The 2024 Academy Museum Gala’s standout red-carpet looks ranged from contemporary designer dressing to vintage and archival couture. Among the most memorable: Kaia Gerber in a Givenchy gown with a connection to Audrey Hepburn’s My Fair Lady wardrobe, Ariana Grande in a 1963 Balmain, and Kim Kardashian in an archival Thierry Mugler ensemble.
What was the 2024 Academy Museum Gala?
The fourth annual Academy Museum Gala took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on October 19, 2024. The event honored Rita Moreno, Paul Mescal, and Quentin Tarantino and raised money for the museum’s exhibitions, education initiatives, and public programming. The museum’s incoming director and president, Amy Homma, described the gala as celebrating “the power, global impact, and indelible importance of cinema,” in an Associated Press report published June 10, 2024 (Associated Press).
Standout looks from the red carpet
These picks are editorial selections, not an official gala award. The strongest thread running through the carpet was the interplay of current designer work and garments with a longer fashion or film history.
Kaia Gerber in vintage Givenchy Couture
Gerber wore a vintage Givenchy Couture gown from Alexander McQueen’s 1997 collection. Marie Claire connected the look to the embassy-ball gown Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1964 film My Fair Lady—a particularly apt reference at an event celebrating cinema.

Ariana Grande in a 1963 Balmain
Grande chose a strapless, polka-dot vintage Balmain gown from the house’s 1963 collection. A black ribbon belt and bow gave the archival dress a crisp, graphic finish.
Kim Kardashian in archival Thierry Mugler
Kardashian wore a look from Mugler’s 1998 “Jeu de Paume” collection: a white playsuit under a long white coat, with a cinched waist and sculptural accents at the hips. The sharply constructed silhouette stood out against the carpet’s gowns.
Kylie Jenner in vintage Mugler
Jenner also turned to the designer’s archive, wearing a vintage Thierry Mugler gown dated circa Spring 1998. The two Mugler appearances showed different ways to make the house’s late-1990s fashion history feel present on the same carpet.
Rooney Mara in John Galliano-era Givenchy
Mara wore a Givenchy gown from John Galliano’s Fall 1996 couture collection, with an empire waist and floral embellishments. The collection contained 44 looks, according to Marie Claire, which also credits it with helping bring the empire-waist silhouette back.

More designer contrasts
The wider red-carpet galleries recorded a mix of current and archival names. Ayo Edebiri wore Thom Browne couture, while Greta Lee and Meg Ryan wore Loewe. Vogue also identified Zoë Saldaña in Harris Reed, Margaret Qualley in Chanel, Demi Moore in Prada, and Colman Domingo in Valentino. ELLE’s gallery identified Selena Gomez in Alaïa, Da’Vine Joy Randolph in Louis Vuitton, and Sofia Richie in Fendi with an Ahikozao bag.
Mindy Kaling in vintage Versace
Kaling wore a vintage Versace dress with Effy jewelry, another example of archival fashion sharing the carpet with contemporary designer looks.

Why the archival looks resonated
The vintage and archive choices offered more than a change of date on a garment label. Gerber’s Givenchy carried a direct link to a famous film costume; Grande’s Balmain made the provenance legible through its polka dots and bow; and Kardashian’s Mugler emphasized sculptural construction. Those connections gave the looks an added layer of meaning at a museum gala devoted to cinema.
For this selection, “standout” means a look that reads clearly in the available red-carpet coverage and has a notable silhouette, surface detail, designer provenance, or relationship to fashion and film history. It is a way to compare appearances, not an official scoring system.
