The Discord logo centers on Clyde, the company’s abstract, face-like mascot. In its original form, Clyde sat inside a rounded speech bubble; since Discord’s 2021 identity refresh, the icon can stand on its own. It is often read as a game controller, but Discord has not defined it as one literal object. The strongest reading is a deliberately flexible symbol that brings together gaming, communication and a friendly character.
What is the Discord logo called?
People use “Discord logo” to mean several related things. Clyde is the name Discord gives its face-like icon. The wordmark is the stylized “Discord” lettering, and a lockup combines the icon and wordmark. In the original identity, Clyde appeared inside a rounded rectangular speech bubble; that enclosing shape was a separate part of the visual system, not the name of the character.

Which version you see depends on where it is used. An app icon or avatar may show the symbol alone, while a website or other brand placement may pair it with the wordmark. Discord’s brand guidelines identify Clyde and the wordmark as Discord marks and provide current official assets and usage rules.

Is Clyde a controller, a face or a speech bubble?
The short answer is that it can suggest all three, but they are not equally documented as design facts.

- The face: Two circular features and a curved lower form give Clyde a simple, approachable expression. Discord has discussed using the character in different moods, such as happy or sleepy.
- The controller: The central body and rounded side forms can resemble a game controller, and the circular features invite comparison to controls. Gaming is part of Discord’s history, but the company’s explanation of the original mark does not define it as a literal controller.
- The speech bubble: The original rounded enclosure reads as a chat bubble, fitting a service for text, voice and video communication. Discord described that shape as Clyde’s “home.”
These readings work together without requiring a hidden code. The bubble connects the original mark to conversation; Clyde supplies a character; and the controller-like silhouette nods toward gaming. Discord founder Jason Citron later said the refreshed Clyde still pays homage to the company’s love of games, including through forms that evoke shoulder buttons. That supports a gaming association, not the claim that every version of the logo was designed as a controller.
Discord’s roots help explain the combination. The company describes its origins as building communication tools for people playing games together. That context makes the gaming interpretation plausible, but it cannot prove the intended meaning of each curve or circle.
The original Discord logo
Discord launched in 2015 with Clyde inside a rounded, horizontal speech-bubble form. The early icon had a less symmetrical silhouette, including narrow antenna-like extensions. The bubble made the mark read readily as a communication symbol, while Clyde’s face-like features gave it a distinctive character.
Over time, users supplied their own descriptions: controller, robot, smiling face and other playful comparisons. Discord has acknowledged that people see different things in Clyde. Those interpretations are part of the logo’s reception, not proof of a single official literal definition.
Why Discord refreshed the logo in 2021
On May 14, 2021, for Discord’s sixth birthday, the company announced an identity refresh. It described the project as an evolution rather than a clean break: the familiar mark remained recognizable, but the system was made more adaptable.
- Clyde became more symmetrical. Discord said the original mark’s horizontal imbalance made it harder to use consistently.
- The icon was freed from its bubble. The enclosure could limit how the symbol worked in interface elements, artwork and merchandise. Making Clyde independent gave the brand more layout options.
- The side forms changed. The narrow antenna-like points became broader, shoulder-like shapes. Discord said the earlier details did not reproduce well at small sizes or on physical surfaces.
- The character became more flexible. A standalone Clyde could be used as an expressive character, rather than always appearing inside one fixed container.
- The wordmark and palette were refreshed. The lettering and colors were adjusted to fit a broader, more adaptable identity.
The practical point is that the 2021 redesign was a systems problem as much as a cosmetic one. A logo has to survive in small interface spaces and in physical production, while also working alongside illustrations, text and other brand elements. Discord’s announcement of the refresh explains the company’s reasoning and shows how it sought to preserve familiarity while loosening the original constraints.
The wordmark: custom lettering based on Ginto
The 2021 update also changed the written “Discord” mark. Discord said it explored hundreds of typefaces before developing custom lettering based on Ginto, with adjustments intended to improve readability and complement Clyde’s character. It considered retaining all-capital lettering but chose title case, describing that treatment as more legible and more like a name.

There is no documented secret message in the letterforms. The published explanation emphasizes readability, tone and fit with the icon—not a hidden reference to musical dissonance or conflict.

Blurple is Discord’s own name for a core brand color, not a universal color standard. Discord’s current published brand guidelines list Blurple as #5865F2 and Light Blurple as #E0E3FF, alongside black. The company’s 2021 announcement described the refreshed Blurple as brighter and more saturated than the previous version, which it informally called “OG Blurple.”
Those values describe the published palette; they do not establish that the colors encode particular functions or a hidden story. Because official brand specifications can change, consult Discord’s current guidelines before reproducing the identity.
Was Clyde named after the Pac-Man ghost?
That is a fan theory, not a confirmed origin in the official Discord material cited here. Discord identifies the icon as Clyde, but the available official explanations do not give a definitive account of how the name was chosen. It is reasonable to say the name makes the figure easier to discuss as a character; it is not reasonable to present the Pac-Man connection as established fact.
The same caution applies to claims that each part of the logo has one precise symbolic meaning. Discord has explained design decisions—such as symmetry, scalability and the bubble constraint—but has not published an exhaustive symbolic key.
Using Discord’s logo
If you need the mark for an article, integration or other project, start with Discord’s official brand guidelines rather than a third-party image collection. Discord states that its logo, Clyde logo, wordmark, colors and related assets are its property. The guidelines restrict editing, distorting, recoloring, reconfiguring or creating confusingly similar marks, and limit uses such as branding a server, bot, company, product or merchandise without permission. Whether a particular use is permitted depends on the use case and the current rules, so check the live guidance before publishing or distributing an asset.
When showing a historical version, label it as historical and avoid presenting a fan-made recreation as official. Official assets should not be altered to illustrate a point.
The real meaning of the Discord logo
Clyde is best understood as an intentionally abstract, game-aware mascot—not a puzzle with one officially confirmed literal answer. In the original identity, the surrounding bubble connected the character to conversation. Its controller-like shape linked naturally to Discord’s gaming roots, while its face made the brand feel personable. The 2021 refresh separated those ideas so Clyde could work more freely across products and brand materials.
That ambiguity is part of the emblem’s usefulness: different viewers can recognize a face, a gaming reference or a communication mark without the design having to be only one of them.
