Led by Imogen Poots, The Chronology of Water moves through family violence, swimming, sexuality, addiction and grief toward writing as a form of release. Its impressionistic intensity can make the experience compelling—and, at times, difficult to follow.
What is The Chronology of Water about?
The film follows Lidia from a violent, alcohol-ravaged home into competitive swimming, sexual experimentation, relationships and addiction, before writing becomes a route toward self-expression. Those episodes are not presented as a simple checklist of hardships overcome. The story’s center is the struggle to make meaning from a life marked by contradiction, damage and moments of possibility.
That scope matters: reducing the film to “sex and drugs” misses its concern with memory, the body and the effort to claim a voice. Swimming is more than a biographical detail; it gives the film a physical vocabulary for discipline, escape and strain. Writing, in turn, offers not a neat cure but a way to shape experience into something speakable.
Is it based on a true story?
The Chronology of Water is adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s autobiographical memoir. Kristen Stewart and Andy Mingo wrote the screenplay from the book. That autobiographical source gives the film a personal foundation, but it does not make every dramatized scene independently verified fact. The adaptation is a cinematic interpretation of Yuknavitch’s account, not a documentary record.

How does the film turn memoir into cinema?
Rather than build a conventional cradle-to-adulthood portrait, Stewart leans into fragments and impressions. The form mirrors a life recalled through charged moments rather than a clean sequence of turning points. This can be a productive choice: memory rarely arrives as a perfectly ordered timeline, and the film’s broken rhythms make instability part of its subject.

The trade-off is legibility. When episodes arrive as shards, viewers looking for clear transitions or explanatory context may find the life story hard to assemble. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian captures the tension by calling the film “choppy but compelling,” while also noting “some callow indie indulgences.” His assessment is useful not as a consensus verdict but as a description of the film’s risk: its formal restlessness can communicate emotional disorder, yet occasionally feel over-insistent.
Does Imogen Poots provide a center?
Poots plays Lidia, and her performance gives continuity to a film that resists the usual biographical arc. Instead of smoothing the character into a consistent hero, she makes room for volatility, self-sabotage and change. Poots described Lidia to the Associated Press as a person whose life is “so rich with inconsistencies and successes and sabotage,” adding, “She’s kind of like the weather.” That image suits a portrayal built around shifts in emotional climate rather than a steady march toward resolution.

The close attention to bodies and sensation can make the film feel immediate, especially when paired with Poots’s willingness to let Lidia remain difficult and contradictory. It can also create distance if the intensity begins to feel like pressure rather than discovery. The performance helps hold the film together, but it does not remove the demands of its fractured structure.
Who stars in the film, and who made it?
Imogen Poots leads the cast as Lidia, with Jim Belushi and Thora Birch among the other listed performers. Stewart directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Andy Mingo. Corey C. Waters is the cinematographer, and Olivia Neergaard-Holm edited the film. It is a France, Latvia and United States production.

The film premiered in the 2025 Cannes selection, where it was listed in Un Certain Regard. Festival de Cannes lists its runtime as 128 minutes. Stewart told the Associated Press that the project was “eight years in the making and then a really accelerated push,” comparing that final stretch to childbirth.

Is it worth watching?
This is a demanding choice for viewers who want a brisk, explanatory biography. Its episodes do not always connect with the clarity of a conventional life story, and its intensity may strike some as excess. But the fragmentation has an expressive purpose, Poots supplies a vivid human center, and the film treats writing as a hard-won act of self-definition rather than an easy resolution. Bradshaw’s other phrase, “an earnest and heartfelt piece of work,” points to the emotional commitment that gives the experiment its force.
