For a February 2024 snapshot, start with Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical or tick, tick…BOOM!. The first is the strongest all-ages stage-to-screen recommendation; the second is the most emotionally substantial choice for adults and musical-theater fans. From there, Vivo and Over the Moon cover animated family viewing, while The Prom, Jingle Jangle, 13: The Musical, A Week Away, and Julie and the Phantoms fill out the list by mood and audience.
How this February 2024 list works
This is an editorial recommendation list, not an official Netflix ranking or a critic-score leaderboard. The selections are based on the strength of each musical’s premise, performances, soundtrack, audience fit, and connection to stage or literary source material. The February 10, 2024 snapshot that prompted this guide described these titles as musicals streaming on Netflix at that time; Netflix’s catalog is regional and constantly changing.
The list includes both films and one series. Julie and the Phantoms is clearly marked as a nine-episode musical series rather than a movie.
#1 Best Overall
The two best places to start
1. Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical
Best for: families, theater fans, literary adaptations, energetic choreography, and viewers who want a polished stage musical on screen.
This 2022 adaptation brings together three familiar versions of the same story: Roald Dahl’s novel, the stage musical, and the Netflix film. Matilda is an exceptionally intelligent child who uses imagination, courage, and a strong sense of justice to change the circumstances around her. Alisha Weir leads the cast as Matilda, with Emma Thompson as the formidable Miss Trunchbull and Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey.
The film is an especially good first recommendation because it works whether or not you know the book or theater production. It has the scale and choreography of a stage show, but the camera allows the story to move beyond the limitations of a theater. The result is exuberant without losing the book’s darker sense of injustice.
If the film leaves you wanting more Matilda, read Roald Dahl’s original Matilda. Penguin lists the source novel in hardback, paperback, ebook, and audio formats. That book is the story behind the musical—not the screenplay or a guaranteed copy of the film’s stage script—so readers should choose the format they prefer.
2. tick, tick…BOOM!
Best for: adults, aspiring writers and performers, Broadway audiences, and viewers who prefer a serious music drama over a lightweight musical comedy.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature-directing debut adapts Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical. It follows Jon, a theater composer approaching 30, as he works in a New York diner while trying to complete an important show. Artistic ambition collides with money worries, relationship strain, professional uncertainty, and the fear that time is running out.
The film’s theatrical subject matter gives it unusual appeal for anyone interested in songwriting, Broadway history, or the personal cost of creative ambition. It is also a strong companion recommendation to Vivo: both are connected to Miranda, but tick, tick…BOOM! is an adult drama about a composer, not an all-ages adventure.
The distinction matters: this is an adaptation of an autobiographical musical, not a documentary and not a claim that every event is a literal recreation of Larson’s life. Its power comes from translating the emotional truth of the stage work into a cinematic story.

3. The Prom
Best for: viewers who want a star-led Broadway adaptation, LGBTQ+ themes, large production numbers, and an optimistic tone.
Rank #2
- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
The Prom is a musical comedy about a group of down-on-their-luck Broadway performers who travel to an Indiana town to support Emma, a teenager who wants to attend prom with her girlfriend. The principal cast includes Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, Andrew Rannells, and Ariana DeBose.
This is the broadest and most overtly show-business-focused recommendation here. It uses celebrity performances, colorful staging, and a hopeful social premise to tell a story about belonging and public solidarity. It is best approached as an exuberant, contemporary Broadway comedy rather than an understated coming-of-age drama.
4. Vivo
Best for: families, animation fans, Lin-Manuel Miranda listeners, and anyone looking for a warm adventure built around music.
Recommended Free Tools
In this 2021 animated musical, a music-loving kinkajou sets out to deliver a love song for an old friend. Lin-Manuel Miranda is among the featured voices and musical contributors, alongside Ynairaly Simo and Zoe Saldaña. The journey combines friendship, loss, family feeling, and adventure with a soundtrack-forward structure.
Vivo is an accessible choice for a mixed-age audience. It has enough musical personality for adults who are listening for Miranda’s work, while its animal hero and quest narrative make it easy family viewing. Choose it when you want emotional warmth without the heavier creative and biographical concerns of tick, tick…BOOM!.
5. Over the Moon
Best for: animated fantasy, mythology, visually ambitious musical adventures, and stories about grief, family, and moving forward.
Over the Moon follows Fei Fei, who builds a spacecraft and travels to the moon in search of a legendary moon goddess. The fantasy premise opens into a story about memory, family change, and the difficult process of accepting a new reality. Netflix presents it as a kids’ musical and family adventure, while also highlighting its soundtrack and Golden Globe nomination.

6. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey
Best for: holiday viewing, elaborate production design, family audiences, and traditional fantasy-musical storytelling.
This is the seasonal pick on the list. The story centers on a once-joyful toymaker whose former apprentice betrays him, leaving him discouraged and separated from his creative purpose. His granddaughter helps him recover hope and rediscover his gift.
Jingle Jangle works best as a Christmas or holiday-season choice rather than as a neutral year-round recommendation. Its appeal is the combination of invention, spectacle, family sentiment, and a classic fantasy structure. The original songs include work by John Legend, Philip Lawrence, and Davy Nathan.

Best for: younger viewers, school stories, friendship, and families looking for a lighter contemporary coming-of-age musical.
This 2022 film follows a middle-schooler who moves from New York to Indiana after his parents’ divorce. Determined to make his upcoming bar mitzvah memorable, he tries to build a new social life and stage the best celebration possible.
The school setting, friendship plot, and coming-of-age concerns make 13: The Musical a straightforward feel-good choice. It is aimed at a younger audience and should not be expected to occupy the same emotional register as Matilda or the adult theater drama tick, tick…BOOM!.
8. A Week Away
Best for: viewers seeking a faith-based, uplifting teen musical with romance, friendship, and summer-camp energy.

The faith-and-spirituality premise is central rather than incidental, so it is worth saying plainly what kind of musical this is. Viewers looking specifically for a family-friendly Christian or faith-oriented story may find it a natural fit; viewers wanting a secular Broadway adaptation should choose The Prom or Matilda instead.

9. Julie and the Phantoms
Best for: teen audiences, pop-rock performance stories, school-band narratives, and viewers who want a longer watch than a single film.
Julie and the Phantoms is a nine-episode musical series about Julie, a teenager who starts singing again after three ghostly musicians appear and help her form a band. Kenny Ortega directed and choreographed the series, which combines school-life drama, supernatural elements, friendship, and performance.
Its episodic format gives the characters more room to develop than a two-hour movie. Pick it when you want a binge centered on rehearsals, relationships, and pop-rock numbers rather than a self-contained theatrical story. It is also useful for younger viewers who have finished the film recommendations and want a continuing musical narrative.

Netflix’s library is not universal. A title may be available in one country but absent in another, and licensing can remove or restore films without notice. The recommendations above describe the February 2024 snapshot, not a promise that all nine titles remain in every Netflix library. Check the Netflix search results for your country and account before planning a themed movie night.
