1. Disobedience (2017/2018)
Best for: viewers who want the most substantial and emotionally conflicted romance on this list.
Sebastián Lelio’s Disobedience follows Ronit, a photographer who returns to the Orthodox Jewish community that rejected her after the death of her father. Her return brings her back into contact with Esti, a childhood friend whose marriage and religious commitments complicate the feelings between them.
The film’s central conflict is not simply whether two people are attracted to each other. It asks what love costs when it collides with faith, family history, marriage, sexual identity, and the expectations of a close-knit community. That genre label matters. Addicted is not an idealized love story about two people overcoming obstacles together. Its tension comes from secrecy, betrayal, sexual compulsion, and the damage those forces can do to an established relationship. The erotic material is central to the premise, but so are the consequences of treating a private problem as something that can remain hidden indefinitely.
