The storyline looks beyond romance and social rivalry to explore Black wealth, family histories shaped by different experiences of freedom, colorism, and the ways Black elites moved through high society.
What the cast and creators say Season 3 is exploring
In a HBO feature published August 12, 2025, cast members discuss several strands of the season’s Black social world: race in medicine, Black leisure and sporting life, and how Black elites navigated high society. HBO’s description notes that they hosted their own balls and learned the same dances as the white upper class. These are topics the feature says the cast discusses, not a claim that every Black family experienced society in the same way.
In a July 6, 2025 interview with TheWrap, series co-writer Sonja Warfield described the storyline as an opportunity to explore Black elites of the era alongside the divide between free Black people and people who had been emancipated more recently. Denée Benton, who plays Peggy, said, “Exploring the nuances of the Black communities in that time, Black wealth and the white supremacy that still found its way into those dynamics, is really interesting meat to get into.”
How Peggy encounters the Kirkland family
Peggy, played by Benton, meets Dr. William Kirkland, portrayed by Jordan Donica, and enters the orbit of his Newport family. The household is led by Elizabeth Kirkland (Phylicia Rashad) and pastor Frederick Kirkland (Brian Stokes Mitchell). Peggy’s parents, Arthur and Dorothy Scott, are played by John Douglas Thompson and Audra McDonald.

The family contrast described in TheWrap’s interview is not simply a matter of old money versus new money. The Kirklands are presented as a family whose free status and Rhode Island roots reach back generations. TheWrap reports that they had been free and living in Rhode Island for five generations. Arthur Scott’s story differs: he began a Brooklyn pharmacy after becoming free as a young man. The show places those different family histories beside one another, suggesting how a community’s status and experience could be shaped by both time and circumstance.
Why colorism matters to the family conflict
The season also brings colorism into the family’s dynamics. TheWrap describes Elizabeth’s concern that her grandchildren might darken from playing outside, and identifies colorism as a theme Warfield discussed. That detail connects private family expectations to the broader social hierarchies the characters navigate; it is part of this fictional family’s story, not evidence that all Black families of the period shared the same attitudes.
