Start with Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman. They form a useful entry point, but they are only a selection: Sonic’s cast is large, and a character’s role can shift with the game or story.
Who are Sonic’s friends and enemies?
SEGA’s official Sonic Channel character index separates classic and modern characters, and groups its modern roster under broad headings such as companions and villains. Those labels are a helpful map, not a promise that every character appears together or has the same relationship to Sonic in every story.
For a first look, it helps to distinguish four roles: hero, ally, rival, and antagonist. Sonic is the hero; his friends help him in different ways; rivals may oppose or challenge him without being straightforward villains; and antagonists drive conflicts against him. Shadow is a particularly clear example of why context matters: SEGA places him among the modern companions, while individual stories can frame him as Sonic’s rival or an ally.

SEGA’s English Sonic Superstars character page calls Sonic “The fastest hedgehog to ever live!” and describes Tails as “Sonic’s best friend, an eager engineering genius, and pilot of Sonic’s aircraft, the ‘Tornado!’” These are character-page descriptions, not quotations attributed to a named speaker.

Rivals and other recurring foes
Shadow the Hedgehog
Shadow is a major modern character whose relationship with Sonic depends on the story. Rather than treating him as a permanent enemy, read his role in the specific game or narrative: he may be framed as a rival, an ally, or something more complicated. His placement in Sonic Channel’s broad companions grouping is one reason a simple friend-versus-foe list can mislead.
Metal Sonic
Metal Sonic is a recurring villain in SEGA’s modern character roster. He is a useful name to know when exploring Sonic’s adversaries, though an introductory guide does not need to turn his role into a full history.

The wider roster
The official modern index includes many more characters. Its companions grouping includes figures such as Rouge, Omega, Silver, Blaze, Cream and Cheese, Big, Vector, Espio, Charmy, and the Babylon Rogues—Jet, Wave, and Storm. Its villains grouping includes Orbot, Cubot, Sage, Chaos, Mephiles, Infinite, and Zavok, alongside Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic. These are broad roster groupings, not a cast list for one shared adventure.

Sonic Superstars’ official character page introduces Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman, Fang, and Trip. Its story context makes the distinction between franchise roster and individual-game cast concrete: Eggman’s plan involves the North Star Islands, and the game’s characters are selected for that adventure rather than representing everyone in Sonic’s world.

SEGA lists Sonic Superstars’ release date as October 17, 2023. Its product information documents packaged editions for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 and 5; Xbox and PC versions are listed as digital only. The game can be a way to meet some characters in a particular story, but it is not a comprehensive character reference. How to use a character list without mixing up stories
- Check the game or era. A profile may describe a character in one specific adventure rather than every continuity.
- Separate relationship from role. Someone can be a rival in one conflict and an ally in another; “friend” and “foe” are not always permanent categories.
- Use signature details to identify the cast. Tails is associated with engineering, flight, and the Tornado; Amy with her hammer; Knuckles with the Master Emerald; Eggman with his schemes.
- Treat franchise indexes as maps, not episode casts. Sonic Channel’s broad modern and classic groupings cover more characters than any one story is expected to include.
