The Best The Who Documentaries and Films to Watch After Pete Townshend: Behind Blue Eyes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you watch after Pete Townshend: Behind Blue Eyes? Choose Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who for the broadest account of the band, The Kids Are Alright for performances and archival footage, Lambert & Stamp for the managers who helped shape The Who, and Sensation: The Story of Tommy for the making and legacy of the album. If you want fiction rather than documentary, watch Tommy (1975) or Quadrophenia as dramatic adaptations of Pete Townshend’s rock operas.

Behind Blue Eyes is a 102-minute documentary centered particularly on Townshend’s Lifehouse project and the transitional years after Tommy in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It premiered at Telluride in September 2026, with later festival screenings announced for Mill Valley and Hamptons. The announcement confirms festivals, not a home-video or streaming release, so check a current distributor or platform listing before assuming you can watch it at home.

Start with the question the new film leaves you asking

Behind Blue Eyes is not presented as a complete, evenly weighted history of The Who. Its emphasis on Lifehouse and the years following Tommy makes it a particularly useful starting point for understanding Townshend as a composer, conceptual thinker and sometimes embattled member of a volatile band. Pete Townshend’s official announcement says he sat for a seven-hour interview with Cassidy Hartmann, providing the backbone of the documentary. That structure points toward an intimate, subject-led film rather than a conventional chronological survey.

The best follow-up therefore depends on what you want to add. A viewer who wants the missing band-wide chronology should move to Amazing Journey. Someone who wants to see The Who performing, rather than discussing its history, should choose The Kids Are Alright. If the question is how two managers found and developed the group, Lambert & Stamp is the focused answer. If Behind Blue Eyes leaves you thinking about the creation of Tommy, choose Sensation. The two narrative films belong on a separate branch because they dramatize Townshend’s operas instead of documenting the band.

1. Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who — the broadest documentary follow-up

What it covers

Amazing Journey is the strongest choice when you want to place Townshend’s Lifehouse period inside the band’s larger arc. Universal Pictures At Home credits Murray Lerner and Paul Crowder as directors and classifies the title as documentary/performance. The Who’s official description presents it as a two-film set covering the group’s 40-year journey, with interviews involving Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon, rare concert footage and member-focused sections. Six short films expand the main program rather than replacing it.

That combination matters after Behind Blue Eyes. The newer film’s concentration on Townshend can leave the other members’ roles in the background; Amazing Journey deliberately widens the frame. Daltrey’s approach to performance, Entwistle’s musicianship and Moon’s presence are treated as parts of a band history rather than as footnotes to Townshend’s songwriting. The result is the most practical bridge from a Townshend-centered film to a group-centered understanding of The Who.

Why choose it next

Choose this title if your next questions are chronological: How did the early group become a major live act? How did its members’ personalities affect the music? Where do the major albums and turning points sit in relation to Lifehouse? Its long running time allows more context than a short profile, while the performance material keeps the account from becoming a sequence of talking heads.

The official page reproduces a promotional testimonial from Mark Blake of Q magazine calling it “a new benchmark in music documentaries.” That is marketing copy reproduced by the band’s site, not an independently verified consensus, so treat it as a description of the film’s positioning rather than a measurable ranking.

Format and buying notes

The listed runtime is 2 hours 1 minute. The Who’s page describes a DVD collection and links to US and UK Amazon storefronts, while Universal confirms a DVD format. Regional editions, stock and bonus contents can change, so verify the precise listing for your country. The natural physical-media search is Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who DVD.

2. The Kids Are Alright — the performance and archive choice

What it covers

The Kids Are Alright is built around seeing and hearing The Who. The band’s official description calls it a 100-minute documentary assembled non-chronologically from live and lip-synched footage, with interviews reaching back to 1964 and ending with a 1978 performance. Its structure is deliberately less like a textbook timeline and more like an audiovisual portrait assembled from appearances, interviews and stage moments.

That approach supplies something a subject-led interview film cannot: evidence of how the group looked, moved and sounded across changing eras. You can compare the early footage with later performances without asking the film to explain every transition in order. The non-chronological arrangement is a feature for viewers who want momentum and a limitation for anyone seeking a clean year-by-year account; Amazing Journey is the better companion for the latter.

