January 2025’s biggest streaming events were Severance season 2 on Apple TV+, Harley Quinn season 5 on Max, and Cameron Diaz’s return in Back in Action on Netflix. The month also brought acclaimed movies such as A Real Pain, Unstoppable, and A Different Man, plus a strong lineup for horror, animation, families, and science-fiction fans.
This is a U.S.-specific snapshot of titles that premiered or were listed for streaming in January 2025. It is not a claim that every title remains on its named service now: streaming rights and catalogs change. The dates below describe when each title arrived or was scheduled to arrive on the relevant platform.
The three January streaming events to prioritize
If you only want the month’s most significant releases, start with these three. They represent three different kinds of streaming appointment: a prestige drama returning with a weekly rollout, an adult animated comedy beginning a new season, and a major Netflix movie built around two movie stars.
- Severance season 2 — Apple TV+, January 17, 2025. The second season premiered globally on January 17 and consisted of 10 episodes released weekly through March 21. It was therefore a week-by-week viewing event rather than a complete-season drop.
- Harley Quinn season 5 — Max, January 16, 2025. The animated series returned with a weekly schedule through March 20. The new season moved the story toward Metropolis while retaining the show’s core voice cast.
- Back in Action — Netflix, January 17, 2025. Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx play retired CIA agents whose cover is exposed, forcing them back into the action. The film marked Diaz’s first movie in more than a decade.
These were the clearest “watch it when it arrives” choices. Severance and Harley Quinn rewarded viewers willing to follow a weekly schedule, while Back in Action was the straightforward choice for a same-day action-comedy movie night.

Best new movies that arrived on streaming
Several of January’s most worthwhile movies were not new theatrical productions; they were films making a significant streaming debut or becoming newly available on a particular service. That distinction matters when reading a release calendar.
A Real Pain — Hulu, January 16
Jesse Eisenberg wrote and directed this character-driven drama and co-stars with Kieran Culkin. The two play cousins traveling through Poland in honor of their late grandmother. It is the strongest January choice for viewers who want a compact, sharply observed film rather than a franchise spectacle.
Unstoppable — Prime Video, January 16
This sports drama is based on wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with one leg. Jharrel Jerome plays Robles, with Don Cheadle and Jennifer Lopez also starring. Choose it for an inspirational sports story grounded in a real person’s career rather than a fictional competition.
A Different Man — Max, January 17
Sebastian Stan stars in this A24 film about identity, appearance, and representation. Its premise makes it a more unusual selection than the month’s conventional action and franchise offerings, and it is a good fit for viewers looking for a challenging contemporary drama.

The franchise prequel was listed for Prime Video at the beginning of the month. It is the most recognizable science-fiction-horror choice in Prime Video’s January lineup and a natural pick for anyone who wants a tense creature-feature evening.
Other movie options worth noting
- The Fall Guy — Prime Video, January 2: a mainstream action-comedy option that pairs well with Back in Action.
- 65 — Hulu, January 8: a science-fiction survival film and a narrower genre choice for Hulu subscribers.
- Sleep — Hulu, January 21: a horror option for viewers who prefer unsettling psychological material.
- Henry Danger: The Movie — Paramount+, during the January 13–19 release week: a family-oriented superhero comedy in which the Nickelodeon character is pulled into an alternate reality after a superfan traps him there.
January 2025 streaming releases by platform
Netflix
| Title | Date or release window | Why watch |
|---|---|---|
| Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl | January 3 | Family animation with the series’ distinctive British comedy. |
| XO, Kitty season 2 | January 13–19 release week | The second season of Netflix’s To All the Boys spinoff. |
| Back in Action | January 17 | Star-driven action comedy with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. |
| Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 | January | Adult animation with a dark fantasy and vampire-horror focus. |
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl was the clearest Netflix recommendation for families and animation fans. XO, Kitty season 2 served viewers looking for a returning romantic coming-of-age series, while Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 was the better choice for adults who wanted animated fantasy with a darker tone.
The month’s largest Netflix movie was Back in Action. Its premise—two former CIA agents trying to protect their family after their secret past is exposed—makes it an easy selection for viewers who want a familiar, accessible action movie rather than a slow-burn drama.
Hulu
| Title | Date or release window | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, and Insidious: Chapter 3 | January 1 | Horror-franchise catalog additions |
| 65 | January 8 | Science-fiction survival |
| A Real Pain | January 16 | Drama |
| Sleep | January 21 | Horror |
Hulu’s best movie arrival was A Real Pain, but the platform’s January 1 addition of the first three Insidious films made it particularly useful for a horror marathon. The trilogy was a catalog addition, not a set of new 2025 productions. Viewers who prefer science fiction could pair 65 with another month’s creature or survival movie, while Sleep offered a separate horror choice later in the month.

