What book is Edge of Tomorrow based on?
The source is Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s science-fiction light novel All You Need Is Kill, published by Shueisha in 2004, according to Gizmodo’s March 2025 report. The novel, its adaptations, and the 2014 live-action movie are related works, not identical versions of one story.

What is known about the anime?
Gizmodo reported that Warner Bros. Japan announced an anime film adaptation in March 2025. The report names Studio4°C as the animation studio and Kenichiro Akimoto as director. It describes the project as a retelling centered on Rita Vrataski rather than the live-action movie’s Cage, a romanized form of Keiji’s name.
According to Gizmodo’s account of the announcement, the release framed Rita’s story around her inner journey, loneliness, and personal growth. That is the reported creative framing, not a description based on a released film.

How the novel’s adaptations differ
| Work | Medium and reported focus | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| All You Need Is Kill | Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s science-fiction light novel | Published by Shueisha in 2004, as reported by Gizmodo. |
| All You Need Is Kill manga | Manga adaptation illustrated by Takeshi Obata | The 2014 manga is part of the reported adaptation chronology in Gizmodo’s coverage. |
| Edge of Tomorrow | 2014 live-action film; the report contrasts its focus on Cage/Keiji with Rita’s anime perspective | Director Doug Liman discussed the title choice in an interview excerpt reproduced by LRM Online. |
| Anime film adaptation | Anime retelling described as focused on Rita Vrataski | Gizmodo names Studio4°C and director Kenichiro Akimoto; an Australian festival program later listed the film, but does not establish broad release availability. |
The adaptation chronology—from the 2004 novel to a 2014 manga, the live-action film, and the announced anime—is reported by Gizmodo. The most clearly reported distinction for viewers familiar with the movie is the anime’s shift toward Rita’s point of view. The available reports do not establish that the anime is more faithful to the novel.
Has the anime been released?
A September 2026 program listing for the Australian Japanese Film Festival included All You Need Is Kill among its animation selections. The listing describes it as an adaptation of Sakurazaka’s novel focused on the female lead, and credits Studio 4°C and Warner Bros. Japan (eGlobal Travel Media).
This supports a listing in an Australian festival program. It does not establish a general Australian theatrical date, streaming service, home-video release, or worldwide availability. The sources cited here do not confirm a current broad release schedule.

In an interview excerpt reproduced by LRM Online from a Den of Geek interview, director Doug Liman said the studio wanted the title Edge Of Tomorrow, while he preferred Live Die Repeat. He said he “fought vehemently and lost.” Liman also explained that All You Need Is Kill did not feel like the right tone for the action comedy he had made (LRM Online).
