In May 2015, former The Block contestants Matt and Kim Di Costa helped organise a rapid volunteer renovation of Deb and Peter Butler’s home in Seville Grove, Perth. PerthNow reported that dozens of companies and hundreds of volunteers completed the work in under four days, aiming to bring joy to a family whose three children were receiving treatment for haemophilia.
Why the Butler family received help
PerthNow’s report, published on 26 May 2015, said Deb and Peter Butler had spent half of the preceding year in hospital. Three of their five children were receiving treatment for haemophilia, which the article described as an incurable bleeding disorder. Those medical and family details are reported as they stood in 2015; the story does not establish the family’s circumstances today.
A hospital staff member contacted Matt and Kim Di Costa, who had appeared on The Block. Matt said the family of seven needed more individual spaces for the children. The project was intended to bring joy to the family, as well as improve their home.
How the renovation came together
The Di Costas helped rally a group involving dozens of companies and hundreds of volunteers. According to PerthNow, the renovation was completed in under four days. The report conveys the scale and speed of the effort but does not detail every task, name all participating companies, or give a fundraising total.
Kim Di Costa described the activity on site: “It was just like ants on an ant hill, with everyone running around doing their bits,” she said.
Other familiar faces joined the effort
PerthNow reported that Blake Garvey, from The Bachelor, and Nova presenter Nathan Morris joined the workers. The story also said Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis invited the family to attend an Eagles training session. It does not establish any continuing relationship between the family and these participants.

What Matt Di Costa said about the home
Matt explained why the layout mattered to a household with five children: “Home is really important to them and when we came here, we realised pretty quickly that with a family of seven, there wasn’t enough individual spaces for the kids.”
The account presents the renovation as a community response to the family’s circumstances and need for more individual space. It does not describe the home’s present condition or what happened to the family after the report was published.