|---|---|---|
| A Quiet Place: Day One | January 1 | Franchise science-fiction horror |
| The Fall Guy | January 2 | Action comedy |
| Unstoppable | January 16 | True-story sports drama |
Prime Video had one of the month’s most varied movie slates. A Quiet Place: Day One was the choice for suspense, The Fall Guy for lighter action, and Unstoppable for a biographical sports drama. The latter became available during the January 13–19 release week, with January 16 identified as its arrival date in contemporaneous reporting.

Apple TV+
Severance season 2 — January 17
Apple TV+’s major January event was the return of Severance. Season 2 premiered globally on January 17, 2025, and released 10 episodes weekly through March 21. That schedule is important: viewers who expected all 10 episodes at once would instead have received a continuing weekly rollout.
The series was the month’s clearest prestige-TV appointment. It belongs under Apple TV+, not Max. Some generalized streaming lists have misplaced it, but Apple’s official release information identifies Apple TV+ as the platform.
Max
| Title | Date or release window | Why watch |
|---|---|---|
| An Update On Our Family | January 15 | HBO Original documentary/reality series |
| Harley Quinn season 5 | January 16 | Adult animated comedy |
| A Different Man | January 17 | A24 drama |
Harley Quinn season 5 premiered on January 16 and released one episode weekly through March 20. The season’s setting expanded toward Metropolis, giving the returning animated comedy a new setting while preserving its established ensemble.
For movie night, A Different Man was Max’s most distinctive January debut. Sebastian Stan’s film examines identity and representation, making it better suited to viewers who want a conversation-starting drama than to anyone seeking uncomplicated comfort viewing. An Update On Our Family, an HBO Original debut listed for January 15, provided a documentary and reality-oriented alternative.
Disney+
| Title | Date or release window | Audience |
|---|---|---|
| Goosebumps: The Vanishing | January 10 | Genre-focused family and teen viewing |
| A Real Bug’s Life season 2 | Available during the January 13–19 week | Nature and family documentary viewing |
| Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man | January 29 | Marvel animation |
Disney+’s lineup covered three different family-viewing moods. Goosebumps: The Vanishing was the genre pick, A Real Bug’s Life season 2 brought new insect subjects in a documentary format, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man delivered a late-month animated superhero option.
Peacock
SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night — January 13–19 release week
Peacock’s notable January addition was this four-part documentary series about Saturday Night Live. Its behind-the-scenes focus includes the writers’ room, auditions, and the creation of iconic sketches. It is a natural choice for viewers interested in television history, comedy production, or the process behind a long-running series rather than a scripted drama.
Paramount+
Henry Danger: The Movie — January 13–19 release week
Paramount+ added a feature-length continuation of the Nickelodeon character during the January 13–19 window. The story sends Henry Danger into an alternate reality after a superfan traps him there. Families looking for superhero-flavored viewing should place it alongside Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Disney+’s January animation rather than alongside the month’s adult genre titles.

