Apple unveiled the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max at its September 7, 2022 “Far Out” event. Within hours, social media turned the launch into jokes about the Pro models’ Dynamic Island, familiar iPhone 13 hardware, upgrade fatigue, prices and the supposed decline of older phones. This is a throwback to that launch-day meme cycle, not a report about a new 2026 product.
What Apple actually launched
The 2022 lineup split into two noticeably different groups. The regular iPhone 14 and larger iPhone 14 Plus kept the familiar front notch and dual-camera design that many commenters associated with the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max introduced the pill-shaped front cutout marketed as Dynamic Island.

“The Dynamic Island is sus”
The most instantly recognizable joke focused on the Pro models’ Dynamic Island. Social-media users saw the black, pill-shaped cutout and compared it with the visor of a crewmate from Among Us, the game whose characters became a defining internet image of the early 2020s.

In Among Us slang, “sus” means “suspicious.” That made Apple’s polished description of a new interactive interface easy to recast as a familiar gaming gag: the phone appeared to have an Among Us character embedded in its screen. The comparison was visual rather than technical, which is why it worked even for people who had not followed Apple’s presentation.
The meme was associated with a post by @malditoleandro, referenced by contemporaneous coverage from Gizmochina. If the original post or image is unavailable, a durable text caption is: “iPhone 14 Pro Dynamic Island compared with an Among Us crewmate.”
“My old iPhone got slow overnight”
Another widely shared joke showed an older iPhone apparently stuttering or struggling immediately after the new model was announced. The referenced post used a stuttering dance clip to portray an iPhone X as if it had suddenly lost performance.

The gag plays on upgrade-cycle anxiety: whenever a new phone appears, some owners feel that their current device has become obsolete. It should not be read as evidence that Apple deliberately slowed an iPhone X because the iPhone 14 launched. Actual performance can be affected by software updates, battery health and device age, while the meme itself is satire about perceived obsolescence.
The post was attributed in launch coverage to @insanetweet. Old engagement totals are omitted here because likes and views are time-sensitive snapshots, and current availability of the post may differ.
“I’ll sell a lung for the Pro Max”
The iPhone 14 Pro Max became a fresh target for the long-running smartphone joke about selling a kidney or lung to afford the latest model. One referenced meme depicted someone offering a lung for the device. It is exaggerated internet humor, not a literal affordability calculation.

Contemporaneous reports also discussed higher launch prices in some markets outside the United States. That comparison cannot be reduced to a universal “10%–30% increase”: the result depends on country, currency-conversion date, taxes, storage capacity and the equivalent iPhone 13 configuration. The original coverage explicitly excluded the U.S. from that comparison.

“iPhone 13 owners buying the iPhone 14”
The standard iPhone 14 supplied the lineup’s strongest upgrade-fatigue joke. Memes portrayed an iPhone 13 owner buying a phone that appeared almost unchanged, pointing to the A15 Bionic chip, familiar notch and dual-camera arrangement.

That was the meme’s premise, not a complete technical assessment. The regular iPhone 14 was not literally identical to the iPhone 13, but its exterior and several headline specifications made the “why upgrade?” reaction easy to understand. The contrast became sharper because the Pro models had the visibly new Dynamic Island.
The comparison meme was associated with @wallstmemes. Its joke remains legible when described as: “An iPhone 13 owner upgrades to the iPhone 14 despite the familiar design and core chip.”

These posts show the range of online commentary, not a scientific measure of what all iPhone owners or Android users believed. They also explain why the memes spread: each one attached a familiar internet template to a specific launch decision.
Why the memes landed
The Dynamic Island supplied a simple visual punchline; the regular iPhone 14 supplied a recognizable “same phone again” argument; the Pro Max supplied an exaggerated price reaction; and the slowdown meme turned annual upgrade pressure into a character. Together, they made the launch understandable even to people who had not watched Apple’s event.
