The loss before Frasier’s ninth season was the death of co-creator and producer David Angell and his wife, Lynn. They were aboard the first plane to hit the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. Their deaths came shortly before the show’s ninth season, which was released in 2001.
Who were David and Lynn Angell?
David Angell was one of Frasier’s creators and a producer on the series. His wife, Lynn, was with him on the morning of September 11, 2001, when they were aboard the first plane to strike the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. The Associated Press later identified David Angell as a creator of the sitcom, and Apple’s season listing credits him as a producer.

This was a real-life loss, not a story event in Frasier. The Angells’ deaths were not something that happened to characters on the show.
Why is the loss associated with season 9?
Frasier’s ninth season was released in 2001, placing the Angells’ deaths just before that season. The available season listing establishes the year; it does not confirm the exact premiere day, so a more precise interval should not be assumed.

The series continued with its core cast, including John Mahoney as Martin Crane. CBS reported that Mahoney appeared throughout the show’s 11-season run. That fact describes the length of his time on the series, not the scale of the Angells’ contribution or the effect of their deaths on production.
How did the cast remember the Angells?
In a 2018 Vanity Fair oral history marking the show’s 25th anniversary, David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles Crane, recalled: “It was an inconceivable loss of those two beautiful human beings.”

Peri Gilpin, who played Roz Doyle, remembered David Angell’s happiness when the show was renewed for additional episodes. Reflecting on the loss, she said: “You carry them in your heart, but it will never be resolved.” These are later recollections of grief, not statements made at the time of the attacks.

The sources establish who the Angells were, when they died, and how members of the cast later spoke about them. They do not establish a particular episode dedication or a specific change to the show’s production in response. The cast’s words convey the personal loss without requiring claims about an unverified production decision.
