The Fantastic Four: First Steps is Marvel Studios’ 2025 superhero film, but its most distinctive feature is not simply the team’s return to the screen. Director Matt Shakman places Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm in a fully formed alternate world: Earth-828, a retro-futuristic 1960s society where the Fantastic Four are already famous, technologically advanced and central to public life.
The film is an unusual entry point for Marvel’s first family. It does not repeat their laboratory accident as an origin story. Instead, it begins four years after the team’s exposure to cosmic rays and follows their attempt to protect their world from Galactus and his Herald, the Silver Surfer.
What is The Fantastic Four: First Steps about?
The story follows an established Fantastic Four rather than four strangers discovering their powers. Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards, the elastic-bodied scientist known as Mister Fantastic. Vanessa Kirby plays Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman. Joseph Quinn is Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays Ben Grimm, the powerful Thing.
Their opponent is Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, a cosmic entity whose arrival threatens Earth-828. Julia Garner plays the film’s Silver Surfer, identified by Marvel as Shalla-Bal. That distinction matters: this is not the traditional male Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd, from the comics. In this film’s universe, Shalla-Bal serves as Galactus’s Herald.

- Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.
The danger becomes more personal when Galactus targets Reed and Sue’s son, Franklin. That family dimension gives the film a different framework from a straightforward team-versus-monster adventure. The Fantastic Four are defending a planet, but they are also trying to protect their child while managing the responsibilities that come with being Earth-828’s most influential heroes.
Setting: Marvel’s Earth-828
The Fantastic Four: First Steps does not begin in the MCU’s familiar primary reality. Its events take place on Earth-828, an alternate universe designed as a retro-futuristic version of the 1960s. Flying cars, advanced machines and the team’s public prominence create a world that feels more like an optimistic technological future imagined from the middle of the twentieth century than a conventional period setting.
This separation from the main MCU is important. The movie is the Fantastic Four’s official introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the characters are introduced in their own universe first. Describing the film as the story of an Earth-616 Fantastic Four is therefore misleading. Earth-828 establishes the team’s original screen continuity before later crossover material connects them with the wider Marvel story.
The universe designation also carries a production reference. Earth-828 points to August 28, Jack Kirby’s birthday. Kirby’s influence is central to the visual identity of the film, and the end credits include a quotation attributed to him.

A 1960s future built from Kirby and Kubrick
Director Matt Shakman and the production team drew on two very different visual traditions. One is the bold, imaginative comic-book design associated with Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four artwork. The other is Stanley Kubrick’s controlled, monumental science-fiction aesthetic, particularly the visual language of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The result is not a generic recreation of the 1960s. The film uses the decade as a design starting point, then extends it into an alternate technological future. The Baxter Building, advanced vehicles and public-facing hero culture all belong to the same imagined world. Rather than hiding the film’s comic-book origins, the production design makes them part of the setting.

What makes this version different?
- It skips the familiar origin structure. The four heroes already have powers and have worked together for four years when the film begins.
- It uses an alternate universe as the starting point. Earth-828 gives the film its own history, technology and public relationship with the Fantastic Four.
- It reinterprets the Silver Surfer. Julia Garner plays Shalla-Bal, not the traditional Norrin Radd version of the character.
- It treats the team as a family and a public institution. The threat to Franklin places Reed and Sue’s parenthood alongside their duties as superheroes.
- It makes production design part of the storytelling. Kirby-inspired comic-book scale and Kubrick-influenced science-fiction design define the world before the central conflict is fully understood.
Common points of confusion
Is this another Fantastic Four origin movie?
No. The film begins four years after the team gains its powers, so the cosmic-ray accident is part of their past rather than the main narrative.
Is the film set in the main MCU universe?
No. It is set on Earth-828, an alternate universe. It is still the Fantastic Four’s official MCU introduction, but it does not initially place them in the MCU’s primary reality.
Does Julia Garner play Norrin Radd?
No. Marvel identifies Garner’s character as Shalla-Bal, the Silver Surfer of Earth-828.
Is the film still waiting for Disney+?
No. Disney’s current official page lists it as streaming on Disney+. The previously promoted November 5, 2025 streaming date is no longer an upcoming release date.
