Christian Bale ranks first for the most complete dramatic portrayal across a full Batman trilogy. Michael Keaton is the most distinctive gothic interpretation, Adam West made the character’s comic exuberance central, and the remaining actors each fit a different screen version of the hero. This ranking covers the principal live-action theatrical Batman performances from the 1966 feature through the 2022 film; it weighs acting, the Bruce Wayne/Batman contrast, fit with the films’ tone, and the material each actor had to work with. It is a critical ranking, not a claim that there is one objectively correct Batman.
Who counts as a Batman actor in this ranking?
The list covers Adam West’s 1966 feature, tied to his television series, and the six principal actors in DC’s modern theatrical franchise: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson. Their films belong to different continuities and tonal projects, so a performance is judged by how well it works on its own terms—not by whether every Batman is equally dark or realistic.

The 1940s theatrical serials starring Lewis Wilson and Robert Lowery, television-only portrayals, and animated voice performances are outside this field. Those are valid parts of Batman’s screen history, but including them would require a different comparison.
The ranking gives the greatest weight to a persuasive, distinctive performance and a compelling relationship between Bruce Wayne and Batman. It also considers the tone of the film and the extent of the actor’s run. That favors a sustained dramatic arc without making length an automatic advantage. Different weighting can produce a different order: the Washington Post and Den of Geek have published their own rankings and reader discussions without establishing a universal consensus.

The Batman actors, ranked
-
Christian Bale
Bale’s three-film run gives him the strongest complete dramatic arc in this field: Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Nolan’s grounded approach gives the character’s transformation room to develop across a trilogy, making Bale the most satisfying choice for readers who value continuity and dramatic scope. His portrayal is not automatically the best simply because it spans three films; it ranks first because that length serves a sustained version of the character.
-
Michael Keaton
Keaton’s Batman is defined by shadowy restraint, unease, and flashes of humor and vulnerability in Tim Burton’s films, Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). Rather than leaning on an obvious public/private split, he makes Bruce Wayne and the masked figure feel like parts of the same strange, guarded person. That singularity makes Keaton the strongest pick for a gothic Batman, even though Bale’s longer run offers a fuller dramatic arc. Keaton later returned in The Flash (2023).
-
Adam West
West belongs high on the list because he commits fully to a comic, exuberant Batman. His 1966 feature shares its world and style with the television series; judging it by the standards of later gritty films misses what the performance is doing. West treats the heightened material as a genuine interpretation of the character, not as a mistake to apologize for. He is the best choice here for readers who want Batman’s camp side taken seriously.
-
Robert Pattinson
In Matt Reeves’ separate 2022 continuity, Pattinson plays a Batman who works as a detective as well as a vigilante. The film emphasizes a crime-solving, noir-inflected side of the character, and Pattinson’s performance is built around that focus. The ranking is necessarily based on one released feature, rather than a completed multi-film arc, which limits how much of his version can yet be compared with actors who played Batman across several films.

Ben Affleck
Affleck brings an older, physically imposing Batman to the DCEU, beginning with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). He also appeared in Justice League (2017), Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), and The Flash (2023). His screen presence is a clear strength, but his performances sit within ensemble films rather than a series of solo Batman features. That makes a direct comparison with Bale’s trilogy or Pattinson’s detective-led film less even.
-
Val Kilmer
Kilmer played Batman in Batman Forever (1995), following Keaton within the same broader film continuity. His portrayal belongs to Joel Schumacher’s brighter, more theatrical period. Kilmer makes a capable fit for that style, but the single-film run leaves less room for a distinctive interpretation to develop than the multi-film portrayals above it.

George Clooney
Clooney played Batman in Batman & Robin (1997) and made a brief appearance in The Flash (2023). He has an assured Bruce Wayne presence, while the costumed Batman is less convincing. The film’s camp-oriented approach matters: its style and material shape the result, so its shortcomings should not all be assigned to the actor. Clooney is last in this ranking, but his Bruce Wayne remains more persuasive than the overall placement might suggest.
How to choose your personal favorite
| If you value… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A sustained dramatic arc | Christian Bale | His portrayal develops across three films in Nolan’s trilogy. |
| Gothic strangeness and restraint | Michael Keaton | His performance blends unease, humor, and vulnerability in Burton’s films. |
| Camp and comic exuberance | Adam West | The 1966 feature embraces the heightened style of the television-linked version. |
| A detective-noir atmosphere | Robert Pattinson | Reeves’ film foregrounds Batman as a detective. |
| An older, imposing Batman | Ben Affleck | His DCEU portrayal emphasizes physical presence in ensemble films. |
One audience measure offers a useful historical contrast to critics’ rankings. In a March 14–15, 2019 YouGov survey of US adults familiar with Batman, 24% named West as their favorite live-action portrayal, compared with 22% for Bale and 17% for Keaton. That was a preference poll, not an acting assessment, and it predates Pattinson’s 2022 film; it should not be read as a current all-era verdict.
