The most important late-series clarification is that the Upside Down and the Abyss are not the same place. The Abyss is the deeper realm associated with the Mind Flayer, Demogorgons, vines, and other creatures. The Upside Down is a dark, time-frozen Hawkins-like bridge connecting Earth to the Abyss.

1959: The First Shadow
Stranger Things: The First Shadow is an officially recognized, canon prequel set in Hawkins in 1959, long before the television story begins. It follows a younger Henry Creel and younger versions of Joyce Maldonado, Jim Hopper Jr., Bob Newby, and other future Hawkins residents.
At this point, Hawkins has not yet become the center of a public supernatural crisis. The play’s value is partly mythological and partly human: it gives Henry a history in the town and shows the relationships, fears, and social world surrounding the people who will later become central to the series.
The play should be treated as an expansion of the television canon, not as a replacement for Season 4. It establishes an earlier chapter in Henry’s life, but the show’s account of his powers, his connection to Dr. Brenner, his identity as One, and his transformation into Vecna still comes primarily from the Season 4 flashbacks and the Season 5 mythology.
1979: Henry Creel becomes One
Henry Creel’s supernatural abilities exist before the main series. By 1979, Dr. Martin Brenner has turned the study and replication of psychic abilities into the Hawkins Lab program. Henry becomes One, the first numbered subject, and works inside the laboratory as an orderly.
One manipulates Eleven into removing the device that suppresses his powers. Once free, he murders the other children and much of the lab staff. Eleven confronts him in the Rainbow Room and defeats him by using her own abilities to banish him into another realm.
Season 4 initially presents that destination as the Upside Down. Season 5 refines the explanation: Henry is sent to the Abyss, while Eleven’s later contact with that realm helps form the Upside Down as a bridge or wormhole-like environment between Hawkins and the Abyss.
How Henry, One, and Vecna are connected
- Henry Creel: the human with psychic abilities.
- One: Henry’s identity as Brenner’s first numbered test subject and a Hawkins Lab orderly.
- Vecna: the transformed version of Henry after Eleven defeats and banishes him.
These are not three separate villains. They are three stages of the same character’s history. Henry’s resentment of human society, his contempt for ordinary life, and his desire to impose his own order eventually become the ideology behind Vecna’s campaign against Hawkins.

November 6–December 1983: Season 1
Season 1 begins on November 6, 1983. After a Dungeons & Dragons session, Will Byers leaves Mike Wheeler’s house and disappears while riding home. On the same night, Eleven escapes from Hawkins National Laboratory.
Will’s disappearance brings Mike, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, Joyce Byers, and Chief Jim Hopper into the same investigation. Eleven, who has been raised and experimented on inside the laboratory, becomes the group’s connection to the secret experiments and to the creature that is hunting in Hawkins.

The main events
- Will enters the Upside Down. He survives there while the Demogorgon searches for prey.
- Eleven joins the search. Mike, Dustin, and Lucas hide her and gradually learn that she can locate people and influence the physical world with her mind.
- Joyce communicates with Will. Will uses lights and electrical disturbances to signal that he is alive.
- Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers investigate Barb’s disappearance. Their investigation connects Barb’s fate to the same creature and alternate realm.
- Hopper and Joyce enter the Upside Down. They find Will and rescue him.
- Eleven confronts the Demogorgon. At Hawkins Middle School, she destroys the creature and apparently sacrifices herself.
The Christmas-time ending provides two important clues. Will is home, but he is not completely free of the supernatural influence: he briefly experiences the Upside Down and coughs up a slug-like organism. Hopper leaves supplies in the woods, suggesting that Eleven survived and is hiding nearby. Season 1 therefore resolves Will’s immediate disappearance without resolving the larger threat.
Late 1984: Season 2
Season 2 takes place roughly a year after Will’s disappearance. Will has returned to Hawkins, but his connection to the other realm has not ended. He experiences visions and episodes in which he sees a massive shadow creature: the Mind Flayer.

