The Day of the Jackal Review: Does Peacock’s Thriller Refresh the Genre?

Peacock’s modern adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s novel gives its assassin-and-intelligence-officer chase a two-lead focus. The ten-episode format is both its opportunity and its pacing test.

The Day of the Jackal makes a strong case for a modern thriller through its central pursuit: a highly capable paid assassin, played by Eddie Redmayne, is hunted across Europe by British intelligence officer Bianca, played by Lashana Lynch. Its contemporary adaptation and two-lead structure give the familiar cat-and-mouse premise room to feel current. But the ten-episode format also raises the key question behind the show’s genre claim: does expanding the story deepen the chase, or simply make it longer?

What is Peacock’s The Day of the Jackal about?

This ten-episode series follows the Jackal, an elusive assassin whose latest job puts him in conflict with Bianca, a tenacious British intelligence officer pursuing him across Europe. Úrsula Corberó is also among the principal cast. Peacock credits Brian Kirk as director and Ronan Bennett as writer; Redmayne is an executive producer, and Frederick Forsyth is a consulting producer. Peacock’s series announcement describes the setup and credits.

The show is based on Forsyth’s 1971 novel. That makes it a modern adaptation of the book, not simply a direct remake of the 1973 film. The distinction matters: the series is working with a story first conceived in a different political era, while its ten-part structure gives it more room than a compact thriller premise typically needs. The available official description establishes the adaptation, but not a scene-by-scene account of what changed.

Does the series actually refresh the thriller genre?

Partly. The refresh comes less from abandoning the assassin-versus-investigator formula than from shifting its context and emphasis. A story rooted in a 1971 political-assassination novel now arrives as a contemporary pursuit, with an intelligence officer and an assassin sharing the dramatic focus. That update gives the familiar chase a present-day frame; the series’ strongest argument for renewal is its two-sided view of the hunt rather than a claim that the underlying premise is unprecedented.

That framing also creates a useful tension. A thriller can make its hunter and hunted compelling professionals while keeping the chase moving; it can also broaden their lives until the pursuit loses urgency. The expanded personal and family material is therefore a genuine test of the adaptation, not automatically a strength or a flaw. It can make the characters’ choices feel more consequential, but each detour has to earn the time it takes from the central conflict.

What works best: the cat-and-mouse structure

Two leads, two kinds of pressure

Redmayne’s Jackal and Lynch’s Bianca give the show a clear opposing pair. The assassin’s work and the officer’s pursuit supply the forward drive, while the characters’ professional and personal lives offer a way to build pressure beyond the next move in the chase. That balance is the series’ most promising structural choice: Bianca is not merely a device to send the Jackal from one set piece to another, and the Jackal is more than an anonymous target.

A premise with room to build suspense

The pursuit across Europe gives the series a broad canvas, and the basic conflict is legible from the outset. Viewers do not need extensive background to understand what each lead wants or why their paths are converging. The adaptation’s challenge is sustaining that clarity over ten episodes—making each expansion of the story add complications or character stakes rather than feel like an interruption.

Where the ten-episode format can work against it

The same expansion that distinguishes the show from a leaner version of the premise can soften its momentum. Following both the assassin and the officer creates more opportunities for suspense, but the added personal and family strands need to intensify the consequences of the hunt. If they mainly delay its next turn, the serial format risks stretching a strong setup past its natural pace.

This is the most useful way to assess the show’s length: not by assuming that ten episodes are inherently too many, but by asking whether each strand changes how the pursuit unfolds or what its outcome means. The series’ reach and dual focus are part of its appeal; they are also what make pacing its central vulnerability.

Is The Day of the Jackal worth watching?

For viewers who enjoy methodical pursuits, capable adversaries and a thriller that gives both sides of a hunt room to develop, yes. The premise is immediately engaging, and the modern adaptation has a clear reason to exist beyond repeating the title’s familiar setup. Those looking for a relentlessly compact chase may be less persuaded if the character and family material feels like extension rather than escalation.

Rotten Tomatoes’ listing showed an 85% Tomatometer from 53 reviews and a 77% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. Those live figures are a reception snapshot, not proof that the series innovates or a substitute for judging its pacing and character work yourself. Rotten Tomatoes’ series listing also classifies it as TV-MA and lists crime, drama and action among its genres.

Where and when did it premiere?

The UK launch on Sky was November 7, 2024. In the United States, Peacock released the first five episodes on November 14, 2024, followed by weekly Thursday episodes and a two-episode finale on December 12. These are the original launch dates, not confirmation of present-day availability in every country. Comcast reported that the series drew 711,000 overnight viewers at its Sky premiere and 3 million viewers in its first seven days, describing it as Sky’s biggest Sky Original at the time. These are figures reported by Comcast in 2024, not a measure of critical quality. In the same announcement, Sky executive Meghan Lyvers praised the show’s storytelling, scope and performances; as a promotional statement from an executive at the broadcaster, that praise should be read in that context.

Should you read Forsyth’s novel?

The 1971 novel is a worthwhile companion if you want to see the source behind the modern series. Read it as the original version of the premise, not as a scene-by-scene guide to the show: the official adaptation material establishes the relationship but does not document every change. Comparing how a concise source story becomes a ten-episode pursuit is part of the adaptation’s appeal.
