Secondary character summaries associate Leonard Hofstadter with Princeton, Raj with Cambridge, Howard Wolowitz with MIT, Amy Farrah Fowler with Harvard and Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz with Caltech. Penny is reported to have taken a history class at an unnamed Pasadena community college. Sheldon Cooper’s undergraduate institution is less certain: accounts link him to the University of Texas at Austin and Caltech, but the sources reviewed do not establish a definitive undergraduate school from primary episode evidence.
Where each main character is reported to have studied
The institutions below are reported in secondary character summaries; they should not be confused with the characters’ jobs or treated as a definitive record of every detail shown in the series.
| Character | Institution reported | Field or credential reported | What is established—and what is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leonard Hofstadter | Princeton | Doctorate in experimental physics | El Comercio reports Princeton. The Television Academy overview identifies Leonard as an experimental physicist at Caltech, his workplace, but does not confirm Princeton. El Comercio; Television Academy |
| Rajesh “Raj” Koothrappali | Cambridge | Astronomy study | El Comercio associates Raj with Cambridge. The Television Academy overview describes him as a particle astrophysicist and postdoctoral researcher at Caltech. The reviewed account does not establish a specific Cambridge degree. El Comercio; Television Academy |
| Howard Wolowitz | MIT | Master’s degree in engineering | El Comercio reports an engineering master’s from MIT. The Television Academy overview describes Howard as an aerospace engineer and explicitly as a non-PhD. El Comercio; Television Academy |
| Penny | Unnamed Pasadena community college | A history class | El Comercio and Canal 5 report that Penny took a history class at a community college in Pasadena. Neither names the college, and these accounts do not establish that she graduated. El Comercio; Canal 5 |
| Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz | Caltech | Doctorate in microbiology | El Comercio and Canal 5 associate Bernadette’s microbiology doctorate with Caltech. The Television Academy overview calls her a microbiology student but does not name the institution; the specific school claim rests on secondary summaries. El Comercio; Canal 5; Television Academy |
| Amy Farrah Fowler | Harvard | Neuroscience study | El Comercio and Canal 5 associate Amy with Harvard. Canal 5 also discusses actress Mayim Bialik’s UCLA doctorate in a way that can blur actor and character; that biography is not evidence of Amy’s schooling. El Comercio; Canal 5 |
| Sheldon Cooper | Accounts cite the University of Texas at Austin and Caltech | His undergraduate institution is not conclusively established in the reviewed sources | El Comercio and Canal 5 describe a Texas-to-Caltech route. A fan-maintained profile gives details about his early college years and first doctorate without naming his undergraduate university. The Television Academy overview establishes Caltech as his workplace, not necessarily his alma mater. El Comercio; Canal 5; fan-maintained character profile; Television Academy |
Caltech is the group’s workplace, not a universal alma mater
Caltech is the scientific workplace most central to the series: Leonard and Sheldon work there as physicists, and Raj is a postdoctoral astrophysics researcher there, according to the Television Academy overview. That workplace connection is distinct from a claim that every character studied at Caltech. The same overview credits its descriptive text to Wikipedia, so it is a series overview rather than an episode transcript or primary record of each character’s education.
Keep Amy Fowler’s education separate from Mayim Bialik’s
Amy Farrah Fowler is a fictional character whose Harvard neuroscience association appears in secondary summaries. Mayim Bialik, the actor who plays her, attended UCLA and earned a Ph.D., as UCLA’s institutional reporting confirms. Those are separate biographies: Bialik’s real credentials do not establish Amy’s fictional alma mater. UCLA

How certain are the school claims?
The character-by-character list is a useful account of schools commonly associated with the main cast, but the reviewed sources are secondary summaries rather than primary episode records. The Television Academy overview helps clarify characters’ occupations and Caltech workplace roles; it does not verify every past university. Sheldon’s undergraduate route is especially unresolved, and the available material does not justify presenting a definitive school as settled canon. No episode transcript or official character biography in the reviewed sources conclusively resolves that question.
