For a legitimate Fire Stick anime setup today, Crunchyroll is the main surviving option from the original recommendation set. Funimation ended its website and app on April 2, 2024, and VRV was consolidated into Crunchyroll. Free and unofficial options require separate scrutiny because catalogs, licensing, security, and regional availability vary.

Best current starting point: install the official Crunchyroll app from the Amazon Appstore, then check the specific show’s audio, subtitle, and regional availability before subscribing. The app, plan names, catalog, and pricing can vary by country and billing platform.
What the original 2020 guide recommended
The original TechJunkie article recommended seven choices. Five were presented as official Amazon Appstore apps: Crunchyroll, Viewster, VRV, Crackle, and FunimationNow. FireAnime required sideloading, while Masterani Redux was a Kodi add-on. They were not equivalent recommendations: the first group represented recognizable streaming services, while the last two depended on unofficial software and streaming links.

The 2020 article’s prices and catalog descriptions are historical. Its quoted Crunchyroll price of $6.95 per month and FunimationNow price of $5.99 per month should not be treated as current prices. Crunchyroll announced multiple membership tiers in August 2020, with pricing and features varying by territory.
Crunchyroll: the best overall 2020 choice and the main current successor
In 2020, Crunchyroll was the strongest general-purpose recommendation for anime fans who wanted a large catalog, seasonal shows, simulcasts, subtitles, watchlists, and viewing history. Its Fire TV app supported both free ad-supported viewing for selected content and Premium access. Crunchyroll announced its Amazon Fire TV availability before the original article was published.
Its historical advantages were straightforward:
- A broad anime-focused catalog.
- Fast access to many new seasonal episodes.
- Free viewing for selected titles with advertising.
- Premium viewing with fewer restrictions and additional features.
- Official Fire TV distribution through the Amazon Appstore.
There were also limitations. The original article described some Fire OS app-stability concerns, but that was an editorial observation rather than a documented model-by-model test. Catalog size, simulcast timing, dubs, subtitle options, and plan features should not be copied from a 2020 article. Rights differ by title and country.
Crunchyroll is now the central successor to much of the old Crunchyroll, Funimation, and VRV ecosystem. Its official device guide lists Fire TV and Fire Stick support. That does not mean every Funimation feature, digital copy, watch-history item, or title transferred perfectly.
FunimationNow: historically best for English dubs, but discontinued
FunimationNow was a major 2020 recommendation for viewers who preferred English-language dubs. The original guide highlighted Funimation-licensed series including Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, Cowboy Bebop, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, and Sword Art Online. Those examples describe the 2020 service and should not be read as a current catalog guarantee.

Funimation’s website and app ended service on April 2, 2024. Users were directed toward Crunchyroll, although Crunchyroll notes that not every digital copy or piece of catalog functionality transferred. Former subscribers should try the same email address on Crunchyroll, check where the old subscription was billed, and contact support about continuing charges before purchasing another subscription.
Crunchyroll also should not be treated as uniformly dubbed. Audio and subtitle choices are title-specific and may vary by territory. Inspect the show’s language menu before assuming that a subtitle-first series has an English dub, or that a former Funimation title is available in the same format.
VRV: an attractive 2020 bundle that is no longer a current app choice
In October 2020, VRV appealed to viewers who wanted Crunchyroll anime alongside animation, gaming, science-fiction, and other niche programming. It historically supported account linking with Crunchyroll and could provide access to Crunchyroll Premium benefits across services.
Its value depended heavily on the U.S. catalog and the continued availability of its bundled channels. The original article’s comparison that VRV cost $3 more per month than Crunchyroll was a dated price statement, not a permanent pricing rule.
Crunchyroll announced in March 2022 that content was moving toward a unified Crunchyroll service. VRV should therefore be treated as a historical recommendation, not an app to seek out on a current Fire Stick.

Viewster: a historical free option, not a confirmed current recommendation
The 2020 guide described Viewster as a free, ad-supported service carrying anime, movies, and television programming. It was more useful for older or less prominent titles than for the newest major releases.

That description should remain firmly historical. The original article does not establish Viewster’s current ownership, Fire TV listing, catalog, or continued operation. Do not install an APK claiming to be Viewster simply because an old article mentioned the brand. If a service is unavailable in the Amazon Appstore, first check its official support pages and whether it has been replaced.
Crackle: free and legal when a title is actually available
Crackle was included as a free, ad-supported Sony service rather than a dedicated anime platform. The original article mentioned anime such as Assassination Classroom, Afro Samurai, and Samurai Champloo, but streaming rights change frequently.
Crackle’s historical role was useful for occasional free viewing, not dependable access to current anime or simulcasts. Treat it as a general free-streaming service and verify the title in the current app. Free services may involve advertising, smaller catalogs, regional restrictions, and frequent changes.
FireAnime and Masterani Redux: why they should not be ranked alongside official apps
Warning: FireAnime and Masterani Redux were unofficial options, not documented licensed competitors to Crunchyroll, Funimation, or Crackle.

