Best starting point: choose Pearl for psychological horror, Halloween (2018) for a modern slasher, Psycho for classic suspense, Evil Dead Rise for supernatural gore, As Above, So Below for found footage, or House of Spoils for the clearest Prime Video-specific pick. This is a US availability snapshot from October 2024, not a current 2026 catalog: check the service, subscription tier, rental or purchase status, and region before watching.

Important date and location note: This is a historical Halloween watchlist for viewers in the United States during October 2024. Streaming catalogs change by country, date, subscription tier, and licensing deal, so a film listed here may not still be on the same service. Check the title in your current streaming guide before you press play.

Quick picks: the best horror movie for your mood

If you want… Start with… Why it fits
A modern slasher Halloween (2018) A direct continuation of John Carpenter’s 1978 classic, with Michael Myers back in Haddonfield.
Psychological horror Pearl Mia Goth leads Ti West’s character-focused prequel to X, mixing ambition, isolation, and slasher elements.
A classic Psycho Hitchcock’s Bates Motel thriller remains a foundational work of psychological horror.
Supernatural violence Evil Dead Rise Deadites, a Los Angeles high-rise, and extremely graphic family-in-peril horror.
Found footage and claustrophobia As Above, So Below An occult-adventure descent into the Paris Catacombs that steadily tightens the pressure.
A slow, grief-centered dread The Babadook A widowed mother, her son, and a threatening storybook creature anchor Jennifer Kent’s unsettling drama.
Horror satire American Psycho Mary Harron’s adaptation turns 1980s yuppie culture and male ego into dark psychological satire.
A 2024 Prime Video release House of Spoils A chef’s remote restaurant becomes haunted by professional pressure, self-doubt, and the spirit of its previous owner.
International animation Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain A visually distinctive Japanese supernatural story set in the Ōoku, involving the Medicine Seller and spirits born from intense human emotion.

Netflix horror movies documented in October 2024

The October 2024 US recommendations below were identified in contemporaneous Netflix guides. Treat “on Netflix” as a dated, US-specific snapshot—not a permanent availability claim.

Pearl (2022)

Ti West’s Pearl is a strong choice when you want horror built around a damaged, fascinating central character rather than a simple monster chase. Mia Goth plays Pearl, a young woman trapped on a farm while dreaming of Hollywood success. The film is a prequel to X, but it works as its own psychological horror story, gradually turning frustration and isolation into slasher excess.

Halloween (2018)

David Gordon Green’s Halloween follows the 1978 original while disregarding the franchise’s previous sequels. Michael Myers returns to Haddonfield, and Laurie Strode faces him again. Choose it for recognizable slasher mechanics, a modern production, and a direct connection to Carpenter’s classic without needing to follow every branch of the series.

Psycho (1960)

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is the pick for viewers who prefer suspense, psychological unease, and cinematic history to contemporary gore. Its Bates Motel setting and famously disruptive early narrative turn changed what audiences expected from a mainstream thriller. Go in knowing as little as possible.

As Above, So Below (2014)

This found-footage film sends its characters beneath Paris into the Catacombs while they search for the Philosopher’s Stone. The enclosed setting does much of the work: narrow passages, disorientation, occult imagery, and the fear that the group may not find its way back out. It is especially well suited to viewers who like expedition horror and escalating confinement.

Thanksgiving (2023)

Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving expands the fake holiday-slasher trailer from Grindhouse into a knowingly excessive feature. It is campy, bloody, and built around seasonal slasher conventions. Pick it when you want Halloween viewing that is less interested in subtle dread than in inventive kills and unapologetic spectacle.

The Babadook (2014)

Jennifer Kent’s film follows a widowed mother and her son after a disturbing storybook introduces a threatening boogeyman into their home. The film is often discussed through the lens of grief and parental exhaustion, and it is commonly included in conversations about “elevated horror.” Those are useful critical frames, not a guarantee that every viewer will interpret the film the same way. Expect emotional pressure and psychological dread more than a conventional creature-feature rhythm.

The Birds (1963)

Another Hitchcock classic, The Birds imagines a coastal California community attacked by birds for reasons the film refuses to explain neatly. Its power comes from social unease and the collapse of ordinary safety rather than a fully explained supernatural mythology. It is a good choice for a classic-horror night when you want suspense and atmosphere.

Evil Dead Rise (2023)

The fifth Evil Dead film moves the action into a Los Angeles high-rise, where a family becomes trapped with Deadites. This is the visceral option on the list: loud, brutal, supernatural, and heavily reliant on graphic gore. It is best reserved for adult viewers who want an intense splatter experience rather than a restrained haunted-house film.

