The Devil Wears Prada 2 is confirmed, finished and released. The sequel opened in U.S. theaters on May 1, 2026, and Disney’s current guide lists it as streaming on Disney+ as of July 29, 2026, with availability varying by market. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci return, but the story has moved far beyond Andy Sachs’s first days as Miranda Priestly’s assistant.
Yes—The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a real, released sequel, not an upcoming rumor. 20th Century Studios released the film theatrically in the United States on May 1, 2026. It is now available to stream on Disney+ in markets covered by Disney’s current guide, which identifies July 29, 2026 as the streaming-date update; Hulu availability and presentation vary by territory and subscription arrangement.

- Digital purchase: June 30, 2026

The sequel reunites the core filmmaking team and the three central stars from the 2006 movie, but it does not simply repeat Andy Sachs’s first-job transformation. Set roughly 20 years later, it moves the conflict into a declining print-media industry where professional power, advertising money, technology and institutional legacy have all changed hands.
What is The Devil Wears Prada 2 about?
Miranda Priestly is still editor-in-chief of Runway, but the magazine no longer commands the unquestioned influence it had in the original film. Traditional print publishing is shrinking, and Miranda must decide how to preserve her professional legacy while the business supporting it becomes less secure.

Disney’s official character material describes a scandal threatening Runway’s legacy. Trade coverage also presents the magazine as burdened by debt and facing acquisition pressure from technology-focused billionaires. Those developments belong to the sequel’s fictional story; they should not be read as a direct depiction of one specific real-world fashion or publishing company.
Andy is no longer the inexperienced assistant
Andy Sachs has moved well beyond the role she occupied in the first movie. In the sequel, she returns to Runway as its new features editor, with considerably more authority and professional confidence. Her renewed proximity to Miranda creates a different relationship: this is no longer an abusive editor testing a young assistant’s limits, but a confrontation between two mature professionals with competing ideas about work, success and responsibility.
Emily now controls the commercial leverage
Emily Charlton has also undergone the most important possible reversal of the original power structure. She is no longer Miranda’s assistant. She is now a senior executive at a luxury brand, identified by Disney as working at Dior, and controls access to advertising money that Runway urgently needs.
Miranda once controlled Emily’s career prospects. Now Emily possesses the commercial leverage that may determine whether Miranda’s magazine survives. That reversal gives the sequel a conflict the first film could not have: the former assistant is no longer asking for access to power—she has become one of the people who can grant or withhold it.
The sequel’s broader theme
Director David Frankel has characterized the first film as a coming-of-age story and the sequel as a story about a mature woman confronting the consequences of her life choices. That distinction explains why the new film is not simply another makeover narrative. Its central questions concern reinvention, the cost of professional ambition, the decline of legacy media, technology’s challenge to human-led institutions and the compromises required to keep a celebrated organization alive.
Cast: who returns?
| Actor | Character | Role in the sequel |
|---|---|---|
| Meryl Streep | Miranda Priestly | Runway’s editor-in-chief, fighting to protect her magazine and legacy. |
| Anne Hathaway | Andy Sachs | The former assistant, now Runway’s features editor. |
| Emily Blunt | Emily Charlton | A powerful luxury-brand executive whose advertising business matters to Runway’s survival. |
| Stanley Tucci | Nigel Kipling | Runway’s art director and Miranda’s trusted colleague, adapting to a more digital media environment. |
| Tracie Thoms | Lily | A returning character from the 2006 film. |
| Tibor Feldman | Irv Ravitz | A returning character from the original movie. |
The main reunion is therefore intact: Streep, Hathaway, Blunt and Tucci all return, with Thoms and Feldman also reprising their roles. The sequel’s premise depends on recognizing these characters while showing how much their professional positions have changed.
New cast and characters
| Actor | Character | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Kenneth Branagh | Stuart | Miranda’s husband, a violinist and composer with an independent creative life outside Runway. |
| Simone Ashley | Amari | One of Miranda’s newer assistants and the more senior member of the new assistant team. |
| Justin Theroux | Benji Barnes | A technology billionaire who believes technology can outmaneuver human-led media businesses. |
| Lucy Liu | Sasha Barnes | A glamorous philanthropist who may offer a route toward restoring Runway’s reputation. |
| B.J. Novak | Jay Ravitz | A prominent figure in the sequel’s fashion and media world, associated with a modern, constantly moving image. |
| Patrick Brammall | Peter | A pragmatic Australian who has worked his way upward and understands the compromises of professional success. |
| Caleb Hearon | Charlie | Miranda’s second assistant, who admires Nigel and brings a warmer energy to the office. |
| Helen J. Shen | Jin | Andy’s ambitious assistant, whose career trajectory echoes Andy’s early path into the fashion world. |
| Conrad Ricamora | Not specified in the accessible character guide | Included in the official 20th Century Studios cast announcement. |
| Pauline Chalamet | Not specified in the accessible character guide | Included in the official 20th Century Studios cast announcement. |
The new assistant team is particularly important thematically. Jin’s ambition recalls the young Andy, while Charlie’s admiration for Nigel gives the office a different emotional energy. The film can therefore show the fashion workplace from several generations’ perspectives rather than treating Andy as the only newcomer.

