June and Moira get out of Jezebel’s in Commander Lawrence’s car, but June’s effort to recover Mayday’s materials draws her into a new set of risks in New Bethlehem. In “Surprise,” Nick helps her retrieve the documents and asks her to leave with him—just before Wharton reveals that Nick exposed Mayday’s planned attack.
Episode details
“Surprise” is season 6, episode 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale. Hulu lists it as written by Aly Monroe, directed by Natalia Leite, and premiered April 29, 2025. The official logline is brief: “June hides in an unexpected place.” Hulu’s season-six press loglines identify the episode and its credits. Hulu’s series listing also includes an “Inside the Episode 606: ‘Surprise’” feature.
June and Moira escape Jezebel’s, but the safe remains a priority
June and Moira are hidden in the trunk of Commander Lawrence’s car as he drives them away from Jezebel’s. Once they are out, Lawrence tells them that other commanders oppose his New Bethlehem plans and want him dead. June reveals that Mayday intends to attack the commanders at Jezebel’s. Their shared opposition gives her and Lawrence a tactical reason to cooperate, though the arrangement is uneasy and short-term.
June’s immediate focus is still the letters and map kept in Jezebel’s safe. The site is under lockdown, so she cannot simply go back in. Nick enters and retrieves the materials, then brings them to June. His help is real, but it does not settle where his loyalties lie.

Nick’s offer collides with the Mayday betrayal
Before June and Moira can fully get clear, June ends up in New Bethlehem and turns to Serena for somewhere to stay. Later, Nick proposes that he and June run away together. When Wharton arrives, Serena hides the pair in a closet.
Wharton tells Serena that Jezebel’s has been shut down after he learned of Mayday’s planned attack. He credits Nick with giving him that information. June hears the disclosure beside Nick: the man who has just helped recover the safe’s contents has also exposed the operation. The timing turns Nick’s offer into an immediate personal and political crisis for June.

Janine, Lydia and the proposed fertility center
At Jezebel’s, Lydia visits Janine and discusses a proposed New Bethlehem fertility center for former handmaids. Janine rejects Lydia’s hopeful picture of the project and makes reconciliation conditional: Lydia must help her find her daughter, Charlotte. Her demand shifts the conversation away from institutional plans and toward the family separation that remains unresolved.
Rita chooses her family’s safety
In New Bethlehem, June sees Rita and suggests she might help Mayday. Rita’s priority is keeping her family safe, and June understands why she will not take on that risk. The exchange makes clear that New Bethlehem is not simply a refuge or a reform project: in this episode it is also a place where people still face difficult bargains and unequal exposure to danger.