The Mind Flayer attempts to expand its influence from the Upside Down into the human world. Will becomes its principal psychic connection to Hawkins, allowing the entity to observe and control events. At the same time, Dustin’s discovery of Dart reveals an early stage in the Demogorgon life cycle, while the spreading tunnels beneath Hawkins show that the invasion is no longer limited to a single monster or one location.
Eleven closes the gate
The season’s central resolution comes when Eleven returns to Hawkins Lab and closes the gate. Her action severs the Mind Flayer’s immediate connection to Will and blocks the invasion from spreading into Hawkins.
This is a containment victory, not a permanent defeat. The Mind Flayer remains a threat, and the supernatural consequences of the earlier opening do not simply disappear. That is why Tales From ’85 can fit after Season 2: Hawkins looks calmer, but the gate closure has not erased everything the Upside Down has changed.
January 1985: Tales From ’85
The animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 takes place during the bitterly cold winter of 1985, between Seasons 2 and 3. Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, Max, Hopper, and Steve return in animated form, joined by new characters including Nikki Baxter.
Its position in the chronology matters because Season 2 appears to close the Hawkins Lab gate. The animated story is not simply another version of the open-gate invasion seen in Season 1. Its official premise describes a mystery involving Hawkins Lab science, Upside Down matter, and something that may have survived or developed after the previous events.
In other words, Tales From ’85 is an intervening Hawkins incident. It should be placed after Eleven closes the gate and before the Soviet operation beneath Starcourt Mall. It is not a continuation of the Season 4 or Season 5 apocalypse.
Summer 1985: Season 3
Season 3 moves the story into the summer of 1985. The newly opened Starcourt Mall becomes the center of Hawkins life—and the cover for a secret Soviet facility built beneath it.
The Russians use a machine to reopen a gate. This explains how supernatural access returns after Eleven’s earlier closure: the Season 2 gate was closed, but the Soviet device creates a new route.

The Mind Flayer builds a body
The Mind Flayer begins its attack through rats and then human hosts. Billy Hargrove becomes its most important human vessel. Under the entity’s control, Billy helps recruit and transform other residents into “flayed” hosts. Their bodies and organic material are used to construct a physical monster in Hawkins.
Eleven and the teenagers confront that creature at Starcourt while Hopper, Joyce, and Murray work to destroy the Russian gate machine. Joyce shuts down the machine, apparently killing Hopper. The physical Mind Flayer manifestation is destroyed, but the victory comes at a heavy cost: Eleven loses her powers after the battle, and the Byers family leaves Hawkins with her.
Why Hopper is alive
Season 3’s post-credits scene reveals that Hopper may have survived and is being held in a Russian prison. Season 4 resolves the apparent contradiction. When the machine explodes, Hopper falls to a lower platform rather than being disintegrated. The Russians capture him and transport him to Russia.
The date frozen in the Upside Down
Season 3 also establishes a crucial rule: the Upside Down is frozen as a snapshot of Hawkins on November 6, 1983, the night Will vanished and the first major gate opened. It does not update as the human town changes. This detail becomes important in Season 4, when Nancy and the others move through an Upside Down version of Hawkins that is stuck in the past.