Its story is built around the changed professional relationship between Miranda, Andy and Emily instead.
Is the sequel based on another Devil Wears Prada book?
No. The sequel uses characters created by Lauren Weisberger, whose novel provided the source material for the original 2006 film, but The Devil Wears Prada 2 is not a direct adaptation of a second Weisberger novel. Aline Brosh McKenna and Frankel developed a new story in response to the changing media and publishing landscape.
Readers interested in the franchise’s original source can explore Lauren Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada novel, but it should be understood as source material for the first movie—not as the plot source for this sequel.
Production and creative team
The film was made by the principal creative team behind the 2006 movie:
- Director: David Frankel
- Screenwriter: Aline Brosh McKenna
- Characters based on: Lauren Weisberger’s original characters
- Producer: Wendy Finerman
- Executive producers: Michael Bederman, Karen Rosenfelt and Aline Brosh McKenna
- Director of photography: Florian Ballhaus, ASC
- Production designer: Jess Gonchor
- Editor: Andrew Marcus
- Composer: Theodore Shapiro
- Costume designer: Molly Rogers
- Casting: Ellen Lewis and Shayna Markowitz
The project was not presented as a routine studio continuation. Frankel and McKenna had discussed making a sequel earlier but did not want to proceed until they found a credible reason to reunite the characters. The project accelerated after a 2024 public reunion involving Streep, Hathaway and Blunt, and after Streep indicated that she would consider returning if the script was strong.
McKenna told Variety that the first meeting with Streep took place in 2024, that the first draft reached the actors in early January 2025 and that production moved quickly after the studio advanced the release date.
Where was The Devil Wears Prada 2 filmed?
New York City remains the sequel’s primary setting and filming location. Production also traveled to Italy, shooting in Milan and around Lake Como.

The Italian locations expand the film’s fashion-world scale in a way that recalls—but does not duplicate—the original movie’s Paris material. The sequel is not simply repeating the first film’s Paris Fashion Week storyline. Associated production coverage also documented Meryl Streep filming in Milan during a Dolce & Gabbana runway presentation, illustrating how the production used real fashion settings and events to give the fictional world additional scale.

Theatrical release
In the United States, 20th Century Studios released the film on May 1, 2026. Several international markets opened earlier, on April 29, including Italy, France, Switzerland, the Philippines and Indonesia.
Digital release
The official 20th Century Studios listing gives June 30, 2026 as the digital release date for purchase. Retailer availability, pricing and the exact digital edition can vary by country.
Streaming release
The film is now available on Disney+ according to Disney’s current guide, which identifies July 29, 2026 as the relevant streaming-date update. Disney also describes the title as available through Disney+ and Hulu in relevant markets. Because streaming catalogs are regional, a viewer should check the Disney+ or Hulu catalog for their own country rather than assuming that the same service or subscription bundle applies everywhere.
In practical terms, viewers have three legitimate viewing routes: a theatrical screening where still available, a digital purchase from a retailer serving their territory, or streaming through the relevant Disney service. No universal Hulu or Disney+ arrangement should be inferred for every country.

Box office and reception context
The sequel opened at number one in North America. According to Associated Press reporting based on studio estimates, its opening weekend brought in approximately $77 million in the United States and Canada and $156.6 million internationally. Women accounted for about 76% of opening-weekend ticket buyers, and AP specifically highlighted the appeal of seeing Hathaway’s Andy working again for Miranda at Runway.

A later Disney regional streaming guide described the film as having grossed more than $676 million worldwide and said the wider franchise had passed $1 billion. That is a reported snapshot rather than a permanently fixed final figure, so box-office totals should always be treated as date-sensitive.

Composer Theodore Shapiro also released a separate original-score album containing 20 tracks. Amazon Music lists the score as a May 1, 2026 release. For collectors, the most directly related physical-media search is The Devil Wears Prada 2 soundtrack vinyl. Edition, stock and territory should be checked before purchase, because the available format can differ between markets.
A soundtrack CD also exists in at least some territories, including a Universal Music Japan listing, but that should not be treated as proof of a universally available U.S. CD edition. Likewise, the research confirms the sequel’s score album but does not establish a single worldwide physical format for it.
What makes this sequel different from the first film?
- Andy’s position has changed: she is now an editor with authority rather than an assistant trying to survive her first major job.
- Emily’s power has changed: she controls luxury-brand advertising money and can influence whether Runway gets the support it needs.
- Miranda’s threat is structural: the danger comes from declining print media, debt, scandal and technology-driven acquisition pressure—not just from one demanding boss.
- The story is about legacy: Miranda must consider what preserving her institution requires and what her career has cost.
- The setting is broader: New York, Milan and Lake Como place the characters in a contemporary international fashion and media ecosystem.
- The sequel is original: it draws on Weisberger’s characters but is not adapting a second novel.
Related soundtrack and source material
Two related purchases make sense for different audiences. A soundtrack record is the most direct collectible connected to the sequel, while the original The Devil Wears Prada book by Lauren Weisberger is best suited to readers who want to revisit the source behind the 2006 film. Neither should be confused with a novelization or second book that supplies the sequel’s screenplay.

Bottom line: The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a released, PG-13 sequel that reunites Miranda, Andy, Emily and Nigel roughly two decades later. Its central conflict is not Andy learning the fashion business again; it is Runway fighting to survive as print media declines and the people around Miranda gain new forms of professional power.
