes, for example, that the film uses dynamite before its historical invention date. [c003]
It is more accurate to say that the war shapes the film’s world than to call the film historically faithful. Battlefields, prisoner-of-war camps, uniforms, military bureaucracy, and wartime confusion create the conditions for the treasure hunt. The movie’s primary purpose, however, is operatic genre storytelling.

The commonly listed theatrical version runs 161 minutes, or approximately 2 hours and 41 minutes. AFI Fest lists a 161-minute runtime, while Rotten Tomatoes gives the equivalent figure of 2 hours and 41 minutes. [c004][c005] Streaming services and home-video releases can display different runtimes because of alternate cuts, credits, restorations, or regional versions.
If Tubi shows a slightly different runtime, that does not necessarily mean you have found a different film. Check the service’s listing and content description, particularly if you are comparing it with a disc edition.
Free stream or physical copy?
The Tubi listing is the easiest option for a casual viewing, but ad-supported availability can rotate. If you want a permanent copy, Kino Lorber’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 4K UHD Blu-ray page lists both a 4K UHD edition and a Blu-ray edition. That is a more dependable choice for collectors, though current price, stock, disc specifications, and the exact included cut should be confirmed at the time of purchase. [c007]
For soundtrack collectors, Quartet Records lists an expanded three-CD edition made in collaboration with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Capitol Records, and Universal Music Enterprises. Apple Music also lists a remastered extended version of Morricone’s soundtrack. [c006][c008] This is a specialist purchase rather than a necessary companion to the free stream.

That depends on what you dislike. The film is a poor match for anyone looking for a short, historically precise, morally conventional Western. It is a strong match for viewers interested in visual storytelling, antiheroes, film music, slow-burn suspense, or the roots of modern action cinema.

The movie is deliberately long and often patient. Its middle sections move through wandering encounters, military chaos, imprisonment, deception, and repeated reversals before the final payoff. The length gives the characters room to become comic, cruel, exhausted, and unexpectedly human—but it also means the film demands attention rather than functioning as background viewing.
For a first viewing, use the largest screen and best speakers available if possible. The landscapes, close-ups, and sound design are not separate attractions; they are the mechanism by which the suspense works.

Is The Good, the Bad and the Ugly really the greatest Western ever made?

The Bottom Line
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is currently an excellent free-with-ads viewing opportunity for U.S. audiences who can access Tubi. Its claim to greatness rests on more than nostalgia: Leone’s extreme close-ups and suspenseful editing, Eastwood’s trio of contrasting performances, Morricone’s defining score, and the unforgettable cemetery showdown helped establish a visual language that still shapes Westerns and action films.
Check Tubi before planning your viewing, and remember that streaming rights can change. If the film becomes a keeper, the listed Kino Lorber 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions offer a more permanent alternative.
