The first trailer for Hellboy: The Crooked Man introduces a new lead and a more focused kind of horror: Jack Kesy’s Hellboy investigates supernatural trouble in 1950s Appalachia, far from the scale of a world-ending superhero adventure. Entertainment Weekly released the trailer in 2024, as reported by Gordon Jackson at Gizmodo.
What is the first trailer for the new Hellboy reboot like?
The trailer sets up a folk-horror investigation in the Appalachian mountains. Hellboy is paired with Bobbie Jo Song, a rookie agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD), to investigate a ghoul who harvests souls. The story takes place in the 1950s and draws its atmosphere from regional folk magic and horror.
Jackson characterized the film as a lower-stakes, lower-budget production than the earlier Guillermo del Toro and Neil Marshall films. He also described Kesy’s Hellboy as younger and less imposing than the versions played by Ron Perlman and David Harbour. Those are the article’s comparisons, not a published budget figure or a full assessment of the earlier films.
Who plays Hellboy in The Crooked Man?
- Jack Kesy plays Hellboy.
- Adeline Rudolph plays Bobbie Jo Song.

What comic is the film based on?
The film adapts Richard Corben’s original three-issue Hellboy: The Crooked Man miniseries. Dark Horse’s collected edition, Hellboy: The Crooked Man & The Return of Effie Kolb, contains the original series, issues #1–3, alongside Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Return of Effie Kolb #1–2. Dark Horse credits Mike Mignola as writer and Richard Corben and Zach Howard as artists; the catalog lists a June 26, 2024 release date and an age label of 14+.
