This editorial shortlist weighs how well each film stands alone, how it treats its source, its genre craft, critic and audience reception, and—where useful—its theatrical reach. Those are separate measures, not ingredients in a single objective score.
Included here are feature films adapting an identifiable game or game franchise. Films merely set inside a fictional game world, such as Ready Player One, Free Guy, and Jumanji, do not qualify under that rule. The ranking is an editorial guide, not a universal verdict.
Best video game movie adaptations, ranked
- Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) — The strongest all-round pick for a distinctive game world, an accessible mystery, and family viewing.
- Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) — A lively, approachable adventure that understands its central character and has especially strong audience reception.
- Werewolves Within (2021) — A smart example of turning a game’s social premise into a film with its own genre identity.
- Tomb Raider (2018) — A reboot-inspired action story worth considering for its take on Lara Croft, though its reception is mixed.
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) — A colorful, recognizable animated adaptation that audiences embraced more warmly than critics did.
- Mortal Kombat (2021) — A targeted choice for viewers who want franchise characters, fight scenes, and a more violent fantasy.
GamesRadar+’s authored ranking places Pokémon Detective Pikachu second and calls it the best video-game movie in its own judgment; the selection above is an independent editorial ordering based on the criteria stated here. Its list and discussion are available at GamesRadar+.
Why these adaptations stand out
1. Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019): a world built for a mystery
The film makes Pokémon more than a parade of familiar creatures: its central mystery follows Tim Goodman and Pikachu through a live-action world shaped by the games’ characters and setting. That makes it an inviting starting point even for viewers who have not played the games, while franchise fans have plenty to recognize. GamesRadar+ highlights its affection for the Pokémon world.
#1 Best Overall
- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
Reception is positive but not unanimous. Rotten Tomatoes’ video-game-movies guide displayed a 68% Tomatometer and 79% Popcornmeter for the film when accessed in 2026. Its critics’ consensus says the unusual premise may not be fully developed, while suggesting the film should appeal to franchise fans. Scores can change; see the Rotten Tomatoes guide for its displayed figures and consensus.
2. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020): a character-led family adventure
Sonic’s speed and attitude translate into an accessible adventure, and GamesRadar+ praises the film’s grasp of the character and tone. The production revised Sonic’s initial character design after fan reaction, an unusually visible example of a game audience influencing an adaptation before release. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes it as “Fittingly fleet and frequently fun, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy — and a fine excuse for Jim Carrey to tap into the manic energy that launched his career.”

Rotten Tomatoes’ guide showed a 64% Tomatometer and 89% Popcornmeter in its 2026 snapshot. That gap makes the film a better recommendation for viewers seeking an easygoing crowd-pleaser than for those looking for the strongest critic reception. The scores are a snapshot and may change.
3. Werewolves Within (2021): adapt the mechanic, not every detail
Loosely based on Ubisoft’s 2016 VR game, Werewolves Within takes the source’s social-deduction setup—the suspicion and shifting alliances of a group trying to identify a threat—and builds a distinct genre film around it. Its value as an adaptation lies less in literal recreation than in carrying a game’s central social experience into a new form. GamesRadar+ ranks it fourth on its list.
Rank #3

4. Tomb Raider (2018): a reboot-inspired take on Lara Croft
GamesRadar+ frames this film as a homage to the 2013 game reboot, while noting that it riffs on the games rather than directly adapting them. It offers a version of Lara Croft and her origin for the screen, but is not a consensus favorite: Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 guide snapshot showed a 52% Tomatometer and 55% Popcornmeter, with criticism directed at the origin story. It is a useful pick for viewers interested in adaptation choices and Lara’s portrayal, rather than a safe recommendation for universally acclaimed storytelling.
5. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023): recognizable world, divided response
The animated film leans into the visual language and characters of the games, making it a natural choice for family viewing and fans who want to see Mario’s world on screen. GamesRadar+ calls it a well-executed, family-suitable adaptation. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 58% Tomatometer and 93% Popcornmeter in its 2026 guide snapshot: a marked critic-audience split that signals broad audience enjoyment without suggesting critics agreed to the same degree.

- In THE IMITATION GAME, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII. Turing went on to assist with the development of computers at the University of Manchester after the war, but was prosecuted by the UK government in 1952 for homosexual a
6. Mortal Kombat (2021): for combat and franchise characters
This is the shortlist’s most genre-specific recommendation. GamesRadar+ emphasizes the fight scenes and appeal to fans; Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 guide showed a 55% Tomatometer and 71% Popcornmeter. Choose it for combat, familiar characters, and violent fantasy rather than as a general-purpose introduction to video game films. The franchise began with a game first produced in 1992, according to the Entertainment Software Association’s 2020 economic impact report.
Which video game movie should you watch?
| If you want… | Try… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Family-friendly viewing and a game world to explore | Pokémon Detective Pikachu | A self-contained mystery with a setting and creatures closely associated with the franchise. |
| A fast, accessible crowd-pleaser | Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) | Its audience score in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 snapshot substantially exceeded its critic score. |
| Animation and recognizable game imagery | The Super Mario Bros. Movie | It foregrounds the Mario world and had a pronounced critic-audience score split in the 2026 snapshot. |
| A game premise reworked for another genre | Werewolves Within | It builds a film around social deduction rather than attempting a scene-for-scene translation. |
| Lara Croft and a reboot-inspired origin | Tomb Raider (2018) | It riffs on the 2013 reboot, though reception was mixed in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 snapshot. |
| Fight scenes and a more violent fantasy | Mortal Kombat (2021) | Its emphasis on combat and franchise characters suits viewers seeking that specific style. |
How box office and ratings change the picture
Reception, adaptation quality, and commercial reach answer different questions. Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and Popcornmeter represent critic and audience response, respectively; neither is a direct measure of faithfulness to the games. A high audience score can make a film a strong crowd-pleasing choice without settling whether critics, longtime players, or viewers unfamiliar with the franchise will rate it equally highly.

Box Office Mojo’s video-game-adaptation genre table displayed lifetime domestic theatrical grosses of $424,087,780 for A Minecraft Movie, $148,974,665 for Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), and $144,105,346 for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu when accessed in 2026. These are domestic theatrical figures from that table, not worldwide totals or measures of artistic quality; the figures are time-sensitive. The table is available at Box Office Mojo.
Historical worldwide figures should not be mixed into that domestic comparison. The Entertainment Software Association’s 2020 report gave Pokémon Detective Pikachu a historical worldwide total of $433 million and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) $275 million. Those figures differ in geography, date, and source methodology from Box Office Mojo’s displayed domestic lifetime grosses, so they are not directly comparable.
Other films based on games to consider
Warcraft (2016), Assassin’s Creed (2016), Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story (2023), and Mortal Kombat (1995) broaden the range of approaches: fantasy worlds, historical action, a racing story presented as a true story, and an earlier take on the fighting-game franchise. They are not ranked here, but each appears in the sources’ wider coverage of video game adaptations. For a complete list with current displayed ratings, consult Rotten Tomatoes’ video game movies guide.
What makes a video game adaptation work?
A film does not have to reproduce game events scene by scene to feel like a good adaptation. It can preserve a character, world, premise, or tone while reshaping the story for cinema. Werewolves Within carries over a social mechanic; Detective Pikachu uses a recognizable world to support a mystery; Tomb Raider takes inspiration from a game reboot rather than directly translating it. The useful question is whether those choices create a satisfying film as well as a meaningful connection to the source.