Why choose it next

Pick this film when your main wish is more music. It is especially useful after a documentary focused on Townshend’s ideas because the performances restore the physical scale of The Who: Daltrey’s frontman presence, Townshend’s playing and stage movement, Entwistle’s role in the ensemble and Moon’s drumming are encountered as filmed events rather than retrospective claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The archive also lets you see why a band history cannot be reduced to its studio albums. Lip-synched television appearances and concert footage document different performance contexts, so do not read every sequence as evidence of the same kind of live recording. The film’s value is the range of material and the contrast between contexts.

Format and buying notes

The official page lists US and UK DVD editions, release and re-release information, and bonus material including a Roger Daltrey question-and-answer feature titled “Behind Blue Eyes.” Inventory and edition details are regional and can change. If you are looking for physical media, the clearest search phrase is The Kids Are Alright DVD; check whether a listing is the edition with the bonus material you want.

3. Lambert & Stamp — the managers’ story

What it covers

Lambert & Stamp narrows the subject from the whole band to Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert. The official synopsis describes their search for an underground-film subject and their eventual discovery, mentorship and management of The Who. That premise makes the film a study of the decisions that helped turn an ambitious young group into a distinct cultural and musical project.

Watching it after Behind Blue Eyes shifts the perspective away from Townshend’s inner account. Management is not a background service in this story; it is part of the creative machinery. The film asks what happens when managers treat a band as an artistic proposition, how they identify a group’s potential and how their own ambitions interact with the musicians’ ambitions.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Why choose it next

Choose this documentary if you are most interested in infrastructure: discovery, presentation, mentorship and the relationship between artists and the people representing them. It is also the best option when you want a more concentrated film rather than another broad survey. Because its subject is Stamp and Lambert, it should not be used as a substitute for a complete biography of all four musicians.

The emphasis on two managers also gives you a useful corrective to the idea that a band’s history is made only by songs and performances. Decisions about how a group is framed, where it is placed and which risks are encouraged can shape the public story as decisively as the recording itself.

Format and buying notes

The official page links to US and UK Amazon storefronts, but the cited information does not establish a particular physical edition or current inventory. Search for Lambert & Stamp documentary and confirm the region, format and subtitles before buying. No runtime is stated in the cited synopsis, so listings that show different lengths may reflect editions or bonus features.

4. Sensation: The Story of Tommy — the album-making companion

What it covers

Sensation: The Story of Tommy is the most direct follow-up when Behind Blue Eyes makes you want to understand the album that preceded the Lifehouse period. The official page describes new interviews with Townshend and Daltrey, archival interviews with John Entwistle, and contributions from engineer Bob Pridden, artwork creator Mike McInnerney and other participants. Those voices place the record between composition, recording, visual design and performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an album documentary, not a general history of The Who. Its value comes from concentration: rather than moving across the entire catalogue, it examines the background, creation and impact of Tommy. The page also lists a 33-minute 1969 Beat-Club feature as a bonus, giving the package an additional period document connected to the album’s era.

Why choose it next

Choose Sensation if your questions are about process. How did Townshend’s concept become a recording? What did the other musicians and production personnel contribute? How was the project presented visually and remembered afterward? The inclusion of engineering, artwork and archival voices makes the film more useful than a purely biographical account for viewers interested in how a major rock project is assembled.

The official page states that Tommy has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, but it does not specify the year of that sales count. Treat the figure as the page’s stated cumulative claim, not as a dated annual statistic. The film’s subject is the album’s background and legacy; it is not evidence that every later adaptation or performance had the same reception.

How it differs from the 1975 film

Sensation explains and documents the album. Ken Russell’s Tommy dramatizes it. They can be watched together, but they answer different questions: one is about authorship and production, the other about visual and narrative interpretation.