Spring 1986: Season 4
Season 4 is primarily set in 1986, although its most important revelations return to 1979. A new killer, Vecna, attacks psychologically vulnerable victims through visions shaped by guilt, shame, trauma, and fear.
The season eventually reveals that Vecna is Henry Creel—the same person who became One and was banished by Eleven in 1979. The mystery of the new murders is therefore connected directly to the laboratory massacre and to the origins of the creatures haunting Hawkins.
The story splits across four locations
- Hawkins: Max, Lucas, Dustin, Steve, Robin, Nancy, Eddie, and Erica investigate the murders, the Creel House, and the connection between Vecna and the rifts.
- California: Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle deal with Eleven’s disappearance and the continuing government pursuit of her.
- Nevada: Eleven enters the Nina project to recover her powers by reliving suppressed memories of the Hawkins Lab massacre.
- Russia: Joyce and Murray attempt to rescue Hopper from imprisonment.
Vecna’s four murders
Vecna’s plan depends on four murders that create a convergence of gates. Max becomes the fourth target. Eleven enters Max’s mind and fights Vecna, while the Hawkins group attacks him through the Creel House. They injure him but do not kill him.
Max is critically injured and left in a coma. Eddie Munson dies while distracting the Demobats, giving the others time to carry out their attack. The four rifts open, Hawkins is split and devastated, and the group realizes that the battle has entered a new phase rather than ended.
Fall 1987: Season 5
Season 5 begins in fall 1987, after the rifts have scarred Hawkins. The town is under military quarantine, the government is hunting Eleven, and the remaining heroes reunite around one objective: find and kill Vecna.
The anniversary of Will’s disappearance brings the supernatural threat back into focus. The final season’s episode titles are:

The Abyss, the Upside Down, and Earth
Season 5 provides the series’ final cosmological distinction. The monsters do not ultimately come from the Upside Down as if it were their original home. They come from the Abyss, the deeper realm associated with the Mind Flayer, Demogorgons, vines, and the broader creature ecosystem.
The Upside Down is the connective environment between Hawkins and the Abyss. It resembles Hawkins because it functions as a bridge to the town, but it is also locked to the date of November 6, 1983. This explains why the series can show a dark version of Hawkins without treating it as a second, independently evolving Earth.
The final assault
Vecna attempts to merge the Abyss with Earth. Eleven and Kali attack Henry in Camazotz, buying time for the rest of the group to enter the Abyss and rescue the kidnapped children from the Pain Tree.
The final battle defeats Vecna and ends the immediate supernatural war. However, the series deliberately gives Eleven a different kind of ending from the other principal characters. During the final Dungeons & Dragons game, Mike tells a hopeful version in which Kali creates an illusion that lets Eleven escape and live anonymously elsewhere. The Duffer Brothers leave the literal truth unresolved: Eleven’s survival is intentionally left for viewers to decide.
Where the characters end up
The epilogue jumps forward after the final battle and gives the surviving characters different paths into adulthood:

The group remains close and promises recurring reunions. Hopper and Joyce remain together. Hopper proposes after their date at Enzo’s, and they plan to move to Montauk, New York, where a police-chief job is waiting for Hopper. The move is also a callback to the earliest conception of Stranger Things, when the story was initially imagined as taking place in Montauk.
What the Upside Down actually is
The mythology is easiest to understand as a three-part structure:
| Realm | Role in the story |
|---|---|
| Earth | The human world, including Hawkins, the laboratory, Starcourt Mall, and the surrounding communities. |
| The Upside Down | A dark, Hawkins-like, time-frozen intermediary environment. It connects the human world to the deeper supernatural realm. |
| The Abyss | The deeper realm presented as the home of the Mind Flayer, Demogorgons, vines, and other creatures. |
There are two chronology rules to keep separate:
- Henry’s banishment comes first. In 1979, Eleven sends Henry into the Abyss, according to the Season 5 clarification.
- The Upside Down is date-locked later. Its Hawkins-like form is frozen at November 6, 1983, when Will disappears and the first major gate opens.
That is why it is inaccurate to use “Upside Down” and “Abyss” as interchangeable names after Season 5. The former is the bridge; the latter is the deeper source of the monster ecosystem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Canon boundaries: what belongs in this timeline?
For a clean chronology, use this hierarchy:
- Primary television canon: Seasons 1–5 and Netflix’s official episode material.
- Official expanded canon: The First Shadow and Tales From ’85, clearly labeled as a stage play and an animated series.
- Licensed supplementary material: novels, comics, games, cookbooks, merchandise, and behind-the-scenes guides. These should be placed in a separate expanded-universe section rather than automatically folded into the television continuity.
- Fan timelines and wikis: useful for checking episode order and dates, but not authoritative when they conflict with official material.
Do not claim that every licensed book or game occurs in exactly the same continuity as the television series. A product can be officially licensed without supplying a new, binding event in the main timeline.

