This is a September 2024 U.S. Hulu guide, not a live catalog update. If you want one place to start, watch FX’s Shōgun: it is the strongest overall choice for ambitious historical drama, political intrigue, and cinematic storytelling. For a more contemporary, character-driven series, choose The Bear. For comedy, start Only Murders in the Building from Season 1.
The list below separates the best established Hulu and FX-on-Hulu series from the September premieres that were shaping the service’s conversation that month. Hulu’s catalog, licensing, and episode availability can change, so confirm that a title is still available in your U.S. plan before starting.
Quick guide: which Hulu show should you watch?
| Rank | Show | Best for | What to know first |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shōgun | Historical drama and political intrigue | Violent, serious, and mature; Hulu also offered an English-dub collection during this period. |
| 2 | The Bear | Intense workplace drama and exceptional ensemble acting | Food, family trauma, and restaurant pressure make this compelling but rarely relaxing. |
| 3 | Only Murders in the Building | Comedy-mystery and true-crime satire | Season 4 premiered on August 27, 2024, but the story is best watched from Season 1. |
| 4 | Reservation Dogs | Bittersweet coming-of-age dramedy | Its humor shares space with grief, family history, and trauma. |
| 5 | The Handmaid’s Tale | Dystopian and political drama | Sexual violence, coercion, reproductive oppression, and torture are central content concerns. |
| 6 | Tell Me Lies Season 2 | Messy, manipulative relationship drama | A September 2024 weekly-release pick rather than a completed prestige binge. |
| 7 | How to Die Alone | Hopeful character-driven comedy | Despite its title, it is primarily about self-acceptance and reclaiming your life. |
| 8 | The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives | Influencer-focused reality television | Hulu’s premise centers on a public “soft-swinging” scandal; treat the synopsis as the description of the show’s setup, not independent verification of every allegation. |
The best ongoing shows on Hulu in September 2024
1. Shōgun — best overall prestige drama
FX’s 2024 adaptation of Shōgun is the clearest recommendation for viewers who want a serious, richly made drama. Set in Japan during political upheaval and civil conflict, it follows intersecting struggles for power, survival, and loyalty rather than treating its samurai setting as simple adventure scenery.
The series is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, but you do not need to read the book first. The show stands on its own as a tense historical drama, with political maneuvering and cultural misunderstandings carrying as much weight as the battlefield violence. Hulu classified it as a TV-MA drama/action-and-adventure series and also provided an English-dub collection during this period for viewers who preferred that option.

Watch it if: you like historical fiction, court politics, samurai stories, morally complicated alliances, and prestige television with a deliberate pace.
Content note: warfare, graphic violence, political manipulation, and other mature themes are fundamental to the story. This is not light background viewing.
Want the source material after watching the series? the book behind FX’s Shōgun is James Clavell’s original novel, a natural companion read rather than a prerequisite.
2. The Bear — best character-driven drama-comedy
The Bear turns the pressure of running a restaurant into a story about grief, family, ambition, and the fragile bonds of a workplace. Carmy and his crew pursue culinary excellence while trying to keep the restaurant—and one another—from falling apart.
FX’s series works because its restaurant setting is more than a backdrop. Every service becomes a test of communication, control, trust, and whether people can build something better without repeating the damage that brought them there. The food culture attracts viewers, but the family drama and ensemble performances are what make the show difficult to stop watching.
Season 3 premiered in June 2024, making the series a particularly timely established recommendation for September viewers. It is a good choice if you want something that can be funny in one scene and emotionally bruising in the next.
Watch it if: you enjoy high-pressure workplaces, complicated family relationships, emotionally intense ensemble acting, and stories about trying to make a difficult institution function.
Content note: The Bear is TV-MA and can be abrasive by design. The shouting, panic, grief, and relentless pace are part of its appeal, but they also make it a poor choice when you want a calming binge.
3. Only Murders in the Building — best comedy-mystery
Three true-crime-obsessed neighbors—Mabel, Charles, and Oliver—become involved in murders connected to their apartment building in Hulu’s comedy-mystery series. The appeal is the combination of a continuing whodunit, comic timing, celebrity casting, and the eccentric social world of the building itself.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Season 4 premiered on August 27, 2024, putting new episodes directly in the September viewing window. That makes it one of the month’s strongest “watch now” recommendations, although the season was still unfolding rather than complete.
Start with Season 1 if you have not watched the show before. Later mysteries build on character relationships, running jokes, and earlier revelations, so beginning with the newest season can make the emotional and investigative threads harder to follow.
Watch it if: you want a cozy mystery with serialized plotting, a recognizable cast, and a playful take on true-crime obsession.

Co-created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, Reservation Dogs follows four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma. Its half-hour episodes combine comedy with coming-of-age storytelling, community life, family history, and the experience of living with grief.
The show’s distinctive voice comes from placing Indigenous characters, creators, and perspectives at the center rather than treating them as an occasional theme. Its humor can be warm, strange, irreverent, and immediately followed by something painful or profound. That tonal range is why it belongs on this list even for viewers who are not normally looking for a conventional sitcom.
Watch it if: you want an original ensemble dramedy, a coming-of-age story with emotional weight, or a series that balances community and loss without flattening either into a lesson.
Content note: the show deals with grief and trauma alongside its comedy. Calling it simply a teen comedy undersells what it is.

