There is no official all-time ranking of the best Survivor Series matches. The strongest picks span the event’s original elimination-team format, landmark singles bouts, and newer match concepts—chosen here for execution, story and stakes, historical significance, and lasting rewatch value.
How Survivor Series became more than an elimination-match show
WWE dates Survivor Series to 1987, when its first event introduced the namesake team-elimination format. WWE describes that Thanksgiving-night event as counterprogramming to the NWA’s Starrcade and says it was the first and only time the two promotions went head-to-head on pay-per-view. Those are WWE’s historical characterizations, rather than an independent account of the event’s business context. WWE’s Survivor Series retrospective also notes the 1988 traditional match had 20 competitors, with The Powers of Pain the only survivors.

But the event has never been limited to that format. Its cards have included championship singles matches, tournament bouts, stipulations and, in more recent years, WarGames. WWE’s history pages also mark career milestones: The Undertaker’s in-ring debut in 1990, Kurt Angle’s in-ring debut in 1999, and The Rock’s first WWE Championship victory at the event. That variety is why a useful best-of list needs to look beyond the largest team matches.

The selections below are recommendations, not an official WWE order or a claim of universal critical consensus. WWE’s 2016 Subscriber’s Choice feature considered 30 candidate matches and selected 15 through fan voting; it is a useful reference point, but the page does not publish vote totals. - WWE SURVIVOR SERIES ANTH 1987-1991 VOL 1 (DVD MOVIE)
1987: Randy Savage’s team vs. The Honky Tonk Man’s team
The inaugural Survivor Series match is the essential starting point because it established the event’s defining team-elimination identity. WWE’s retrospective emphasizes the tactical teamwork and the closing situation in which Honky Tonk Man is left facing Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat and Jake Roberts. Its appeal is as much historical as dramatic: the format that gave the event its name is on display from the beginning. WWE’s 1987 event retrospective recounts the match.
1992: Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels
This singles championship match shows how naturally Survivor Series could accommodate a focused one-on-one story alongside its team tradition. WWE included it in the Subscriber’s Choice collection, making it a defensible pick for viewers who want a major rivalry bout rather than an elimination spectacle. WWE’s fan-voted selection lists the match.
Rank #2
1996: Bret Hart vs. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
Hart and Austin’s match is a strong choice for viewers interested in rivalry storytelling and the historical context around a changing era in WWE. It also appeared in WWE’s 2016 fan-voted group of memorable Survivor Series matches. The selection is evidence that fans placed it among that feature’s candidates—not proof of a definitive all-time ranking. WWE’s collection includes it.
1997: Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart
The WWE Championship match is among the event’s most consequential entries, and WWE’s archive records it as a major title bout. Its place in Survivor Series history is inseparable from what followed, but accounts of the backstage circumstances have often been dramatized; the match itself and the documented result are firmer ground than unverified retellings. WWE also included the bout in its Subscriber’s Choice collection. The fan-voted collection and the event record provide the relevant context.
2003: Team Austin vs. Team Bischoff
This traditional elimination match tied team survival to an explicit storyline consequence: Stone Cold Steve Austin’s position as Raw co-general manager was at stake. Randy Orton emerged as the sole survivor, giving the outcome a clear narrative function beyond simply determining which team lasted longest. WWE’s results archive documents the match and its outcome. WWE’s 2003 event page records the card.
2014: Team Cena vs. Team Authority
WWE described this elimination match as a “game-changing battle” and included it in the Subscriber’s Choice collection. That phrase is WWE’s own characterization; the match earns a place here because its team contest carried a major storyline consequence for the Authority, making the survival format central to the event’s stakes. WWE’s collection features it.
Rank #4
2017: Brock Lesnar vs. AJ Styles
The champion-versus-champion match put two contrasting styles into a singles contest and was later identified by WWE as one of Survivor Series’ dream matches. It is a useful entry for viewers curious about the event’s brand-versus-brand period, when inter-brand matchups helped shape the card. WWE’s retrospective on dream matches includes Lesnar vs. Styles.
2018: Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte Flair
WWE also highlighted Rousey vs. Flair as a recent dream match. Its inclusion illustrates how Survivor Series used champion-versus-champion programming to stage a matchup that did not depend on the traditional team format. WWE’s dream-match retrospective identifies the bout.

WarGames matches from 2022 onward
WarGames gives the event’s modern era a distinct team-match identity: it is not simply another traditional Survivor Series elimination contest. WWE’s event archive lists WarGames-era events for 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, but that listing establishes coverage, not a quality ranking. Choose a specific year’s match based on its teams, storyline and finish rather than treating every WarGames card as equally strong. WWE’s event archive lists the recent editions.
