For the U.S. weekend of August 14–16, 2026, the best new shows and movies to stream this weekend across all platforms are Netflix’s broad comedy 72 Hours, Disney+’s family franchise film Camp Rock 3, and HBO Max’s Sunday-night DC drama Lanterns, which premieres August 16 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT and rolls out weekly.
This U.S.-focused guide was researched on August 13, 2026. Streaming schedules can change by region and platform, so confirm availability, release time, subscription tier and rights immediately before publication or viewing. The guide distinguishes premieres, library additions, season launches, weekly rollouts and live events instead of treating every listing as the same kind of release.
Key takeaways
- 72 Hours is the clearest broad-comedy choice, arriving on Netflix on August 14, 2026. Netflix’s official summer-movie guide identifies Tim Story as director and lists Kevin Hart among the cast.
- Camp Rock 3 arrives on Disney+ on August 14, 2026, making it the strongest family and franchise-nostalgia pick for the weekend. Disney+’s August schedule describes Connect 3 returning to Camp Rock to find a new opening act.
- Lanterns is the weekend’s major genre-series event: the eight-episode DC Studios drama premieres on HBO Max on August 16 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, then releases weekly. Warner Bros. Discovery’s release announcement confirms the rollout.
- Hulu has the weekend’s broadest darker and more eclectic August 14 slate, including Violent Ends, The Wizard of the Kremlin, Busboys and new X-Files material.
- Prime Video’s listed August 15 options include the three-part documentary series Abandoned: The Woman in the Decaying House and season two of Betty la Fea: La Historia Continúa, although the supplied Amazon source should be rechecked because its page date is from 2025.
- Paramount+ is most useful this weekend for live sports, including UFC 330, PBR Team Series, PGA Tour coverage and EFL Championship coverage, rather than for one dominant scripted premiere.
What are the best new shows and movies to stream this weekend across all platforms?
The best choice depends on the kind of night you want. Pick 72 Hours for an uncomplicated comedy, Camp Rock 3 for family viewing and Disney nostalgia, or save Sunday night for Lanterns. Documentary-minded viewers should also check the nonfiction and sports-related arrivals on Disney+ and Prime Video, while Hulu supplies the strongest darker alternative.
| Pick | Platform and date | Release shape | Best for | Why choose it |

| Lanterns | HBO Max August 16, 2026, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT |
Season premiere; weekly episodes | DC fans and viewers wanting a Sunday-night event | John Stewart and Hal Jordan investigate a murder in the American heartland in an earthbound mystery with cosmic connections. |
| Hulu’s August 14 arrivals | Hulu August 14, 2026 |
Film and library additions | Adults seeking darker or less familiar choices | The slate includes Violent Ends, The Wizard of the Kremlin, Busboys and two X-Files-related titles. |
| Abandoned: The Woman in the Decaying House | Prime Video August 15, 2026, subject to confirmation |
Three-part documentary series | Documentary and investigative-story viewers | Journalist Chico Felitti continues an investigation involving a São Paulo mansion and allegations concerning a domestic worker. |
What should you watch on Netflix on August 14, 2026?
72 Hours is the Netflix recommendation for viewers who want a broad comedy rather than a demanding drama. Netflix’s official summer guide describes Tim Story’s film as a wild three-day bachelor-party story set in Miami and lists Kevin Hart, Marcello Hernández, Mason Gooding, Kam Patterson, Ben Marshall, Kevin Dunn, Zach Cherry, Teyana Taylor and Andy Garcia among the cast.

The film is the safest choice for a group that wants a recognizable, easy-to-start movie on Friday, August 14. The available research does not provide a release time or subscription-tier detail, so check the Netflix title page on publication day if the precise launch hour matters.
Another Netflix arrival to verify
Don’t Say Good Luck is also identified as beginning on Netflix on August 14 by a current weekly release guide, but that date has only medium confidence in the supplied research. The Tom’s Guide August 10–16 release guide is the source for the listing, so confirm the title directly with Netflix before treating it as a locked recommendation.
What new movies are on Disney+ this Friday?
Camp Rock 3 is the strongest Disney+ choice for families and viewers returning to the franchise. Disney’s official synopsis says, “When Connect 3 loses their opening act for a major reunion tour, they return to their beloved Camp Rock to discover the next big thing.” The plot sends the band back to camp while campers compete for the opportunity to open for Connect 3.
Disney’s separate premiere announcement confirms a Disney Channel premiere on August 13, followed by the Disney+ release on August 14. That distinction matters: viewers looking specifically for the streaming debut should use August 14, not the earlier television date.

Other Disney+ arrivals on August 14
Disney+ also lists E60: Fistful of Steel: The Rise of Bubba Wallace, This is What They Want, Tim Richmond: To the Limit, Venus vs. and a new episode of Flex X Cop for August 14. These titles give documentary and sports-story viewers additional options beyond the headline Camp Rock premiere. The schedule does not provide enough detail here to rank their subjects or formats against one another, so check the individual Disney+ listings before choosing.
When does Lanterns premiere on HBO Max?
Lanterns premieres on HBO Max on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. The first season has eight episodes, and episodes arrive weekly rather than appearing as a complete season at launch.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s official logline describes the story this way: “The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery with cosmic ties as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” The premise makes Lanterns the best pick for viewers who want a substantial Sunday-night genre appointment rather than a film they can finish in one sitting.