5. Tommy (1975) — the dramatic rock-opera adaptation

What it is

Tommy (1975) is Ken Russell’s dramatic adaptation of Townshend’s rock opera. It belongs in a follow-up list because it shows how the material can function as a narrative film, but it must not be mistaken for a documentary about the band. Its scenes, performances and visual choices are part of a scripted interpretation of the opera.

Why choose it next

Watch it when you want to experience the story world of Tommy rather than hear participants explain how the album was made. It is also a useful contrast with Sensation: the documentary supplies context and testimony, while Russell’s film translates the music into dramatic imagery and character action. Seeing both makes the distinction between source material and adaptation clear.

6. Quadrophenia — another narrative route into Townshend’s work

What it is

Quadrophenia is Franc Roddam’s film adaptation of Townshend’s rock opera. Like Tommy, it is a dramatic feature rather than a documentary, so its characters and narrative should not be used as straightforward historical testimony about The Who or the period it depicts.

The Who’s official page also notes that its bonus disc includes a making-of documentary. That extra material gives documentary viewers a reason to choose this title, but the feature itself remains an adaptation. If your priority is band history, select Amazing Journey or The Kids Are Alright; if your priority is seeing a rock opera turned into a story film, Quadrophenia belongs on the list.

Why choose it next

Choose it when you want to compare Townshend’s different dramatic worlds. Pairing it with Tommy lets you see two distinct adaptations rather than treating one film as a definitive visual explanation of Townshend’s writing. Pairing it with Sensation keeps the distinction between documentary evidence and fictionalized interpretation visible.

How the choices differ

If your priority is Choose first Because
A complete band-oriented overview Amazing Journey It combines long-form history, member interviews, rare concert footage and short films.
Seeing the band perform The Kids Are Alright Its core material is live and lip-synched footage spanning 1964 to 1978.
Understanding early management and discovery Lambert & Stamp It centers on Stamp and Lambert’s discovery, mentorship and management of The Who.
Understanding Tommy as a production Sensation It brings together Townshend, Daltrey, archival Entwistle material and creative collaborators.
Watching a scripted rock-opera film Tommy or Quadrophenia Both are adaptations, not documentary histories.

Three viewing paths that make sense

Path A: the full band story

  1. Start with Behind Blue Eyes for Townshend’s account of Lifehouse and the post-Tommy transition.
  2. Watch Amazing Journey to widen the story to Daltrey, Entwistle, Moon and the band’s longer arc.
  3. Finish with The Kids Are Alright to replace retrospective explanation with performance footage.

Path B: from Tommy to its interpretations

  1. Watch Sensation for the album’s creation, collaborators and legacy.
  2. Follow with Ken Russell’s Tommy to see the rock opera dramatized.
  3. Add Quadrophenia if you want a second adaptation and its making-of bonus material.

Path C: the people behind the project

  1. Use Lambert & Stamp to examine the managers’ role in discovering and shaping The Who.
  2. Move to Amazing Journey for the band-wide context that the focused managers’ story cannot provide.
  3. Use The Kids Are Alright as the performance evidence at the end of the sequence.

What is currently known about watching the new documentary at home

The September 2026 announcement for Behind Blue Eyes confirms its Telluride premiere and later Mill Valley and Hamptons festival screenings. It does not confirm a home-video edition or streaming distributor. Do not infer availability from the existence of those festival dates; check a current distributor or platform listing for your country.

The older titles have different evidence. The Who’s official pages list DVD editions for The Kids Are Alright and a DVD collection for Amazing Journey, with regional storefront links. The official Lambert & Stamp page also links to Amazon, but the specific edition and current stock are not established. Sony’s title page lists digital outlets for Tommy (1975), including Prime Video. Rights, prices, subtitles, bonus discs and inventory can change, so confirm those details at the point of purchase or rental.

Recommended order for most viewers

If you want one answer, choose Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who. It gives the broadest documented band context after a film anchored in Townshend’s perspective. Then choose according to your interest: The Kids Are Alright for performances, Lambert & Stamp for management and discovery, and Sensation for the making of Tommy. Keep Tommy and Quadrophenia in a separate dramatic-adaptation branch, where their value is imaginative interpretation rather than documentary completeness.