Shudder
Shudder’s January schedule was the strongest destination for specialist horror viewers. Titles listed for January 1 included:
- The Others
- The Wolf Man (1941)
- Irreversible
- Wolfman (2010)
- Malum
- Mind Body Spirit
- Invoking Yell
- Beaten to Death
- The Thing
Later January additions included Get Away, Red Rooms, and Grafted. The schedule mixed established films, international or independent horror, and newer genre releases. The titles were listed as arrivals or catalog additions; the schedule does not establish that every one was a Shudder original.

Best January picks by mood
For prestige television
Choose Severance season 2 on Apple TV+. Its weekly release schedule made it the month’s main television appointment and gave viewers time to discuss each episode rather than consume the season in one sitting.
For adult animation
Start with Harley Quinn season 5 on Max if you want irreverent comedy, or Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 on Netflix if you prefer dark fantasy. Both are returning animated series, but they serve very different tones.

A Real Pain is the best fit for an intimate, character-focused drama, while A Different Man is the more confrontational choice about identity and representation. Both were January streaming debuts rather than brand-new 2025 theatrical productions.
For action and adventure
Back in Action is the obvious Netflix option, The Fall Guy supplies a lighter action-comedy alternative on Prime Video, and Unstoppable offers a real-life sports story with a more inspirational angle.
For horror
Hulu’s January 1 Insidious additions make it the simplest choice for a franchise marathon. Prime Video’s A Quiet Place: Day One is the recognizable science-fiction-horror pick, while Shudder offers the deepest specialist selection, including The Others, the 1941 The Wolf Man, Malum, Red Rooms, and Grafted.
For families and younger viewers
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is the safest all-ages animation recommendation in the lineup. Henry Danger: The Movie, Goosebumps: The Vanishing, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and season 2 of A Real Bug’s Life offer additional options depending on whether the household wants superheroes, mild horror, or nature documentary viewing.
January 1 catalog additions are not the same as new releases
Release calendars often combine genuinely new streaming premieres with older films returning to a platform. January 2025 was no exception. The January 1 lists also included established titles such as Inception, Interstellar, John Wick, The Social Network, The Blues Brothers, and The Thing.
That distinction changes how to interpret the word “new.” A title can be new to a service without being a new production, a new theatrical release, or a 2025 film. The Insidious trilogy on Hulu and the January 1 genre films on Shudder are useful examples: they expanded what subscribers could watch during the month, but they were catalog additions rather than new 2025 productions.
How to watch the January lineup
First, check the app and the title’s current listing in your own U.S. account before planning a movie night. A January 2025 premiere date does not guarantee that the title remains available in 2026, and availability can differ by country.

- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Confirm the platform. Severance is on Apple TV+, Harley Quinn is on Max, and Back in Action is on Netflix. Do not rely on a generic search result that may show a rental, purchase, or outdated listing instead.
- Check whether the release was weekly. Severance season 2 and Harley Quinn season 5 were not full-season drops. The date in the calendar identifies the first episode.
- Check the subscription or rental status. A title being associated with a service does not necessarily mean every plan, bundle, or account in every region provides access.
- Use the television’s official app when possible. If your TV lacks one of these apps, a 4K streaming device can provide a simpler way to access supported streaming apps. Check the device’s current compatibility before buying; no single device should be assumed to support every service or every app in every market.
- Recheck before watching. Streaming libraries change, particularly for licensed films. The dates in this guide are historical January 2025 arrival dates, not a guarantee of present-day access.
A practical January watchlist
For a balanced month of viewing, begin with the weekly episodes of Severance season 2 and Harley Quinn season 5. Add Back in Action for an easy action movie, A Real Pain for a quieter drama, and A Quiet Place: Day One for science-fiction horror. Families can substitute Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl or Henry Danger: The Movie, while dedicated horror viewers can build a longer schedule from Hulu’s Insidious trilogy and Shudder’s January catalog.
The main takeaway is that January 2025 favored variety over one dominant genre: major returning television, star-led movies, recognizable franchises, independent dramas, documentaries, family animation, and deep horror catalog additions all arrived across the services.
