Tubi is the best place to start if you want free, on-demand movies and TV from an established legal service. Choose Pluto TV for live channels, The Roku Channel for another free streaming hub, Kanopy or Hoopla if your library participates, and JustWatch to find where a particular title is available. No one legal service replicates every part of TeaTV: catalogues, device support, and viewing rights vary by title and location.
This guide is U.S.-focused. Streaming catalogues and app availability change, so check the provider’s official site for current access in your area. TeaTV’s present status is difficult to verify from authoritative sources; reports from users conflict, so it should not be described as definitively shut down.

These services solve different problems. A live-channel guide, an on-demand catalogue, library lending, a personal media server, and a streaming search engine are not interchangeable. A useful combination is Tubi for free browsing, Pluto TV for live channels, a library service for curated films, and JustWatch when you have a specific title in mind.

Tubi is the strongest general-purpose starting point for viewers who want to browse free movies and television without signing up for a conventional subscription. Tubi describes its service as free, legal, and supported by advertising; it says there is no subscription fee or credit card requirement. An account can add convenience features, but it is not required to watch its free content, according to Tubi’s help page.

The service is available on the web and a range of phones, televisions, consoles, and streaming devices; see Tubi’s current platform information for supported options. Its catalogue is a good fit for browsing older, independent, and familiar studio titles, but licensing changes over time. Do not assume a particular film, a complete series, or the newest theatrical release will be there. Free also means ad-supported: Tubi says advertising helps pay for the content.
Choose Tubi if you want to open an app and browse free on-demand entertainment. Look elsewhere or supplement it when you want ad-free viewing, a specific current release, or a title that is not licensed in your region.
2. Pluto TV: best for live channels
Pluto TV combines live, scheduled channels with on-demand movies and television. It suits viewers who liked browsing without deciding on a particular title, or who want news, reality programming, and background viewing. Pluto’s official availability page lists web, mobile, desktop, smart-TV, and streaming-device access.

The trade-off is the format: a live channel runs on a schedule, so you may not be able to start a particular program whenever you like. Its on-demand section is a separate option, not a promise of a complete or current catalogue. Access, channels, and titles can vary by location, and the service is ad-supported.
Choose Pluto TV if you want free live television or casual channel surfing. For a specific movie or episode, search its on-demand section or use JustWatch to check other legal providers.
3. The Roku Channel: best as a free-TV hub
The Roku Channel offers free movies, shows, and live channels. It is not limited to Roku hardware: Roku says it can be watched on its website and mobile app, and installed on Roku devices, compatible Samsung TVs, and compatible Amazon Fire TV devices. Check Roku’s support information for details.

Availability depends on region and compatible device or model. The catalogue may differ between locations and platforms, and the interface can include paid rentals, purchases, or premium subscriptions alongside free material. Confirm that a title is actually free to watch before selecting it.
Choose The Roku Channel if it is supported where you live and you want a broad, free streaming hub—particularly on Roku or a compatible Fire TV or Samsung TV.
4. Plex: best for personal media plus free streaming
Plex combines a catalogue of licensed streaming content with tools for organizing and playing your own media. The streaming catalogue can provide a free option; the personal-library side is useful if you already have films or shows you are entitled to keep and play, but it takes more setup than opening Tubi or Pluto TV.
Plex distinguishes its licensed streaming service from users’ personal libraries. As Plex explains, users are responsible for having the rights to media they add to their own libraries. Plex is therefore not a way to turn an unauthorized stream or copy into lawful content, nor does its free catalogue guarantee that a particular title is available.
Choose Plex if you want one interface for legitimate free streaming and your own properly sourced media. If you only want a quick, no-setup browse, start with Tubi or Pluto TV instead.

If you have access through a participating public library or university, Kanopy and Hoopla can complement ad-supported streaming with titles available through institutional access. Kanopy
Kanopy is a library- or university-supported service commonly used for films, documentaries, independent cinema, and educational content. Access is not universal: your institution must participate, and its rules can determine what you can watch and how often. Check Kanopy and your library for current eligibility, catalogue, and viewing limits. It is a better match for curated and often ad-free viewing than for replacing a broad, current television catalogue.
Hoopla
Hoopla may let eligible library members borrow video alongside ebooks, audiobooks, comics, and music. Your library must participate, and available titles and borrowing limits depend on its arrangements. Check your library’s information rather than assuming a universal monthly limit or catalogue. Hoopla can be a useful addition to free commercial streaming, but it is not a guaranteed, always-available replacement for it.
6. JustWatch: best for finding a particular film or show
JustWatch is a discovery tool, not a video host. Its U.S. guide searches where movies and shows are offered across streaming services, including free-with-ads, subscription, rental, and purchase options. That makes it useful when you already know what you want to watch and would rather check legal availability than search each app in turn. Start at JustWatch’s U.S. site.

- Check that the result applies to your country and note whether it requires a library login or paid access.
- Open the provider’s official app or website to confirm the offer and play the title.
- If it does not play, check again: rights and listings can change, and search results are not permanent guarantees.
A single title can move between services or appear under different access models. For example, a JustWatch listing for I Saw the TV Glow has shown a mix of library, free-with-ads, and rental options. Treat such listings as title- and date-specific, not a promise about what will be available next time you search.
When free services do not have the title
There is no legitimate free service that can promise every movie and episode in one place. Rights are divided among providers, vary by country, and change over time. Current films and premium series commonly require a subscription, rental, purchase, or authorized promotional access. If you want one new release, a one-time rental or purchase may be more practical than subscribing to another service indefinitely; if you want a premium catalogue, compare the relevant paid services’ current offers directly rather than assuming a particular price.
Some TV apps also require an existing cable or satellite subscription. Roku notes that authenticated provider apps may require a qualifying subscription and may not include every season or episode; see its guidance on cable and satellite content. Check access requirements before relying on an app as a replacement.

Are TeaTV-style APKs safe?
No blanket safety guarantee is possible for an unofficial streaming APK. Files from unverified download sites can carry malware, use deceptive download buttons or redirects, collect data without clear practices, or stop working without warning. A stream being easy to find does not establish that it is licensed. This guide does not recommend piracy-oriented apps or provide sideloading instructions.
Use official app stores and provider websites, and do not disable device security protections to install an unknown streaming app. Roku says it may remove apps that violate platform terms and takes reports of piracy or unlawful activity seriously (Roku support). - I have a participating library or university account: Check Kanopy for curated films and documentaries, and Hoopla for borrowing across media types.
- I know the exact movie or series I want: Search JustWatch, then confirm availability with the provider.
- I want a current release that is not free: Compare a legitimate rental, purchase, or paid subscription.
- I do not want ads: Look at eligible library services, a paid service, or library DVDs and Blu-rays; Tubi, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel use advertising for their free offerings.