Do not plan a full-season binge for August 16. The documented release shape is one premiere followed by weekly episodes, and the available research does not establish the exact schedule for every subsequent episode.
What is worth watching on Hulu this weekend?
Hulu is the best platform in this guide for adults looking beyond the broad Netflix comedy and family-friendly Disney+ franchise film. Hulu’s official August schedule lists the following arrivals for Friday, August 14, 2026:

| Hulu title | Year or edition listed | How to treat the arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Busboys | 2026 | New Hulu-listed film arrival |
| Violent Ends | 2025 | New Hulu-listed film arrival |
| The Wizard of the Kremlin | 2025 | New Hulu-listed film arrival |
| The X-Files: I Want to Believe | 2008 | Catalog availability; not a new film |
| The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn | 2026, Director’s Cut | Newly listed X-Files-related edition |
Hulu’s official August 2026 schedule also lists Bakers vs. Fakers, Evil Lives Here, Expedition X and Say Yes to the Dress seasons on August 15. Next Goal Wins appears as a library addition. The schedule supports calling these Hulu arrivals or additions; it does not support calling every title a premiere.
For a darker movie night, start with Violent Ends or The Wizard of the Kremlin. For viewers specifically interested in the X-Files material, note that the August 14 list includes both the 2008 film and the 2026 Director’s Cut title rather than one single new version.
What is new on Prime Video on August 15?
Abandoned: The Woman in the Decaying House is the most documentary-relevant Prime Video listing in the supplied weekend research. The three-part series continues journalist Chico Felitti’s investigation into a case involving a São Paulo mansion and allegations concerning a domestic worker.
Betty la Fea: La Historia Continúa season two is also listed for August 15. Amazon’s description places Betty at a point where decisions affect her present and her family history, with new secrets involving her relationships. Because this is a season-two arrival, the title is a returning-series option rather than a new-series premiere.
Viewers starting their weekend queue early can also find Butterfly and Sausage Party: Foodtopia among the listed August 13 arrivals. Those titles arrive Thursday, August 13, rather than during the exact Friday–Sunday window.

Verification note: the supplied About Amazon programming page is dated August 1, 2025, while this guide covers August 2026. Treat the Prime Video dates and availability as provisional until Amazon’s current U.S. August 2026 schedule confirms them immediately before publication.
What is on Paramount+ this weekend?
Paramount+ is the strongest choice here for live sports and selected library programming, not for a single dominant scripted premiere. The official schedule lists Bleed For This and UFC 330: Makhachev vs. Machado Garry on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The weekend sports schedule also includes PBR Team Series and EFL Championship coverage on August 14, PGA Tour coverage on August 15–16, and additional EFL Championship coverage on August 16. Paramount’s official Paramount+ schedule is the appropriate place to confirm the event dates and any live-event changes before watching.
Choose Paramount+ if a live fight, golf, bull riding or soccer coverage is more appealing than starting a new scripted series. Readers who already have access to Paramount+ can use the service as a useful weekend supplement; the supplied research does not establish a price or required tier, so this guide does not state one.

No Apple TV+ title with a clearly documented August 14–16, 2026 premiere was identified in the official Apple TV Press material reviewed for this guide. No Peacock title with a sufficiently supported premiere in the same window was confirmed either.

Those findings do not prove that Apple TV+ or Peacock have no additions. They mean only that this research pass did not establish a qualifying premiere strongly enough to recommend one. A platform-by-platform list should not add an older title merely to create symmetry.
Which streaming pick fits your weekend?
| If you want… | Start with… | Reason | Best night |
|---|---|---|---|
| A broad comedy | 72 Hours on Netflix | It is the clearest uncomplicated comedy recommendation in the weekend slate. | Friday, August 14 |
| Family viewing and franchise nostalgia | Camp Rock 3 on Disney+ | The film returns to Camp Rock and is built around Connect 3 finding a new opening act. | Friday, August 14 |
| A darker adult alternative | Hulu’s August 14 film arrivals | Violent Ends and The Wizard of the Kremlin offer a different mood from the headline picks. | Friday, August 14 |
| A documentary or sports story | Abandoned on Prime Video or the Disney+ nonfiction listings | Abandoned is a three-part investigation, while Disney+ lists several sports and documentary-related titles. | Friday or Saturday, subject to Prime confirmation |

Before you press play
- Confirm the date in the U.S. catalog. This guide is U.S.-oriented and covers August 14–16, 2026; regional rights can differ.
- Check the release shape. Lanterns is a weekly series premiere, not a complete-season drop. Betty la Fea: La Historia Continúa is a season-two arrival, and the available material does not establish its episode-release pattern.
- Recheck uncertain listings. The August 14 date for Don’t Say Good Luck comes from a weekly release guide rather than the cited Netflix summer page. Prime Video’s supplied source also requires a current 2026 verification.
- Do not assume a subscription tier or price. The supplied research does not verify weekend-specific pricing, premium-tier requirements or release times except for Lanterns.
- Separate new titles from catalog additions. Hulu’s list includes the 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe alongside newer listings, while Hulu also identifies Next Goal Wins as a library addition.
If the priority is one decisive recommendation, choose 72 Hours for comedy, Camp Rock 3 for family viewing, or Lanterns for the weekend’s most clearly timed genre event. Documentary viewers should begin with Abandoned or the nonfiction-related Disney+ listings after confirming the current platform pages.