5. The Handmaid’s Tale — best dystopian drama
The Handmaid’s Tale depicts a woman forced into sexual servitude in Gilead, a totalitarian society formed in what was formerly the United States. Hulu’s series is adapted from Margaret Atwood’s classic novel and remains one of the service’s defining political and literary dramas.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
It is a strong fit for viewers who want resistance narratives, dystopian fiction, political power struggles, and heavily serialized storytelling. The series asks what happens when a government turns reproductive control, religious extremism, and surveillance into the operating system of everyday life.
Watch it if: you want a dark literary adaptation with a sustained political premise and morally difficult choices.
Content warning: sexual violence, coercion, reproductive oppression, torture, and other disturbing material are not incidental to the premise. Viewers sensitive to those subjects should read a fuller content advisory before beginning.
Readers interested in the source text can also read Margaret Atwood’s original novel before or after the series. The book is useful context, but it is not required to follow the television adaptation.
The September 2024 Hulu premieres worth watching
6. Tell Me Lies Season 2 — best toxic-relationship drama
Tell Me Lies returned for Season 2 in September 2024, making it one of Hulu’s headline new-season picks for the month. The college-set drama follows a relationship shaped by manipulation, secrets, attraction, and consequences that continue long after the characters should know better.
This is the right recommendation for viewers who want a messy, bingeable relationship story rather than a morally reassuring romance. The series is built around emotional damage and unreliable behavior, so its appeal is closer to watching a bad decision compound than to watching an aspirational love story.
Season 2 was especially suitable for viewers following a weekly release during September. If you prefer completed seasons and clean resolutions, save it for later; if you enjoy discussing each new betrayal as it arrives, it was one of the month’s most obvious conversation shows.
Watch it if: you like college dramas, toxic romance, secrets, unreliable relationships, and serialized conflict.
Set expectations: “best” here means the strongest fit for the toxic-romance audience, not a claim that the show has the broad critical stature of Shōgun or The Bear.

7. How to Die Alone — best new warm dramedy
Created, executive-produced, and led by Natasha Rothwell, How to Die Alone premiered on Hulu on September 13, 2024. The story centers on an airport employee whose experiences force her to confront fear, loneliness, and the ways she has postponed living.
The title sounds bleak, but the series is better understood as a dramedy about self-acceptance and reinvention. Its workplace setting gives the show room for comic situations, while the central character’s emotional growth provides a more hopeful alternative to Hulu’s darker September dramas.

Watch it if: you want a character-led comedy about starting over, a distinctive creator-star voice, or an emotionally generous workplace story.
This is the pick to choose after a difficult day when you still want something with substance but do not want another story about institutional cruelty, murder, or romantic manipulation.
8. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives — best reality-TV conversation starter
Hulu’s reality series follows Mormon mom influencers whose sisterhood is destabilized by a public “soft-swinging” scandal. The show places faith, friendship, reputation, and online fame in direct conflict, giving viewers an unscripted counterpart to the season’s scripted relationship dramas.
It premiered on September 6, 2024, and quickly fit the social-media-driven reality television conversation of the month. The appeal is not documentary-style investigation; it is the collision between influencer branding and private interpersonal conflict when both are made public.

Two things to know before you press play
Not every recommendation is a Hulu Original
This list includes Hulu originals as well as FX series distributed through Hulu. Shōgun and The Bear, for example, are FX titles available through the Hulu ecosystem; they should not all be described as Hulu Originals. Branding and availability may also differ by plan, bundle, and location.
“Right now” means September 2024 here
The September frame matters. Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Tell Me Lies Season 2, How to Die Alone, and The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives were timely because of their 2024 release windows. A later reader may find a different episode count, licensing arrangement, or catalog status. This article does not claim that all eight titles remain on Hulu after September 2024.

Is this a current list of Hulu shows?
No. It is deliberately framed around the U.S. Hulu catalog and release schedule in September 2024. Hulu availability, licensing, and episode counts can change, so later readers should verify each title in their own catalog.
Are all of these shows Hulu Originals?
No. The list combines Hulu programming with FX series distributed through Hulu, including Shōgun and The Bear. Calling every title a Hulu Original would be inaccurate.
What should I watch first if I have not seen any of them?
Start with Shōgun for the strongest overall prestige-drama recommendation. Choose The Bear for a contemporary character drama or Only Murders in the Building if you want comedy and mystery.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I start Only Murders in the Building with Season 4?
You can, but Season 1 is the better entry point. The mysteries, relationships, and recurring jokes build across the series, and Season 4 was still releasing new episodes during September 2024.
The Bottom Line
Start with Shōgun if you want one best answer. Choose The Bear for intense character drama, Only Murders in the Building for a lighter mystery, Reservation Dogs for a distinctive dramedy, and How to Die Alone for the month’s warmest new option. The remaining picks serve more specific tastes: dystopian seriousness, toxic romance, and influencer-centered reality television.
