Verdict: The Google TV Streamer is an excellent new Google TV box and a selective upgrade from Chromecast with Google TV. Its faster menus, 32GB of advertised storage, Gigabit Ethernet, and redesigned remote solve real hardware shortcomings. The Google TV software, picture quality, and content discovery are much less transformed, so owners of a responsive Chromecast should wait for a sale or keep what they have.
What the Google TV Streamer actually is
The Google TV Streamer is a standalone 4K set-top box and the successor to Chromecast with Google TV. It connects to any television or projector with HDMI, runs Android TV OS with the Google TV interface, supports casting, and doubles as a Google Home smart-home hub. Unlike the old Chromecast dongle, it sits on a shelf and includes built-in Gigabit Ethernet, Matter support, and a Thread border router.
Google recommends a 4K display for the full experience, although it can also feed a compatible lower-resolution screen. The product page is at Google Store.
The one genuinely clever trick: Find My Remote
The redesigned remote has a built-in speaker. Press the locator button on the back of the Streamer, say “Hey Google, find my remote,” or use the Google Home app, and the remote plays a locating sound. It is a small feature, but a useful one if remotes regularly disappear under cushions or in another room.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
The remote is larger than Chromecast’s handset and adds a customizable Star button. Google says that button can launch an app, switch inputs, or open the smart-home panel. That flexibility comes with a trade-off: it replaces the former dedicated input-select control, which may be less convenient if the handset is also your television remote. HDMI-CEC and the television’s own remote settings still determine how input switching behaves.
Find My Remote is a convenience, not a reason by itself to replace a working streamer. Google documents the feature on its product page.
Is it faster than Chromecast with Google TV?
Yes, but “faster” should mean less waiting rather than premium-class performance. The Streamer feels more responsive when opening apps, scrolling menus, changing screens, switching profiles, and returning to Keep watching. The difference is especially obvious when replacing a sluggish television’s built-in Google TV interface or managing a large app library.

Once a film or episode is playing, the upgrade is much harder to see. The box does not automatically provide better picture quality, a higher frame rate, or a different streaming catalog. In its October 14, 2024 review, MobileSyrup described smoother operation but an experience that remained broadly similar to Chromecast with Google TV and not exceptionally fast by high-end streaming-box standards: review details.

There is no defensible benchmark in the available testing, so claims of a specific percentage improvement or “fastest Google TV device” would be misleading.

Full specifications are listed by Google at the official specifications page. Google does not include an HDMI cable, so add the cost of a certified HDMI 2.1 cable if you do not already have a suitable one. The device’s 4K/60 ceiling means that cable does not turn it into a 120Hz gaming system.

Google TV software: familiar strengths and familiar frustrations
The home screen combines recommendations, Keep watching, app rows, voice search, profiles, casting from Android devices and Google services, Google Photos, and ambient display options. You can also view compatible smart-home controls and camera feeds.
The interface remains advertising-supported and recommendations do not represent every service equally. MobileSyrup reported inconsistent discovery, including limited representation for Netflix and Plex in the home screen. Treat that as a reviewer’s testing observation rather than a guarantee that an app is unavailable; catalog integration can vary by country, account, profile, and software version.
Recommended Free Tools
Google now promotes Gemini for TV on the Streamer. That is a later software development, not part of the original 2024 review. Availability depends on country, account, rollout, and current software; check the current Google product page before treating it as universal.

Picture, sound, and network performance
The Streamer can pass 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos, and other listed Dolby formats. It cannot make SDR content HDR or improve a display that already receives the same formats from Chromecast with Google TV. The television or projector, sound system, HDMI chain, streaming service, title, and audio settings all have to support the desired result.
Ethernet is valuable in apartments with crowded wireless channels, rooms far from the router, projector installations, and households streaming high-bitrate local files. It improves network stability, not the speed of menu animations, and requires a cable to a router or network switch. Strong, reliable Wi-Fi households may notice little benefit.
Storage and app-heavy households
Google’s comparison lists Chromecast with Google TV at 8GB of storage and 2GB of memory, versus 32GB and 4GB for the Streamer: Google’s comparison. The extra capacity means fewer uninstall-and-reinstall chores for households with many streaming services, Plex tools, games, or smart-home apps. It does not mean all 32GB is available to you, and poorly optimized apps can still be slow.

- Pair Bluetooth headphones or earbuds if required.
- Review display, HDR, audio, HDMI-CEC, and frame-rate-matching settings; labels can change with Google TV updates.
- Assign the remote’s Star button and test Find My Remote.
- Connect Ethernet to your router or switch if using wired networking.
- Phone setup fails: restart the Streamer and complete setup manually with the remote.
- No picture: check power, HDMI input, cable, and display compatibility.
- Motion looks wrong: enable content frame-rate matching where available.
- Remote will not control the television: rerun remote setup and check HDMI-CEC or infrared configuration.

Special cases
Projectors
A slow projector interface is a good reason to add the Streamer, but input switching can become awkward when a receiver or soundbar is involved. Confirm that the projector supports the HDR formats you want, check HDMI-CEC for unwanted input changes, and decide whether the Streamer should connect directly to the projector or through the audio device. MobileSyrup found that a modestly faster interface did not always outweigh extra input-navigation steps.
Plex and local media
More memory does not guarantee a better Plex client. MobileSyrup found Plex functional but less polished than on Apple TV. Before buying, check whether you need high-bitrate local playback, subtitles, Dolby Vision profile compatibility, lossless-audio passthrough, or Ethernet; those requirements can matter more than menu speed.
Bluetooth headphones
Quick Pair can make compatible Android earbuds easy to connect, although latency, volume control, codecs, and the number of simultaneous connections vary by accessory and app. The 2024 review reported straightforward pairing for supported earbuds.
Smart-home households
Matter and Thread make the Streamer a useful Google Home component, but a Thread border router is not universal compatibility. The devices must support the relevant Matter categories and Google Home integration.

- Buy it: if your television is slow, you need Google TV without replacing the screen, want wired Ethernet, install many apps, use Google Home/Matter/Thread, or frequently lose remotes.
- Upgrade selectively: Chromecast with Google TV owners should do so when lag, storage limits, or missing Ethernet are real problems.
- Keep your current device: if it is responsive and has enough storage, because picture quality and the basic Google TV experience change little.
- Look elsewhere: Apple-focused households may prefer Apple TV 4K (Apple), readers who prefer Roku’s navigation can consider Roku Ultra (Roku), and Alexa households can review current Fire TV options (Amazon). None is automatically superior; ecosystem, interface, app support, advertising, and price decide the fit.
- Gamers: the 4K/60 output ceiling makes this a streaming and smart-home box, not a high-end gaming device.
Final verdict
At Google’s $99.99 U.S. list price, the Google TV Streamer fixes Chromecast with Google TV’s most tangible hardware weaknesses: lag, limited storage, and the absence of integrated Ethernet. The remote finder is the memorable extra, while Matter and Thread add value for Google Home users. It does not deliver a radical software redesign, cleaner recommendations, or a major picture-quality jump. Buy it for responsiveness, capacity, wired networking, or smart-home integration; otherwise, wait for a sale or keep a satisfactory Chromecast.
