This US-oriented starting list pairs films such as The Adam Project with series including 3 Body Problem, Black Mirror, and Alice in Borderland. Netflix availability varies by country and changes over time, so check your local catalog before you start.
How to choose a sci-fi watch
- For one sitting: Choose a film. Netflix Tudum lists The Adam Project at 1 hour 46 minutes and Bird Box at 2 hours 4 minutes.
- For a longer commitment: Choose a series, but check its Netflix page for the season and episode details available to you. The cited guides do not provide total series runtimes.
- For a particular mood: Netflix’s own guides span space adventure, psychological thriller, horror, comedy, drama, and animation. The picks below lean into different parts of that range.
These are editorial recommendations, not an objective ranking. Netflix’s guides and catalog pages are useful starting points, but the cited catalog pages are US-facing and do not establish availability worldwide. Netflix Tudum’s sci-fi movie guide and its sci-fi show guide describe the genre’s range.
Sci-fi movies for a single-night watch
The Adam Project (2022)
A fit for viewers looking for an accessible, high-concept adventure rather than a long series commitment. Netflix Tudum lists the film as 1 hour 46 minutes and PG-13. Netflix’s US sci-fi movie catalog also lists it; that does not guarantee it is available in other countries or will remain in the catalog. See Netflix Tudum’s movie guide or check Netflix’s US sci-fi movies catalog.
Bird Box (2018)
For a darker, more tense choice, Bird Box is listed in Netflix Tudum’s sci-fi movie guide at 2 hours 4 minutes and rated R. Its rating and premise make it a more intense alternative to an adventure-oriented pick. Check the guide for Netflix’s listing and verify the film’s availability in your own catalog.

Sci-fi series for a longer watch
3 Body Problem
Start here if you want a sci-fi drama built around a large-scale speculative premise. Netflix Tudum’s 2026 show guide begins its list with 3 Body Problem, and Netflix’s US sci-fi show catalog includes it. The cited information does not specify episode counts or total runtime, so use Netflix’s title page to see what is available and how much viewing time to expect. Read Netflix Tudum’s sci-fi shows guide or check Netflix’s US sci-fi shows catalog.
Black Mirror
Choose Black Mirror for psychological sci-fi and unsettling speculative stories rather than one continuous adventure. Netflix Tudum names it as an example of the variety in sci-fi television, and it appears in Netflix’s US sci-fi shows catalog. Check the title page for the seasons available in your region. See Tudum’s show guide.

Alice in Borderland
For a more thriller-leaning series, consider Alice in Borderland. Netflix Tudum includes it among its sci-fi show examples, and the US sci-fi catalog lists it as well. The sources establish it as a candidate, not a promise of access in every country. See Netflix Tudum’s show guide.

The catalog references here are Netflix’s US pages, not a worldwide rights list. A title shown there may not appear in your local Netflix catalog, and catalog selection can change. Search Netflix in your country close to the time you plan to watch; for the most current check, open the title’s page in your account and confirm it is playable.
