The films behind this headline are almost certainly 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). Danny Boyle’s original is widely regarded as a landmark of modern zombie and outbreak horror, while Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s sequel expands the story into a larger, harsher military thriller.
There is one important correction: Netflix availability depends on country and date. In the United States, the latest available listings checked on July 30–31, 2026 did not show either original film as a Netflix subscription title. The newer 28 Years Later films were the entries listed on Netflix.

Which two movies does the headline mean?
The “best zombie movie” is 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. The “underappreciated sequel” is 28 Weeks Later, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

Why 28 Days Later remains a landmark
28 Days Later helped popularize a faster, more frantic form of outbreak horror. Its opening image of Jim waking in an apparently deserted London immediately creates a powerful sense of isolation and social collapse.
The film’s strength is not only its infected. Jim’s journey with Selena, Frank, and Hannah gives the story an emotional center, while the danger gradually shifts from an impersonal epidemic to the moral compromises made by survivors and institutions. Themes of loneliness, militarization, fear, and human cruelty give the film more weight than a straightforward chase movie.

Its rough digital-video aesthetic also contributes to the urgency. The unstable, documentary-like images make the abandoned streets and sudden attacks feel immediate rather than polished. Critics and genre publications have credited the film with helping revitalize mainstream zombie and post-apocalyptic horror, although “the best” remains an informed critical judgment rather than an objective measurement. Parade’s horror ranking, for example, places it among the genre’s major films.

The sequel does not simply repeat the original’s small-group survival story. It moves into a militarized resettlement zone in London, where authorities are attempting to restart society after the first outbreak. That shift gives the film a broader political and institutional focus: quarantine, population control, military occupation, and the danger of believing an outbreak has been contained.

Its most effective sequences turn apparent safety into panic with startling speed. The film is particularly strong when showing how a controlled environment can fail from within, and its larger scale allows for more visceral action and wider destruction.
28 Weeks Later is also more fragmented and ensemble-driven than its predecessor. That can make it feel less intimate, and its character development is uneven. Its more conventional action-horror presentation may also disappoint viewers who prefer the quiet dread and emotional focus of 28 Days Later. Those differences help explain both the sequel’s mixed reputation and its underappreciated status.
For viewers willing to accept a louder, faster, more militarized follow-up, it is a strong continuation rather than an optional afterthought.

For U.S. viewers, the cited listings showed 28 Days Later with rental signals around $3.99 and 28 Weeks Later around $2.99, but those prices are temporary observations, not guaranteed terms. The first two films make a satisfying pair. The newer movies move the franchise forward by decades and introduce a new narrative period, so they are follow-ups rather than replacements for the original films.

Start with 28 Days Later for the foundational experience, then watch 28 Weeks Later immediately afterward. The original is more intimate and atmospheric; the sequel is broader, more political, and more action-driven. In the U.S., neither original was listed on Netflix in the latest available checks, but both remained accessible through rental, purchase, or alternative streaming listings. Netflix’s current relevance there is primarily the newer 28 Years Later films.
