Meanwhile, Bertha wins a major social battle, Gladys reveals she is pregnant, Peggy accepts William’s proposal, and Marian and Larry cautiously make peace. The finale gives its characters public victories and romantic openings, but leaves the Russell marriage—and the identity of George’s attacker—unresolved.
Does George survive the shooting?
The operation at the Russell home
Yes. George is badly wounded in an ambush, and the household brings Dr. William Kirkland to the Russell mansion when the regular physician is unavailable. William operates on George in the dining room, with Marian helping to control the bleeding, and removes the bullet. George survives the operation.
Why George leaves Bertha
Survival does not bring the Russells back to their old footing. At Bertha’s ball, George tells Larry that a couple’s disagreements should be weighed against what brings them together. The next morning, however, he tells Bertha that he attended the ball to protect the business. He is returning to New York and will not come home to 61st Street until he knows what he wants.
The shooting has forced George to reconsider his choices. Series creator Julian Fellowes explained the turn to TheWrap in 2025: “We felt that George would look at his life after this attempt on it and not be pleased by everything he saw.” His departure is a marital separation cliffhanger, not a confirmed divorce or permanent breakup.

Who shot George?
The finale does not identify the shooter. George believes former associate Richard Clay is the leading suspect, but that remains an suspicion rather than a solved case.
Are Bertha and George still together?
They are still married, but they end the finale apart. Bertha has just staged the Newport ball she fought to hold, and George’s brief appearance there might look like reconciliation. His decision the following morning makes clear that the gesture was about business, not a return to their shared home.
Their split grows out of a conflict over how Bertha has used family relationships to secure social standing. She argues that arranging Gladys’s marriage gave their daughter power in a world where wealthy women had few choices. George draws a line between ruthlessness in business and ruthlessness toward people he loves. His refusal to come home leaves Bertha facing the personal cost of the strategy that helped her win socially.

What does Bertha win at the Newport ball?
Bertha uses the ball to end the exclusion of divorced women from society. Aurora Fane and Charlotte Astor Drayton return to the social scene, and Mrs. Astor is forced to accept the new order. The event also serves the Russell railroad deal: after George is shot, the family’s appearance of business-as-usual matters to their interests.
It is a genuine social victory, but the finale places it beside Bertha’s private crisis. Her influence has grown even as her husband withdraws, making the ball less a simple triumph than a measure of what she may have sacrificed to achieve it.
Is Gladys pregnant?
Yes. After George announces that he is leaving, Gladys tells Bertha she is expecting a child with the Duke of Buckingham. The news confirms that Gladys and Hector have built a loving partnership. It also gives Bertha the future she sought through the marriage alliance just as she faces the possibility of losing George’s partnership.

Do Peggy and William get engaged?
Yes. Elizabeth Kirkland’s disclosure of Peggy’s adoption history and past scandal briefly drives Peggy and William apart. Dorothy Scott stands up for her daughter, while Frederick Kirkland tells William to decide what kind of man he wants to be. At the ball, William asks Peggy’s father for permission and proposes publicly. Peggy accepts, making their engagement the season’s clearest romantic resolution.
What happens to Marian and Larry?
Marian and Larry reconcile, cautiously. Marian had broken off their engagement after hearing Larry had visited a “house of ill repute,” though viewers knew the encounter was innocent. Jack backs up Larry’s account, and Marian recognizes that fear of being abandoned led her to assume the worst.

At the ball, they apologize and dance together. The scene offers hope, but it does not show them resolving every problem or formally restoring their engagement. Their next step is to rebuild trust through conversation rather than treat one dance as a complete repair.

Where do the other characters end the season?
Agnes and Ada
Ada has become the effective head of the household. Agnes is offered the vice-presidency of the New York Heritage Society and accepts Ada’s authority at the dinner table, marking a meaningful shift in their household dynamic.
Jack and Bridget
After selling his clock patent, Jack buys a house and hires staff. Glamour reported the patent sale at $600,000 in 2025. His return to the Forte–Van Rhijn home and Bridget’s visit with a meal suggest a gentle romance, though the finale does not make their relationship explicit.
Oscar and Turner
After John Adams’s death, Oscar considers a practical marriage with the recently widowed Mrs. Winterton, also known as Turner. The finale leaves the possibility at the exploratory stage rather than presenting it as an engagement.
What is the finale saying?
The episode sets public success against private cost. Bertha’s campaign to reshape society succeeds through the same strategic force that has strained her marriage. Peggy’s future changes when William takes responsibility for his own choice instead of accepting inherited prejudice. Marian and Larry’s tentative reunion, by contrast, depends on acknowledging hurt and beginning to rebuild trust.
That contrast gives the ending its central irony: Bertha has secured the ball, the social change she wanted, and the marriage alliance for Gladys, but George has left her. The finale does not resolve whether they will reunite, just as it leaves George’s attacker unidentified.