Go deeper without confusing canon and metaphor
For a physical reference after the chronology, the official Stranger Things companion book, Stranger Things: The Official Story Behind the Legendary Series, is designed as a behind-the-scenes guide covering all five seasons with creator commentary, photographs, maps, storyboards, and concept art. It is useful for production history and visual reference, but it should not be treated as a scene-by-scene replacement for the timeline above.
The show’s Dungeons & Dragons language works similarly as a tool for understanding the monsters. The characters use familiar game names and metaphors to describe things they do not yet understand; the campaigns themselves are not automatically literal events in television canon. Fans interested in that motif can explore the Stranger Things D&D starter set, while keeping its tabletop adventure separate from the series’ actual chronology.
Best watch order
For a first-time viewer
Watch the television series in release order: Season 1 → Season 2 → Season 3 → Season 4 → Season 5. This preserves the intended reveals, especially the gradual discovery of the laboratory’s history and the later revelation that Henry, One, and Vecna are the same person.
After the main series, watch or attend the official expanded stories. The First Shadow works as a prequel once the television mythology is familiar, while Tales From ’85 can be placed between Seasons 2 and 3 for a chronological rewatch.
For a chronological rewatch
- Stranger Things: The First Shadow — 1959.
- The Season 4 flashbacks covering Henry’s history and the 1979 Hawkins Lab massacre.
- Season 1 — November to December 1983.
- Season 2 — late 1984.
- Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 — January 1985.
- Season 3 — summer 1985.
- Season 4’s main 1986 storyline.
- Season 5 — fall 1987.
- The Season 5 epilogue.
There is no practical need to interrupt Season 4 every time it cuts back to 1979. For most viewers, watching the season in its released episode order is clearer; the list above simply identifies where its flashback material belongs in the larger history.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the chronological order of Stranger Things?
The chronological order is The First Shadow (1959), the Season 4 flashbacks and 1979 Hawkins Lab massacre, Season 1 (1983), Season 2 (1984), Tales From ’85 (January 1985), Season 3 (summer 1985), Season 4 (1986), and Season 5 (fall 1987).
Should I watch Stranger Things in release order or chronological order?
For a first viewing, watch Seasons 1 through 5 in release order. The series’ major revelations—including the connection between Henry, One, and Vecna—are designed to unfold that way. Add The First Shadow and Tales From ’85 afterward or during a chronological rewatch.
Are the Upside Down and the Abyss the same place?
No. Season 5 distinguishes them. The Abyss is the deeper realm associated with the Mind Flayer, Demogorgons, vines, and other creatures. The Upside Down is a dark, Hawkins-like, time-frozen bridge connecting Earth to the Abyss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow are Henry Creel, One, and Vecna connected?
Henry Creel becomes One when he is made the first numbered subject in Dr. Brenner’s Hawkins Lab program. After Eleven defeats and banishes him in 1979, he is transformed into Vecna.
Does Eleven survive the Stranger Things finale?
The show intentionally does not give a definitive literal answer. Mike tells a hopeful Dungeons & Dragons version in which Kali creates an illusion that lets Eleven escape and live anonymously elsewhere, but the finale leaves viewers to decide whether that is what really happened.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The chronological order is The First Shadow in 1959, the One massacre in 1979, Seasons 1 and 2, Tales From ’85 in January 1985, Seasons 3 and 4, Season 5 in fall 1987, and the epilogue. The final mythology distinguishes the Upside Down—the frozen bridge—from the Abyss, the deeper home of the monsters, while Eleven’s ultimate fate remains intentionally open.
