The tradition includes European art comics, underground pamphlets, gay manga, BDSM romance, queer anthologies, sex-positive publishing and frank memoir. The most important books do more than present sexual imagery: they use eroticism to examine power, identity, fantasy, intimacy or the possibilities of the comics form.
This is therefore not a rigid numerical ranking. The selections below are organized by artistic influence, historical importance, storytelling and the different ways they approach adult sexuality. Several contain coercive or deliberately unsettling material, so their historical significance should not be confused with a contemporary endorsement of their sexual politics.
What makes an erotic comic worth reading?
A comic belongs on a list like this when erotic desire is a substantial part of its subject or structure—not merely because it contains nudity or an isolated sex scene. Strong examples also have a distinctive visual language, memorable characters, cultural influence or something meaningful to say about relationships and power.
That broad definition matters. Treating erotic comics as synonymous with hentai leaves out much of the medium’s history, including Italian avant-garde comics, North American underground work, gay erotic manga and modern queer publishing.

Landmark European erotic comics
Valentina — Guido Crepax
Guido Crepax’s Valentina is one of the clearest examples of eroticism becoming a formal experiment. Valentina moves through dreams, memories, historical settings, fashion imagery, cinema and literary references. The stories often feel less like conventional adventures than psychological collages.
Crepax’s fragmented layouts, sudden changes in scale and daring page design make the act of reading part of the experience. The eroticism is filtered through fantasy and visual association rather than reduced to a sequence of explicit events. For readers interested in the history of comics as an art form, Valentina is essential.
The Click! — Milo Manara
Milo Manara’s The Click! is among the most recognizable erotic comics of the late twentieth century. Its premise involves a device that removes a woman’s sexual inhibitions, allowing the story to move through voyeurism, humiliation and escalating loss of control. Manara’s polished line, cinematic compositions and fluid figures helped define the look of European adult comics for a generation.
It also demands a warning. The central mechanism compromises consent, and the book’s erotic charge depends on coercive control. It is historically influential, but it should not be presented as an uncomplicated example of sex-positive storytelling.
The Story of O — Pauline Réage and Guido Crepax
Crepax’s adaptation of Pauline Réage’s novel brings one of the best-known works of literary BDSM fiction into comics. His dense, stylized artwork gives the story an oneiric and psychologically charged quality, emphasizing ritual, costume, confinement and submission.
The book is important as an adaptation and as a record of how European comics approached erotic power during the period when adult albums were gaining cultural visibility. Its themes of ownership and domination are central, however, and it should be read as a work shaped by its own era rather than automatically treated as a guide to consensual BDSM.
Lost Girls — Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie
Published in completed form by Top Shelf Productions in 2006, Lost Girls reimagines Alice, Dorothy and Wendy as adults who meet at a European hotel in 1913. The book uses the characters and imagery of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan as starting points for an explicitly sexual meditation on imagination, repression and the stories adults inherit from childhood.

Melinda Gebbie’s colored artwork gives each section a distinct visual atmosphere, while the structure moves between personal recollection, fantasy and the political tensions of prewar Europe. The material connected to the characters’ earlier lives is deliberately provocative and uncomfortable. The main narrative, though, concerns adult versions of these familiar literary figures.

Black Kiss — Howard Chaykin
Black Kiss combines explicit sex with hard-boiled crime, noir lighting, violence and exploitation-film excess. Its original issues were packaged in plastic bags because of their content, an unusually blunt reminder of the publishing boundaries surrounding adult comics in the 1980s.
Chaykin’s book is not a romance and is not trying to offer a reassuring account of intimacy. Its appeal lies in the collision of pulp plotting, sexual transgression and aggressive graphic design. It is best understood as erotic crime comics: dirty, melodramatic and intentionally confrontational.
Omaha the Cat Dancer — Reed Waller and Kate Worley
It is easy to dismiss Omaha the Cat Dancer as anthropomorphic pornography, but that description misses the series’ ambition. Begun in underground comics and later collected by Kitchen Sink Press and other publishers, it follows a long-running cast through sex, romance, work, politics and personal conflict.
The anthropomorphic characters create distance from realism while allowing the creators to explore adult relationships with warmth and humor. Its serialized soap-opera structure is a major reason the series remains important: erotic scenes are part of the characters’ lives rather than the entire point of the book.

Celluloid — Dave McKean
Dave McKean’s largely wordless Celluloid uses erotic imagery as a visual and cinematic language. Instead of relying on dialogue to explain desire, it moves through association, surreal transformations and transitions that resemble editing in film.
The book is particularly useful for readers who want to see how comics can tell an erotic story without conventional narration. Its pictures invite interpretation, connecting physical desire with fantasy, art history and the act of looking. It received the Best Erotic Graphic Novel award for 2011, according to coverage cited by its publisher.

