Microsoft stopped selling and renting movies and TV shows on July 18, 2025. The change affects Microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox. However, this is not the same as an announced immediate shutdown of playback: Microsoft says previously purchased movies and shows remain watchable through the Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows.
In other words, Microsoft has closed its digital video storefront, but existing customers have not automatically lost their libraries. The distinction matters—especially because digital purchases remain account-based licenses rather than unrestricted video files.
The short version
- New purchases and rentals: Ended July 18, 2025.
- Affected storefronts: Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and Microsoft Store on Xbox.
- Existing purchases: Microsoft says previously purchased movies and TV shows remain available in the Movies & TV app.

Microsoft ended the transactional part of Movies & TV: customers can no longer use Microsoft’s storefront to buy or rent new movies, purchase TV episodes, or buy complete TV seasons.

The closure should not be described as proof that every Movies & TV playback function has already disappeared. Microsoft continues to tell customers that previously purchased content can be watched through the Movies & TV app on supported Xbox and Windows devices. The app may also play personal videos where supported.
The storefront’s closure marks the end of Microsoft as a direct digital retailer of film and television, not the end of entertainment software on Xbox. Other video applications and transactional services remain available on Microsoft’s platforms.
What happens to movies and shows you already bought?
Microsoft says existing purchases remain accessible through the Movies & TV app. Access is tied to the Microsoft account used for the original transaction and depends on the supported application, compatible device, Microsoft’s service infrastructure, digital-rights-management systems, and the applicable content licenses.
That means continued access is not the same as receiving an ordinary, transferable MP4 or MKV file. A purchase gives the customer access to digitally licensed content through Microsoft’s account and playback systems. Microsoft has not, in the cited documentation, promised permanent lifetime support or published a final date for playback access.

Download behavior can also vary by device, title, region, resolution, and DRM restrictions. A supported download is not necessarily an unrestricted file that can be copied to another player. Check the Movies & TV app on the specific Windows or Xbox device rather than assuming every title has identical download options.
What you should do if you own a Microsoft video library
- Sign in to the correct Microsoft account. A missing title may simply belong to another account.
- Open Movies & TV on Xbox or Windows and confirm that your purchased library appears.
- Test important titles. Check at least a few movies and TV seasons, including content you may need offline.
- Download supported content where the app permits it, remembering that downloads may remain encrypted and account-bound.
- Save your records. Keep order numbers, receipts, screenshots, and a list of important purchases.
- Do not delete the associated Microsoft account or casually unlink connected services.
- Contact Microsoft Support if a title is missing or fails to play. Record the exact error before changing account settings.
If a title is missing
Possible causes include the wrong Microsoft account, an account or regional mismatch, an app synchronization problem, a temporary service failure, a licensing issue, or a purchase made under a different account. Sign out and back in, verify the account’s order history, update the app and operating system, then contact Microsoft with the transaction details.
If a movie works on Windows but not Xbox, treat that as a device, compatibility, authentication, or licensing problem—not immediate proof that the purchase has vanished. Test another supported device and preserve the error message.

Can Movies Anywhere save your movie library?
Movies Anywhere can connect participating digital retailers and make eligible movie entitlements available across those services. It is free to use, but it is available to U.S. residents aged 18 or older and applies only to eligible movies from participating studios.

Current participating retailers listed by Movies Anywhere include Apple TV/iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Google Play/YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV, and DIRECTV. Microsoft is not listed as a current retailer on the participants page.
Therefore, Movies Anywhere should not be presented as a universal Microsoft-library transfer tool. Some eligible movie entitlements already associated with a Microsoft account may have portability implications where the title, studio, account connection, and regional rules qualify. Check the individual title before assuming it will appear elsewhere.
Most importantly, Movies Anywhere does not cover TV episodes or TV seasons. Customers with Microsoft TV purchases generally have fewer migration options and should expect those purchases to remain tied to Microsoft’s platform for now. Movies Anywhere’s terms of use also describe access as a license, not ownership of unrestricted files.
Why this is another warning about digital ownership
The closure does not prove that all Microsoft customers will lose their purchases. Microsoft’s stated position is that existing movies and shows remain playable. But it does demonstrate the limits of digital ownership.

A digital “purchase” can depend on:
- Your user account and its authentication status
- The retailer’s servers and applications
- Digital-rights-management technology
- Studio and distribution agreements
- Supported devices and operating systems
- Regional availability and title-specific licenses
That is different from possessing a physical disc or an unrestricted local file. Even when a platform continues supporting a library, the customer has limited control over the delivery system. The Microsoft closure also shows why TV buyers may face greater risk than movie buyers: movies may sometimes be eligible for cross-retailer aggregation, while TV purchases generally are not.
Where can you buy or rent now?
Microsoft’s support guidance points customers toward other services. None should be described as offering guaranteed permanent ownership; digital purchases remain tied to the retailer’s account, licensing, and playback systems.

What about Xbox Game Pass?
Movies & TV was a transactional video store; Xbox Game Pass is primarily a gaming subscription. The closure does not convert purchased movies into Game Pass content, nor does Game Pass replace a Microsoft movie or TV library.

It is also too broad to say Microsoft is abandoning Xbox entertainment altogether. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Microsoft is withdrawing from direct digital sales and rentals of movies and television while continuing to operate its gaming and platform businesses.
Why did Microsoft leave the market?
Microsoft’s support notice does not provide a detailed public explanation. A reasonable strategic interpretation is that the company now prioritizes Xbox gaming, Game Pass, Windows, cloud services, and third-party entertainment applications rather than operating its own transactional video store.
The market is also crowded with established retailers such as Amazon, Apple, Fandango, and Google. Microsoft’s video storefront had roots reaching back to Xbox and Zune-era marketplaces, making the closure the end of a long-running distribution effort. But claims about low sales or a specific internal cause should not be stated as Microsoft’s official rationale.

Movie customers in the United States may be able to connect eligible titles to Movies Anywhere. That can provide additional viewing locations through participating retailers, although it does not create unrestricted ownership.
TV customers generally lack an equivalent migration system. Movies Anywhere does not transfer TV episodes or seasons, and there is no established universal mechanism that moves a Microsoft TV library to Amazon, Apple, or another retailer. If you bought complete seasons through Microsoft, verifying access and preserving your account records is especially important.
What Microsoft has not promised
- It has not announced a blanket refund for previously purchased content in the cited documentation.
- It has not announced automatic migration of every purchase to another retailer.
- It has not guaranteed that every title can be downloaded.
- It has not promised that playback will continue forever.
- It has not announced a separate final shutdown date for the Movies & TV playback app in the cited support page.
If you want a refund or a title fails to play, contact Microsoft Support with the original order information. Do not assume that the storefront closure alone creates an automatic refund entitlement.