Annabelle (2014)

This Conjuring spinoff uses a vintage porcelain doll as the center of a possession story involving a couple and satanic cultists. Annabelle is a straightforward supernatural choice for viewers drawn to haunted objects, demonic threats, and familiar studio-horror rhythms.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

Adapted from Alvin Schwartz’s books, the film uses several of those stories within a larger plot. Its folklore-inspired creatures and younger-skewing perspective make it a possible gateway into horror for teens and viewers who do not want the extremity of Evil Dead Rise. Check the current US age rating before watching with younger viewers; ratings and platform listings can change.

Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

Mike Flanagan’s period-set prequel follows a widow and her daughters in 1967 Los Angeles after a spirit-board business opens the door to something dangerous. It is a better fit than a generic board-game recommendation when you specifically want possession themes, a family at risk, and a 1960s setting.

Unfriended (2015)

Almost the entire story unfolds through a computer screen as a group chat is invaded by a supernatural entity seeking revenge. The format is intentionally restrictive, but that restriction is the point: webcams, messages, video calls, and digital traces become the film’s haunted house. Choose it for contained, technology-centered horror rather than traditional gothic atmosphere.

American Psycho (2000)

Mary Harron’s adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel is better described as horror satire or psychological horror than as a supernatural movie. Christian Bale’s Patrick Bateman becomes a vehicle for a dark examination of 1980s yuppie culture, consumerism, and male ego. It is a sharp choice for viewers who want disturbing ideas and black comedy alongside violence.

Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain

Netflix’s September 2024 announcement identified Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain as a Netflix release. Set in the Ōoku, the film follows the Medicine Seller as he confronts mononoke—spirits formed from powerful human emotions. It gives this list an international, animated alternative to live-action slashers and haunted-house stories, with an emphasis on visual design and supernatural folklore.

Other newer Netflix options: The Deliverance and Mr. Crocket

An October 2024 US guide also listed The Deliverance on Netflix and Mr. Crocket on Hulu. These are useful contemporary alternatives if you have already seen the better-known recommendations above, but verify the current listing rather than assuming either title remains on that service.

Prime Video: the seasonal 2024 pick

House of Spoils — reported for Prime Video from October 3, 2024

House of Spoils was the clearest Prime Video-specific horror recommendation for October 2024. The story follows a chef opening her first restaurant at a remote estate. The professional challenge is complicated by self-doubt, mounting pressure, and the vengeful spirit of the estate’s previous owner.

It is a useful choice when you want supernatural horror with a food-and-workplace setting rather than another masked killer or suburban haunting. The historical reporting establishes its Prime Video release context from October 3, 2024; it does not, by itself, establish that the film was or is included in every Prime subscription tier. Check the current access label before assuming it is included with membership.

Classic and franchise alternatives associated with Prime Video

An October 2024 Axios guide listed Dracula (1931) on Prime Video. The Universal classic is the choice for a compact, foundational vampire film and a very different pace from modern streaming horror. Because platform access may mean subscription streaming, rental, or purchase depending on the listing, confirm the route shown for your account.

More services and October 2024 alternatives

The following titles broaden the historical US watchlist beyond Netflix and Prime Video. They are organized by the services identified in October 2024 reporting, not presented as a current 2026 catalog.

  • Max — Salem’s Lot: The 2024 adaptation of Stephen King’s vampire story was described as a Max release. Choose it for a larger-scale small-town vampire premise, and verify whether the current listing is included with Max or offered through another access route.
  • Max — Scream: The postmodern slasher is a strong choice for self-aware horror, mystery plotting, and genre commentary. The October 2024 guide listed it on Max at that time.
  • Peacock — I Know What You Did Last Summer: This late-1990s teen slasher offers a more familiar, formula-driven alternative for viewers in the mood for secrets, pursuit, and a recognizable revenge setup.
  • Hulu — Mr. Crocket: Listed among newer October 2024 horror offerings, it is a contemporary alternative for viewers who have already worked through the better-known Netflix titles.
  • Netflix — The Deliverance: Another newer October 2024 Netflix option, useful when you want a recent supernatural selection rather than a classic or established franchise entry.

Apple TV+, MUBI, and comparable services may also be useful places to search for horror, but the supplied October 2024 reporting does not identify a specific title on each of those services for this list. Do not infer availability merely because a platform is part of a general streaming guide.

Choose by horror style

For a classic night

Start with Psycho or The Birds on Netflix’s historical October 2024 list. If you want a vampire story, choose Dracula (1931), which an October guide listed on Prime Video. These films rely more on suspense, atmosphere, performance, and suggestion than on contemporary gore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a modern slasher

Halloween (2018) is the cleanest choice for a Michael Myers continuation. Thanksgiving is more knowingly outrageous, while Scream brings postmodern mystery and genre self-awareness. The latter two were associated with Netflix and Max, respectively, in October 2024 reporting.

