The joke began with an unsettling coincidence: Pope Francis met U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the Vatican on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, and died the next day. Social media turned that timing into the false, tongue-in-cheek claim that Vance had “killed” the Pope. The memes are political mockery, not evidence of a connection to Francis’s death.
Why the “JD Vance killed the Pope” meme spread
Francis died on April 21, 2025, one day after his brief meeting with Vance. That sequence supplied the punchline: posts treated the close timing as if it implied a cause. It does not. Reporting described the supposed connection as false and the posts as tongue-in-cheek. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that “JD Vance kill pope” and “JD Vance killed Pope Francis” became breakout Google search trends that day, but gave no search-volume figure.
Some of the best-known examples
These are documented examples, not a definitive ranking of the funniest posts. Their humor relies on exaggeration, abrupt timing, and political dislike.
- “Okay JD killed the pope.” Jack Schlossberg posted the blunt one-liner, making the meme’s premise unmistakable as a joke.
- “Good work, JD.” Ann Coulter’s short response delivered the same gag through dry, mock-congratulatory sarcasm.
- The “aura” and Antichrist jokes. Other accounts attributed Francis’s death to Vance’s “aura” or cast him as an Antichrist figure—deliberately over-the-top versions of the same political jab.
- The claw-machine image. A meme depicted Vance playing a claw machine and getting the Pope, turning the alleged “cause” into an absurd visual prize. Gizmodo documented this and other examples.
A later academic thesis described the format’s reuse in a May 2025 meme involving Pope Leo XIV and vegan products. In that version, the original joke structure was repurposed for a different punchline; the thesis also records how users framed Vance as the Antichrist or as causing Francis’s death. The thesis documents the examples.

Why the joke can look like a real allegation
Online, a sharp joke can travel without the post or conversation that made its tone clear. Someone repeating “JD Vance killed Pope Francis” may be quoting a meme, trolling, or making a literal claim; the words alone do not settle which. Nor does reporting that the phrase trended establish that searchers believed it.
Krysten Stein, an assistant professor of communication at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College, called the meme “the perfect example of how irony, misinformation and algorithmic amplification often blur together online.” Jeffrey Blevins, a professor at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Public and International Affairs, interpreted the posts as symbolic of personal dislike for Vance within a culture. Coverage also suggested that people may share a trend because they are “in on the joke”—but that cannot establish what every person who reposted it understood.

What the memes do—and do not—show
- They show how timing becomes a punchline: Francis met Vance on Easter Sunday and died the following day.
- They show political mockery: the posts turn Vance into the exaggerated villain of an online gag.
- They do not show causation: the sources establish the meeting and the meme’s timing, not a connection between Vance and Francis’s death.
- They are examples, not a complete ranking: the posts cited here are documented selections, not an objective list of the funniest memes.
