If you want one place to start, try The Pitt for an urgent, character-driven medical drama. For a different mood, the strongest 2025 choices include The White Lotus season 3, The Last of Us season 2, and The Righteous Gemstones. These are recommendations across distinct genres, not a definitive ranking: the available evidence supports a representative shortlist rather than a universal “best” list. Streaming catalogs change, so check the title and season in your local HBO Max listing before you settle in.
How to choose among the 2025 picks
“Best” depends on what you want to watch. This shortlist favors distinct premises, critical recognition where documented, and variety in tone. The shows are not ranked against one another: a medical drama, resort satire, post-apocalyptic story, and broad comedy answer different viewing needs.
| Show | 2025 connection | Best fit | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Pitt | Included in Esquire’s 2025 selection of HBO and Max series | Viewers seeking a high-stakes medical drama | Urgent and character-driven |
| The White Lotus | Season 3 is the 2025 installment | Viewers drawn to ensemble stories and social satire | Darkly comic |
| The Last of Us | Season 2 is the 2025 installment | Viewers who want serialized survival drama | Tense and post-apocalyptic |
| The Righteous Gemstones | Include it as a 2025 pick only for its 2025 season | Viewers who prefer irreverent family comedy | Broad and satirical |
For a documentary-focused viewer, these are scripted series rather than documentaries. They may still suit a night when you want character, setting, and subject matter instead of nonfiction reporting.
Best 2025 HBO Max shows by mood
The Pitt: a high-pressure medical drama
Start here if you want an intense workplace story built around medical crises and the people responding to them. Esquire included The Pitt in its 2025 selection of the best HBO and Max series. That is one publication’s editorial judgment, not an objective ranking or proof of a broader consensus.

The White Lotus season 3: resort-set social satire
Choose this for an ensemble and a setting where status, money, and interpersonal tension can drive the story. HBO describes The White Lotus as following guests and employees through one tumultuous week at an exclusive resort. That premise makes it a natural pick for dark social satire, but the official series description does not establish season 3’s current availability in every market. Check your local listing.
If you enjoy the show’s resort atmosphere, HBO Shop lists The White Lotus Official Cocktail Collection: Sunset in Paradise, a 144-page hardcover by Sarah Gualtieri with 60 recipes, on sale January 14, 2025. It is an optional themed companion, not something needed to watch the series.

The Last of Us season 2: serialized survival drama
Pick this if you want a tense, continuing story set after a pandemic. HBO’s series description centers on a hardened survivor and a 14-year-old girl who may be humanity’s last hope. That describes the franchise premise; it does not confirm that season 2 is currently included in HBO Max’s catalog where you live. Verify the season itself before starting.
The Righteous Gemstones: irreverent family comedy
For a comic change of pace, HBO describes The Righteous Gemstones as following the eldest child of a celebrity televangelist family behind a big-money megachurch. Its broad family satire is the comedy option in this group. Because the series spans more than one season, make sure the season you choose is the 2025 installment if you are specifically looking for shows from that year.

Check availability before you commit
HBO’s general help guidance says most new HBO shows and movies become available on Max when they air on HBO, but that is not a title-by-title promise that every season remains in the catalog. Rights and catalogs can vary by region and change over time. HBO’s help page recommends using the service to find programming; search your local listing for the exact show and season before planning a watch.
