Its most consequential change is the ending: Nani pursues marine biology studies while neighbor Tūtū takes Lilo into her care. The remake also adds supporting characters and gives its final conflict a more action-heavy treatment.
What stays the same—and what changes
Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, Disney’s 2025 film reimagines the 2002 animated movie with human actors in the roles of Lilo, Nani and the people around them, while Stitch is a digital character. The central relationship and family premise remain recognizable, but the new film changes parts of the supporting cast and, most notably, how the sisters’ story ends.
Disney described the aim as a tribute rather than a literal translation. Camp said, “We tried to adapt it in a way that paid loving tribute to the original, but wasn’t a one-to-one literal translation.” Producer Jonathan Eirich likewise said, “Now, that doesn’t mean, ‘Do a shot for shot live-action remake.’” Chris Sanders, co-director of the original film, returns as Stitch’s voice. The Walt Disney Company’s filmmaker interview discusses the adaptation and returning contributors.
How does the live-action ending differ?
Spoilers for the endings of both films: In the 2002 animated film, Lilo, Nani and Stitch end up together as a family. In the 2025 version, Nani pursues marine biology studies, and their neighbor Tūtū takes Lilo into her care. The sisters’ bond remains important, but their living arrangement changes.

- Lilo?s an independent little girl; Stitch is a mischievous creature from outer space, and when their worlds collide, it?s love ? and chaos! ? at first sight.
That is a substantial shift in how the story resolves Nani’s responsibilities and Lilo’s care. Viewers may read the new arrangement differently; it is not a simple scene-for-scene swap. Forbes explains the ending comparison in its analysis of the two films’ endings.
Which characters are new or different?
Tūtū adds a nearby support system
Tūtū is a new supporting character in the live-action story. Disney describes her as a longtime neighbor who has seen the family’s struggles and cares about their future. Her role gives Lilo and Nani a more explicit source of support nearby, and she is central to the changed ending. Disney’s production notes describe her and the other new characters.

New supporting roles and returning performers
The remake also introduces Mrs. Kekoa and a luau manager. Amy Hill, Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee—actors with roles in the 2002 film—return in different roles in the new version. Maia Kealoha plays Lilo, and Sydney Elizebeth Agudong plays Nani; Disney’s official film page lists the cast.
Captain Gantu is absent
Captain Gantu, a character in the animated film, is omitted from the remake. The available official material cited here does not establish why, so his absence should not be treated as evidence of a particular creative rationale.

- Experience this funny and touching live-action reimagining of Disney’s animated classic. When a lonely girl named Lilo adopts Stitch, an alien “puppy,” Stitch helps to mend Lilo’s broken family — but not without wreaking hilarious havoc on the Hawaiian Islands.
How does the final conflict and tone change?
The Associated Press review describes the live-action film as following much of the original while adding a CIA team, explosions and heightened action in the finale. That is the reviewer’s characterization of the new climax, rather than a neutral measure of the films’ tone. AP also criticizes the more explosive ending, while TIME takes issue with how the remake handles Stitch and uses its expanded runtime. Those are critical opinions, not settled facts about how audiences respond.
The practical difference is that the remake’s climax leans more heavily on spectacle, whereas the family relationship remains the story’s emotional center. The Associated Press review is available at AP News, and TIME’s adaptation critique is at TIME.

What changes when animation becomes live action?
The original tells its story through hand-drawn animation; the remake puts human performers in the family and community roles and renders Stitch digitally. That changes the films’ visual language and how their characters appear onscreen, without changing the basic Lilo-and-Stitch relationship. Disney said it sought to translate the story while respecting its setting and cultural nuances, rather than reproduce every shot from the original.
Disney lists the 2025 film’s runtime as 1 hour 52 minutes on its official film page. That figure alone does not establish how many minutes longer it is than the 2002 film.