The original article described FireAnime as an Android TV and Fire OS application that could use multiple online video sources and external players such as VLC or MX Player. It did not establish that the linked content was licensed or that the developer and download source were trustworthy.
Masterani Redux was described as an unofficial Kodi add-on that scraped a streaming site for anime links. Kodi itself is legitimate software, but third-party add-ons can link to unauthorized streams, disappear without warning, or introduce security and privacy risks.
Unknown APKs and unofficial repositories can expose a Fire Stick to malware, tracking, broken updates, unstable playback, and account-security problems. A VPN does not provide distribution rights, guarantee anonymity, or make an unauthorized stream legal. Sideloading and installing Kodi are also not the same as “jailbreaking” a device, and neither changes the licensing status of the content.

If an app cannot be found, do not immediately download a mirror APK. It may be unavailable because of geography, an unsupported Fire TV model, an Amazon account-region mismatch, discontinuation, or a renamed service.
How to install an official anime app on Fire Stick
- Open Search on the Fire TV home screen.
- Search for the service’s official name.
- Select the verified Amazon Appstore listing.
- Choose Get or Download.
- Open the app and sign in or create an account.
- Confirm that the plan, catalog, audio, and subtitle options are available in your country.
Availability can vary by Fire TV Stick generation, Fire OS version, storage, resolution support, remote generation, Amazon account region, and country. The original article did not provide a model-by-model compatibility benchmark, so one Fire Stick should not be assumed to behave identically to every other model.

Choosing the right service by viewing habit
- Most viewers: Start with Crunchyroll for the broadest anime-focused experience represented by the original recommendations.
- Seasonal simulcasts: Crunchyroll was the strongest 2020 choice and remains the central current option, subject to regional rights and title availability.
- English dubs: FunimationNow was historically the standout. Today, check Crunchyroll’s audio menu for each title rather than assuming every former Funimation title has transferred with the same dub.
- Free legal viewing: Use currently available official ad-supported services, including any eligible Crunchyroll or general-streaming offerings, and confirm the specific title first.
- Older or niche anime: Free services such as Crackle could occasionally help in 2020, but catalogs change and no service should be assumed to carry a particular old title.
- Broader niche entertainment: VRV was historically attractive, but it is not a current recommendation.
- Security-conscious households: Prefer official Appstore apps and avoid unknown APKs and unofficial Kodi add-ons.
Troubleshooting common Fire Stick problems
The app is not listed
- Search from the Fire TV interface rather than relying on an old article’s download link.
- Check the service’s official device-support page.
- Confirm the Amazon account’s country and billing region.
- Check whether the app has been discontinued, renamed, or replaced.
- Do not use an unknown APK as a substitute for an ended service.
Playback buffers or fails
- Try another title to determine whether the problem is title-specific.
- Restart the Fire Stick and router.
- Check storage space and app updates.
- Force-stop and reopen the app.
- Sign out and back in.
- Test without a VPN or custom DNS configuration.
- Check the service’s official outage or support page.
- Reinstall only from the Amazon Appstore or the vendor’s verified source.
A VPN can increase latency and interfere with regional licensing. It is not a guaranteed buffering fix.
Subtitles or dubs are missing
The title may not include that language, the option may be restricted in your territory, the episode may not have received a dub yet, or the Fire TV app may expose language controls differently from the web player. Open the title’s audio and subtitle menu rather than assuming the entire service has the same language coverage.
A former Funimation account no longer works
Try the same email address on Crunchyroll, identify whether the old subscription was billed directly or through Amazon, Roku, Google Play, or another platform, and contact Crunchyroll support about unresolved charges or migration issues. Review billing before starting a second subscription.

Current buying advice
A compatible Fire TV device and, for the broadest anime-focused catalog, a current Crunchyroll account are the most relevant purchases for this topic. Check the official Fire TV Stick listing for current models and specifications, and check Crunchyroll’s official device guide before buying.
Do not use the old $6.95 Crunchyroll or $5.99 Funimation prices as current figures. Subscription tiers, prices, advertising, simultaneous streams, and billing methods may differ by country and purchase channel. Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Max, and other services may complement an anime subscription, but they are broader entertainment services rather than automatic replacements for a dedicated anime catalog.
Finally, do not buy a VPN or another product on the assumption that it makes unofficial anime streams legal or guarantees access to another country’s catalog.
