In a first look reported by Gizmodo on March 20, 2024, director Tim Burton previewed Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to his 1988 film. Michael Keaton returns as Beetlejuice alongside Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, while Jenna Ortega joins the Deetz family as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid. The preview also outlined a family tragedy that brings Lydia back to the ghost with the most.
Who returns, and who is new?
Gizmodo’s March 20, 2024 report names the returning cast as Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. Jenna Ortega plays Astrid, Lydia’s daughter. Justin Theroux is also named as Rory, and Willem Dafoe joins the cast as an afterlife character. Gizmodo’s first-look report attributes its account of the film and cast to Burton’s preview for Entertainment Weekly.

What is the sequel about?
The story begins with an unexpected death in the Deetz family. The first-look report says Lydia brings Beetlejuice back. A synopsis from Warner Bros. Pictures reproduced by Nerdist adds the route to that return: the Deetzes come back to Winter River, where Astrid discovers the town model in the attic. The portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened, setting trouble in motion in both realms.
The premise returns the story to the Deetz family while giving the next generation a central role. Astrid’s discovery links her to the supernatural world that has haunted Lydia, and the familiar rule remains: saying Beetlejuice’s name three times brings the demon back. What did Burton say about Keaton and Lydia?
Gizmodo reported Burton’s comments about Keaton’s return, quoting the director: “He just got back into it.” Burton also said Keaton “Unless it felt right, he had no burning desire to do it.” The comments frame the return as something Keaton agreed to when the project felt right, rather than a role he was eager to revisit regardless.
Burton also described his connection to Lydia’s character across the years: “I so identified with the Lydia character, but then you get to all these years later, and you take your own journey, going from cool teenager to lame adult, back and forth again.” The sequel’s family focus gives that passage of time a place in the story, with Lydia now a mother to a rebellious teenager.

Was the sequel made with practical effects instead of CGI?
Burton’s reported aim was a “back-to-basics, handmade quality,” and Gizmodo says he spoke of a stop-motion approach. That describes his creative intention; it does not establish that the film contains no CGI or provide a shot-by-shot inventory of its effects techniques. Burton said the experience “reenergized why I love making movies,” according to the same report.

Nerdist reported in March 2024 that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was scheduled to open in theaters on September 6, 2024. That was the release date given in contemporaneous coverage, not an upcoming date.
