Knives Out 3 plot: what is the mystery?
Benoit Blanc joins an earnest young priest to investigate a seemingly impossible crime at a small-town church. The church has a dark history, and the case takes the series into questions about religious belief, deception, moral certainty and grace.
This is a spoiler-light overview: the central crime and its solution are best experienced without advance details. The setting gives the film a more gothic and explicitly spiritual identity than the previous mysteries.

How it compares with the first two films
Setting and atmosphere
The original Knives Out used an isolated mansion and a wealthy family feud as its pressure cooker. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery moved the action to a private island. Wake Up Dead Man shifts to a church and a small-town community, using gothic surroundings and a darker mood.
Themes
Earlier entries examined class, privilege, ambition and public image through their murder puzzles. The third film places faith, truth, lies and grace at the center of its mystery, with religion shaping both the setting and the questions Blanc must pursue.

Blanc’s role
Craig remains the lead as Blanc, but the case again depends on an ensemble whose relationships and conflicting accounts drive the investigation. Netflix describes this installment as the “third and darkest chapter” of Johnson’s murder-mystery series, while the Associated Press has identified religion as a central element.
How dark is it?
Its church setting, gothic atmosphere and emphasis on spiritual doubt make it darker in tone than the earlier films. It is still rated PG-13, and the rating does not indicate an adults-only horror film; expect a heightened murder mystery with more ominous religious and macabre imagery.

Netflix lists a runtime of 2 hours 26 minutes and a PG-13 rating. That length gives the ensemble mystery room for multiple suspects, competing explanations and a sustained investigation, while the rating signals that the film remains within mainstream theatrical and streaming standards rather than extreme horror.
The franchise’s business context
The first Knives Out reportedly grossed $312 million worldwide, according to the Associated Press in 2025. AP also reported that Netflix acquired the two sequels as a package valued at $400 million. Those figures describe the first film’s reported worldwide gross and the reported sequel deal, respectively; they are not a budget or a confirmed profit figure for Wake Up Dead Man.
