The Bondsman is a supernatural horror comedy about a murdered bounty hunter forced to track escaped demons, but its appeal rests on more than monster-of-the-week chaos. Kevin Bacon gives the series a loose, lived-in center as it mixes graphic gore and deadpan humor with country music and a story about repairing a damaged family. It should suit viewers who enjoy horror that knows how ridiculous it can be; its tonal shifts and uneven momentum may be less convincing for anyone looking for sustained scares or tightly escalating drama.
What is The Bondsman about?
Kevin Bacon plays Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter who has been murdered and brought back by the Devil. His new job is to capture escaped demons and return them to Hell. As Hub pursues them, he also confronts the sins that condemned his own soul and gets a chance to make amends with his family and revisit his musical ambitions.

The premise gives the show two kinds of unfinished business: supernatural fugitives to catch and human relationships Hub damaged before his death. That combination keeps the demon hunts from being the only source of story, though the balance between those threads is a question of taste.
Is The Bondsman scary or funny?
It aims for both, with graphic horror and practical, often deadpan responses to the absurdity of demons inhabiting human bodies. Showrunner Erik Oleson described the series as a mash-up of horror, comedy, music, and family drama. The humor does not erase the gore; much of the intended effect comes from setting grisly events beside characters treating demon-hunting as a problem that has to be dealt with.

The result is closer to campy horror-comedy than straight horror. Viewers who enjoy a knowingly scruffy tone and abrupt shifts between grotesque and funny are the clearest fit. Those who want dread to dominate, or who find jokes undercutting horror frustrating, may be less receptive.
What works—and what may not
Kevin Bacon gives the tonal mix a center
Bacon’s Hub has to move between demonic violence, comedy, regret, and family conflict. His presence helps make those different registers feel like parts of one character rather than unrelated ingredients. Jennifer Nettles, Beth Grant, Damon Herriman, Maxwell Jenkins, and Jolene Purdy round out the principal cast.
The family and music elements add a different kind of stake
Hub’s effort to address his failures as a husband and father gives the story consequences beyond whether he can return a demon to Hell. Country music is part of the premise rather than incidental decoration: Hub’s musical ambitions connect the supernatural job to the life he might still try to reclaim.
The episodic premise has to sustain a larger story
Escaped demons create a natural sequence of individual hunts, while Hub’s redemption and family relationships point toward a season-long arc. That structure offers variety, but critics did not respond uniformly to its execution: some praised the show’s confident approach, while another review noted that it starts strongly and loses momentum. The question is not just whether the premise is entertaining, but whether the hunts and personal story keep building together.
What did critics and viewers think?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 83% Tomatometer from 29 critic reviews and a 78% Popcornmeter from more than 250 audience ratings on October 8, 2026. These are changeable aggregator snapshots, not measures of how many people watched the series or proof that it will become a hit. The critics’ consensus praised its gruesome comedy and Bacon’s “devilish charm,” while the reviews represented on the page differed on how well the show maintained its momentum.

For a viewer deciding whether to try it, the split is useful context: the ingredients and Bacon’s performance have drawn favorable notice, but the season’s staying power is not universally praised. The scores describe the ratings recorded at that date, not a guaranteed response for every viewer.

The series debuted exclusively on Prime Video on April 3, 2025. Its first season has eight episodes, all available to stream according to Amazon. Amazon says the series is offered in more than 240 countries and territories, but a stated footprint does not guarantee access in every local catalog.

Is The Bondsman worth watching?
Try it if you want a bloody, irreverent supernatural series in which demon-hunting shares space with family repair and country music. Its strongest draw is the unusual combination, anchored by Bacon; the main caveat is that the episodic hunts and the broader story may not sustain their momentum equally well. It is a promising pick for camp-horror fans, not a guaranteed hit or a fit for viewers seeking a consistently serious scare.
