Netflix’s The Witcher changes some characters’ fates for adaptation-specific story reasons, according to showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Eskel’s Season 2 death was meant to make Kaer Morhen feel dangerous and give Geralt urgency to understand Ciri’s power. For Season 4, Hissrich described death as a source of grief and trauma that changes the survivors. Those explanations apply to the examples discussed—not automatically to every departure from the books.
Why change a character’s fate in an adaptation?
Hissrich has described adaptation as a process of changing how the source story is presented. Some characters may need to appear earlier to set events in motion; others may not appear at all. She told Netflix: “Obviously, it’s an adaptation, so there are things that we have to change, there are characters that we can’t meet, or characters that we must meet earlier in order to sort of set up the right dominoes.”
That general approach helps explain why the Netflix series is not a scene-by-scene reproduction of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books. It does not, by itself, explain the purpose behind every altered fate. The specific reasons Hissrich has given vary by character and season.
Why does Eskel die in Season 2?
Netflix’s recap of the Season 2 aftershow says the show considered introducing a new witcher to die, but the creative team felt viewers would have less attachment to an unfamiliar character. The choice to kill Eskel instead was intended to make the threat at Kaer Morhen feel immediate and to push Geralt to investigate Ciri’s power quickly, so he could protect her and the other witchers.
In this case, the death serves the story’s sense of danger and Geralt’s motivation. It is a specific explanation for Eskel’s fate, not a universal formula for every character the series changes.
What do the Season 4 deaths mean for the survivors?
GamesRadar+ reports that Vesemir dies at Vilgefortz’s hand during the Battle of Montecalvo, and that Istredd sacrifices himself at Stygga Castle. Asked about deaths that differ from the books, Hissrich emphasized their consequences for the people left behind: “One of the things that our characters have to deal with is the trauma of losing someone and how that changes who you are and how you view the world,” she told GamesRadar+.

That explanation focuses on grief as a force that alters surviving characters, rather than on death as spectacle alone. Hissrich also said, “We’ve had some controversy with characters that we have killed off before, that aren’t killed in the books. Yet we always do it for a reason.” Her comment conveys her stated intent; it does not establish the motive for every individual change.

It helps to keep screen canon and book canon distinct. A character’s fate in the Netflix series is an adaptation choice; it does not rewrite what happens in Sapkowski’s novels. When comparing a particular character, consider what happens in each version, what story function the show’s creators have identified, and how the event affects the survivors. If no specific explanation has been reported, the reason should be treated as unknown rather than inferred.
