What happened at the iHeartRadio Music Awards?
The 12th annual iHeartRadio Music Awards took place on April 1, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Beyoncé received the Innovator Award, which iHeart said recognized her impact on music and culture and her creative risks. Stevie Wonder presented the award. iHeart’s event report and the March 21 announcement provide the ceremony details.
Before her remarks, Beyoncé thanked Wonder for playing harmonica on her cover of “Jolene,” from COWBOY CARTER. She also said he was an artist she would listen to for the rest of her life.
Which artists did Beyoncé thank?
In the speech excerpt published by iHeart, Beyoncé named Rosetta Tharpe, Tracy Chapman, Linda Martell, Prince, Stevie Wonder, André 3000, Tina Turner and Michael Jackson, then added “and so many more.” She credited them as artists who “defied any label placed upon them.”

Her thanks connected generations and genres rather than presenting a formal ranking or a complete list of influences. The names in iHeart’s published excerpt are the artists she specifically identified there; the words “and so many more” leave the acknowledgment open-ended.
What did Beyoncé say about innovation?
Beyoncé described innovation as both imagination and difficult work. In iHeart’s published excerpt, she said, “Innovation starts with a dream, but then you have to execute that dream and that road can be very bumpy.” She also called an innovator someone “seeing what everyone believes is impossible.”

She spoke about the personal cost of taking creative risks: “Being an innovator often means being criticized, which often will test your mental strength.” Her remarks framed innovation not only as making something new, but also as persisting when the work is doubted.
What change did she ask the music industry to make?
Beyoncé directed a request to record labels, radio stations and award shows, asking them to be more receptive to art before deciding what it should sound or look like. Her words, as reported by iHeart, were: “So to all the record labels, every radio station, every award show, my hope is that we are more open to the joy and liberation that comes from enjoying art with no preconceived notions.”

That appeal tied her industry-wide message to the artists she had just thanked: listeners and gatekeepers, she suggested, should give unfamiliar or unconventional work the chance to be heard on its own terms.

iHeartMedia announced that the ceremony was scheduled for FOX and nationwide iHeartRadio broadcast. Its April 2 recap confirms that the show aired live on FOX and on iHeartRadio stations and the app. The same recap documented historical replay windows: Hulu through April 22, 2024, and Tubi from April 9 through April 29, 2024.
