Spoilers for “Ex-Communicated,” Season 3, Episode 7. Larry Russell returns home with a business victory and finds his engagement to Marian over; Oscar nearly reveals the truth about his relationship with John Adams; and Ward McAllister’s book blows up his place in society. Then an armed intruder shoots Jones and fires at George, leaving George’s fate unresolved when the episode ends.

What happens in “Ex-Communicated”?

“Ex-Communicated,” the seventh episode of The Gilded Age Season 3, aired August 3, 2025. The episode’s central stories turn on private truths becoming public—or remaining unsaid—with consequences for love, grief and social standing. Its final moments add a sudden, unresolved threat to the Russell household.

Rotten Tomatoes lists Sonja Warfield as the screenwriter and Gareth Neame and Salli Richardson-Whitfield as directors.

Why does Marian break off her engagement to Larry?

Larry comes back from the West after securing a lucrative business deal that helps his family. But instead of celebrating with Marian, he finds her letter ending their engagement. She has learned that he visited a “house of ill repute” on the night he proposed.

Larry had gone there with Jack for business-related reasons, but he did not explain that clearly to Marian at the time. Once Jack tells her what happened, Marian begins to soften. The episode does not show the couple fully reconciled, so their future remains uncertain.

Harry Richardson, who plays Larry, described the shock of the breakup to TheWrap: “The most important thing in his life at this stage is this engagement, and he just had it ripped away with no explanation. It’s super painful for him.” Larry’s business success cannot repair the damage caused by what Marian believes—and what he failed to tell her.

Does Agnes know the truth about John Adams?

Oscar is grieving John Adams, his lover, who has died and left him a house and money. In a moment of grief, Oscar nearly tells Agnes and Ada what John meant to him. They seem to understand more than they say, but neither gives him an uncomplicated opening to speak openly.

Creator Julian Fellowes told TVLine that Agnes would behave as though a relationship like Oscar’s “could not be,” while Ada is more aware and gentler. Fellowes described the choice facing men in Oscar’s position: “They could live in the normal world along with everyone else, but essentially live a lie, or they could expose their lie and be an outsider for the rest of their lives. That was the choice they were offered, which was very hard.”

So Agnes appears to grasp what Oscar is mourning, but her response is constrained by denial and silence. The scene makes clear that understanding is not the same as offering him safety to name his relationship.

Why does Ward McAllister’s book cause a scandal?

Mrs. Astor and other society women freeze Ward McAllister out after his book reveals details about upper-class customs and spending. The rupture is dramatized for the series, but the book itself is real: Society as I Have Found It was published by the real McAllister in 1890. The official Gilded Age podcast summary says its disclosures invited ridicule and harmed his relationships.

The episode uses the book as more than gossip: it turns McAllister’s account of elite life into a test of who gets to define—and police—society’s boundaries. The historical publication and its social fallout are the context; the episode’s particular reactions belong to the show’s story.

What happens to Peggy and Miss Andre?

Peggy’s past adoption becomes a present issue when Mrs. Kirkland travels to New York to tell her son, Dr. Kirkland. He decides to speak with Peggy before deciding what their relationship should become. The episode leaves that conversation and its consequences ahead.

The Russells expose a mole

At the Russell household, the staff sets a trap that reveals Miss Andre as a mole. It is a consequential parallel development: the household’s private information has been vulnerable, and the reveal changes the stakes around the Russells’ efforts to manage the crisis.

Are Gladys and the Duke finding their footing?

Gladys and the Duke appear to be settling into a more workable arrangement. The Duke proposes that Lady Sarah find another home, a sign that the couple may be starting to shape their life together. The episode presents progress, not a final resolution of every tension in their relationship.

Is George Russell dead at the end of the episode?

The episode does not establish that George is dead. In the final sequence, an armed man arrives disguised as a courier, shoots Jones, turns toward George and fires. The story cuts off before showing whether George survives. The cliffhanger is the episode’s endpoint, not an answer about what happens next.

TVLine’s recap covers the shooting and the episode’s other developments. Keeping the outcome open matters: “Ex-Communicated” ends with a shot fired, not a confirmed death.
