This curated selection brings together striking views of the corona, images that show the eclipse unfolding, scenes of people watching, and a perspective from space. The total eclipse crossed North America on April 8, 2024, with its path running from Mazatlán, Mexico, to Newfoundland, according to the Associated Press.
Close views of totality
During totality, the Moon blocks the bright disk of the Sun, revealing the corona—the Sun’s outer atmosphere—as a feathery white halo. NASA describes this appearance in its account of eclipse photography and observation.
- Indianapolis Motor Speedway — Joel Kowsky, NASA. A close view of the eclipsed Sun made at the speedway in Indianapolis. NASA selected Kowsky’s photograph among its best images of 2024; the page was published January 2, 2025. View the NASA photograph and credit.
- Kerrville, Texas — Kat Troche, NASA Scientific Visualization Studio. This image in NASA’s 2024 eclipse collection offers another ground-based view of totality. View the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Imagery collection.
See the eclipse unfold
A single frame can capture the drama of totality; a sequence shows how the Moon’s passage changes the Sun’s appearance over time. NASA’s Eclipses Gallery brings together eclipse imagery, while its April 8 eclipse coverage presents images from across the event. Gallery contents can change, so the selection may look different over time.
People and places along the path
Eclipse photography is also a record of where people gathered to watch. The Associated Press’s April 8, 2024, photo report, “AP PHOTOS: Total solar eclipse sweeps across North America,” offers news photographs from locations along the route, framing the event through its viewers and surroundings.

For a broader editorial mix, AP’s Week in Pictures for April 5–11, 2024 includes eclipse scenes. AP photo editor Anita Baca, based in Mexico City, curated that edition.
A view from space
Ground-based photographers show the eclipse from beneath the shadow; NASA’s DSCOVR EPIC gallery records it from an Earth-observing instrument. The resulting view places the event over North America rather than isolating the Sun and Moon in a camera frame. It is a distinctly different perspective, not a substitute for close-up photographs from the ground. Explore DSCOVR EPIC’s April 8, 2024, eclipse gallery.
