On April 27, 2026, American Idol Season 24’s Top 7 performed two songs apiece in an episode celebrating Taylor Swift and artists associated with California. This ranking is an editorial assessment—not an official score—based on vocal control, emotional communication, song fit, individuality, and stage presence across both rounds.
How this Top 7 ranking works
The contestants faced two very different challenges: a Taylor Swift song and a selection for the California-themed round. I weigh both performances together, looking for a compelling interpretation as well as control and presence. The judges’ reactions offer useful context, but they do not establish an objective order or explain how viewers voted.
ABC framed the episode as a live-voting night, with the results narrowing the field to five. The placements below are my assessment of the performances, not a reconstruction of the vote.
The seven contestants, ranked
1. Keyla Richardson — “Lover” and “I’d Rather Go Blind”
Keyla made the clearest case across both rounds. Her “Lover” was praised for a fresh interpretation and distinctive melodic choices; in the California round, she brought a strong crowd response to Etta James’s “I’d Rather Go Blind.” Nikki Glaser called the latter “an iconic Idol moment.” The contrast between inventive phrasing and a forceful, emotionally direct performance gave Keyla the night’s most complete pair.

2. Chris Tungseth — “Exile” and “What Was I Made For?”
Chris’s tender delivery and focused storytelling made “Exile” one of the night’s most affecting performances. Lionel Richie called it one of his favorite Chris performances of the season and praised the delivery as “spot on.” Chris carried that emotional sensibility into Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?,” which the judges described as a special moment. The two choices cohered without feeling interchangeable.
3. Braden Rumfelt — “Cardigan” and “This Love”
Braden showed range between the reflective “Cardigan” and Maroon 5’s “This Love.” The judges praised “Cardigan” for taking listeners on an emotional journey; Luke Bryan said it was his favorite Braden performance in the competition to that point. “This Love” shifted the energy, drawing praise for Braden’s confidence, comfort onstage, and rock-star presence. That change of gear makes his two-song set especially memorable.

4. Jordan McCullough — “Tim McGraw” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me”
Jordan made both songs feel considered rather than merely familiar. The judges praised his interpretation and vocal choices on Taylor Swift’s “Tim McGraw,” then singled out the delivery and emotional effect of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Together, the performances showed a strong instinct for songs built around feeling and phrasing.
5. Hannah Harper — “Mean” and “That’s the Way Love Goes”
Hannah brought a banjo-backed arrangement and a sense of personal identity to “Mean,” which the judges praised as authentic to her. Merle Haggard’s “That’s the Way Love Goes” offered a natural continuation: judges noted its warmth and that it sounded like Hannah. Her consistency and clear connection to both songs make this a strong, cohesive pairing.

6. Daniel Stallworth — “Fearless” and “Best Part”
Daniel took “Fearless” in a gospel direction, earning praise for showmanship and an interpretation that made the song his own. He played piano on H.E.R. and Daniel Caesar’s “Best Part,” where judges praised both the performance and his versatility. The two arrangements revealed different sides of his musicianship, though the night’s strongest emotional moments belonged to the contestants above him.
7. Brooks Rosser — “Love Story” and “She Will Be Loved”
Brooks’s distinctive voice and storytelling were assets on “Love Story,” but judges wanted more energy and more relaxed phrasing. “She Will Be Loved” was described as a stronger fit and a solid performance. The second song improved the overall impression, but the pair did not reach the same level of individual stamp or momentum as the other sets.

Episode context and audience figures
The California segment accompanied a tourism collaboration. Visit California said contestants explored Los Angeles locations including Griffith Park and Santa Monica Pier, and presented the round as a tribute to artists with ties to the state.
ABC / Disney Entertainment Television reported 5.34 million total viewers for the April 27, 2026 broadcast, attributing the figure to Nielsen National Live+Same Day Big Data Plus Panel ratings. The same April 30 release reported a 0.42 Adults 18–49 rating and 1.6 million social interactions, the latter attributed to Talkwalker. These are network-reported figures for that broadcast and measurement context.
Where to watch the episode
ABC’s April 22 announcement said episodes would stream the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. That announcement records the planned streaming route at the time; it does not establish current catalog availability in every country or region.