Gay erotic manga and queer publishing
The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame: Master of Gay Erotic Manga — Gengoroh Tagame
This collection gathers ten stories originally published between 1990 and 2012, along with a newer story. Tagame is one of the most influential creators in modern gay erotic manga, particularly for his direct treatment of gay male sexuality, fetishism, physicality and power.
The collection includes intense BDSM and sadomasochistic imagery. “Gay manga” is too broad a label to describe what readers will find here; this is not the same tradition as the softer romantic conventions often associated with commercial boys’-love fiction. Tagame’s work is important precisely because it represents a more specific and physically uncompromising erotic subculture.
Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It — edited by Anne Ishii, Graham Kolbeins and Chip Kidd
Massive widens the lens beyond one artist. Published by Fantagraphics in 2014, it combines comics by Japanese gay-manga creators with interviews, photography and contextual material. That mixture makes it both an anthology and a document of a creative community.
For a reader unfamiliar with gay erotic manga, Massive is a better starting point than a single-author collection because it demonstrates the range of artists, bodies, fantasies and visual approaches within the scene.
Modern sex-positive and relationship-focused comics
Sunstone — Stjepan Šejić
Originally a webcomic and later collected by Image Comics, Sunstone follows Ally and Lisa as a relationship develops around shared BDSM interests. Its most important contribution is its emphasis on communication, nerves, boundaries, humor and emotional vulnerability.
The erotic scenes matter, but the series is fundamentally a relationship story. It treats BDSM as something negotiated between people rather than as a shortcut to danger or abuse. That makes it a useful counterpoint to older works whose erotic tension depends on coercion. New redesigned 6-by-9-inch paperback editions were announced for release throughout 2026, alongside existing trade, hardcover, compendium and digital editions.

Smut Peddler is a landmark anthology rather than a single graphic novel. The 2014 edition contains 25 stories across 344 pages and presents erotic comics made by women for a broad readership. Its stories emphasize consent, queer identities, varied bodies, humor and sexual perspectives often marginalized by male-centered commercial pornography.

- Pack of 3 (3 boxes & 3 lids) - Short comic storage boxes. Easy assembly: See our fast fold instructions on the bottom of each comic box storage. Also, known as comic book boxes short, comic book short box and comic book bin.
The book’s importance extends beyond its contents. It helped demonstrate that sex-positive erotic comics could support a publishing community and a recognizable editorial philosophy. The later Smut Peddler Presents imprint continues that approach, with submission guidelines centered on sex positivity and consent.
Crossplay — Niki Smith
Niki Smith’s 148-page graphic novel takes place around an anime convention and combines erotic discovery with cosplay, fandom, friendship and gender exploration. It is marked Adults Only by Iron Circus, but its interest is not limited to its sexual content.
Crossplay belongs to a newer strain of erotic comics in which sexuality is tied to changing self-understanding. The convention setting gives the characters room to try on identities—literally and emotionally—while the story remains concerned with trust and relationships.
My Monster Boyfriend — edited by C. Spike Trotman
This full-color anthology expands erotic fantasy beyond human pairings, with stories involving monsters, robots, demons, aliens and spirits. Its premise allows contributors to use the impossible and the supernatural to explore attraction, difference and consent.
Like Smut Peddler, it is valuable as evidence of the range of contemporary independent erotic publishing. Its speculative premise also makes it a good choice for readers who prefer playful world-building to realistic romance.

Paying for It — Chester Brown
Paying for It is better classified as sexual memoir and political graphic nonfiction than as conventional erotic entertainment. Chester Brown recounts his experiences as a client of sex workers and argues for decriminalization and destigmatization.
The book belongs in the wider history of erotic comics because it treats sex as a social and political subject. Its focus is not seduction or fantasy, but the legal, moral and personal assumptions surrounding commercial sex. Readers interested in documentary-style comics may find it especially relevant.

A short history of the form
North American erotic comics have roots in the Tijuana bibles, cheaply produced unauthorized pamphlets that circulated widely from the 1920s through the 1940s. Their crude humor and improvised versions of famous characters bear little resemblance to the ambitious graphic novels that followed, but they established an underground market for explicit comics.
European creators such as Crepax and Manara helped make adult comics more visually sophisticated from the 1960s onward. In North America, underground and alternative publishers created space for work that mainstream comic distributors would not carry. Fantagraphics’ Eros Comix imprint later reprinted artists including Wally Wood and Frank Thorne and published more than 40 collected editions.
The contemporary field is broader still. Gay erotic manga, queer anthologies, BDSM romance, sex-work memoir and women-led sex-positive publishing have all challenged the assumption that erotic comics must be aimed at a heterosexual male reader.

FAQ
What is the best erotic comic book of all time?
There is no objective single winner. Valentina is a strong choice for visual innovation, Lost Girls for literary ambition, and Sunstone for relationship-focused BDSM storytelling.
Are erotic comics the same as hentai?
No. Erotic comics include European art comics, American underground work, gay erotic manga, queer anthologies, memoir, BDSM romance and many other traditions. Hentai is only one category within a much larger field.
Which erotic comics focus on consent?
Sunstone emphasizes communication and negotiated BDSM, while Smut Peddler is built around sex-positive, consent-centered anthology publishing. Individual stories should still be considered on their own terms.
Are these books suitable for all readers?
No. They are adult works and several contain explicit sex, violence, coercion, BDSM or disturbing power dynamics. Check the publisher’s content information before reading or recommending them.
The Bottom Line
The strongest erotic comics are not interchangeable. Valentina turns desire into avant-garde design; Black Kiss fuses sex with noir; Omaha the Cat Dancer builds a serialized adult drama; Tagame and Massive document gay erotic manga; and Sunstone and Smut Peddler represent a more openly consent-centered publishing culture. Taken together, they show that erotic comics are not a narrow genre but a wide-ranging part of comics history.