For supernatural horror

Choose Evil Dead Rise for maximum gore, Annabelle for a haunted-object story, or Ouija: Origin of Evil for possession and period atmosphere. House of Spoils offers a more unusual setting, with restaurant anxiety and a vengeful spirit sharing the same story.

For a psychological slow burn

Pearl is the character-driven slasher choice. The Babadook concentrates on grief, family strain, and dread, while American Psycho uses horror as a satirical lens on status and masculinity. None is a conventional jump-scare-only movie.

For found footage or contained-format horror

As Above, So Below is the pick for physical claustrophobia and occult exploration. Unfriended creates its confinement through a computer screen and group chat. Both restrict the viewer’s perspective, but one descends underground while the other stays almost entirely online.

For teens or a less extreme gateway

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has the most obvious younger-skewing, folklore-based positioning in this group. That does not mean it is suitable for every child: check the current rating, content warnings, and your platform’s listing before choosing it for a family viewing.

For international and visually distinctive horror

Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain is the clearest choice. Its animated format, Japanese setting, Medicine Seller protagonist, and emotion-born spirits make it a markedly different experience from the English-language slashers and possession films in the rest of the list.

Streaming, renting, buying, or owning: what the label means

“Available on a service” is not always the same as “included in the subscription.” Before starting a film, distinguish among these access routes:

Access route What to check Best for
Stream with subscription Whether the title is included in your exact plan, country, and account; audio, subtitles, rating, and expiration information. Viewers who already subscribe and want the lowest additional cost.
Rent digitally Rental period, playback deadline, device restrictions, and whether the title is available in HD or 4K. A one-night watch when the film is not included in a subscription.
Buy digitally Whether the purchase is a license tied to a store account, plus supported devices and resolution. Films you expect to revisit without maintaining another subscription.
Buy a physical copy Disc format, region compatibility, edition, seller, stock, and included bonus features. A dependable Halloween rotation or a collection you want to keep.

If you prefer to own your Halloween rotation, look for a horror movie Blu-ray, a Halloween Blu-ray, or a classic horror collection. The relevant October 2024 US availability research recorded DVD and Blu-ray purchase paths for horror titles, including the 1978 Halloween. Edition, price, stock, seller, and region compatibility are volatile, so check those details before purchasing.

Why the October 2024 date matters

Netflix, Prime Video, Max, Hulu, Peacock, and other services license films for particular territories and periods. A title’s presence in a US guide on October 22, 2024 does not establish that it is available in the United States now, and it says nothing about availability in Canada, the UK, Australia, or another country. Even within the same service, an included title can move to a rental storefront or disappear when a license expires.

For a current search, enter the exact film title into a reputable availability guide and then confirm the result inside the service itself. Check four details before you recommend it to someone else: country, date, access tier, and rental or purchase status. Also verify subtitles, dubbed audio, age rating, and any expiration date shown in the app.

A simple Halloween viewing plan

  1. Pick the intensity: choose Psycho, The Birds, or American Psycho for suspense and ideas; choose Evil Dead Rise or Thanksgiving for graphic or exuberant violence.
  2. Pick the format: use As Above, So Below for found footage, Unfriended for screenlife horror, or Mononoke for animation.
  3. Check the access route: confirm whether the film is included with your subscription, rented, purchased, or available on disc.
  4. Check the audience fit: review the current rating and content warnings, especially for Evil Dead Rise, Thanksgiving, Annabelle, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
  5. Have a backup: streaming rights can change even during a seasonal movie marathon. Keep one classic, one modern title, and one rental or physical option in reserve.

One regional warning

A Netflix guide used for this historical list marked Annihilation as UK-only. That single example illustrates why regional assumptions are risky: a title listed in a Netflix article may not be available to US viewers, and a US listing may not apply elsewhere. It is not included as a US recommendation here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these horror movies still available on Netflix, Prime Video, or other services?

No. This is a historical US availability guide for October 2024. Streaming rights change by country, date, subscription tier, and licensing deal, so check each title in your current streaming guide and then confirm it inside the service.

Does “on Prime Video” mean the movie is free with Prime?

Not necessarily. A platform listing can mean included subscription streaming, digital rental, or digital purchase. Check the exact access label for your plan before assuming the movie is included.

What is the best horror movie here for a Halloween movie night?

For a classic, try Psycho or The Birds. For a modern slasher, choose Halloween (2018), Thanksgiving, or Scream. For supernatural gore, choose Evil Dead Rise.

The Bottom Line

For a US Halloween watch in the historical October 2024 lineup, begin with Pearl, Halloween (2018), Psycho, The Babadook, Evil Dead Rise, As Above, So Below, American Psycho, or Prime Video’s House of Spoils. Match the film to your preferred intensity and format, then verify the current service, subscription tier, rental status, and region before watching.
