TuneIn is the best default choice for most people who want one internet-radio app: it combines a broad station directory with support for phones, web, connected cars, and other devices. Choose iHeartRadio instead for U.S. commercial and local radio, Audials Play for discovery and recording, or an official broadcaster app when one network or station is what matters most. No app guarantees that every listed station will play in every country.

The catalog figures above are vendor claims, not independent counts. TuneIn’s figure describes its free service; Audials’ figure is its own claim. Neither number proves that a particular station is available or working where you are.
What counts as an internet-radio app?
Internet radio usually means listening to a live audio stream over the internet. That can be an AM/FM station simulcast, a station that exists only online, or a news, sports, talk, public-radio, or music station from another country. Some apps also bundle podcasts, playlists, and personalized artist stations, but those features do not make an on-demand music service a full radio directory.

A directory helps you find streams from many stations; a broadcaster’s own app distributes that broadcaster’s programming. A station can appear in a directory but still be unavailable because its stream is down, its rights are restricted, or its listing is stale. How to choose a radio app
Check the stations you actually listen to
Start with your regular stations, not the app’s headline catalog count. Search by the station’s call sign as well as its brand name and city. If a station is missing or will not play, it may lack a public stream, use a proprietary app, have a stale directory listing, or be restricted by music, sports, or other streaming rights.
Separate app advertising from station advertising
“Ad-free” can refer to different things: visual ads in the app, an audio pre-roll supplied by the app, or commercials already carried in a broadcaster’s stream. Some platforms may also insert or substitute ads based on location, device, or account. TuneIn says its Pro purchase removes TuneIn-provided pre-roll and visual ads, not advertising included in the station stream. Its explanation of the distinction is at TuneIn Pro and Premium.
Prioritize the features you will use
Useful differences include search by location or genre, favorites, recommendations, now-playing information, an equalizer, sleep timer, alarm, recording, and podcast support. Do not treat podcast or on-demand downloads as offline live radio: a live station generally still needs an internet connection.

Look for an actual CarPlay or Android Auto audio interface if you intend to use the app in a car; phone playback alone is not the same as a usable car interface. Also check support for the specific smart speaker, TV, or audio system you own. TuneIn advertises Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, smart speakers, Sonos, Bose, Roku, and automotive integrations on its device page. Do not assume another app supports the same devices without confirming it.

Consider location, account, and privacy friction
International streams may be blocked outside a broadcaster’s home market, particularly when sports or music rights are involved. Before enabling location access or creating an account, decide whether you need location-based station suggestions, cross-device favorites, or personalization. For a subscription, review the renewal and cancellation terms shown at checkout in your country and app store.
TuneIn: best all-around internet-radio app
What it offers
TuneIn is the strongest starting point if you want one broad directory rather than an app tied to one broadcaster. TuneIn’s support page says its free service includes more than 100,000 radio stations and 5.7 million podcasts; those are TuneIn’s stated catalog figures, not an independent audit. Its device information lists web, iPhone, Android, tablets, smart-home products, Sonos, Bose, Roku, and connected-car options, and specifically advertises Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Free, Pro, and Premium are not interchangeable
The free service is ad-supported. TuneIn’s support documentation lists Pro as a one-time $9.99 purchase and says it removes TuneIn-provided pre-roll and visual display ads, but not commercials inside the broadcaster’s stream. That is a dated price signal from TuneIn documentation available in August 2026, not a guarantee of the price offered now in every country or storefront. See TuneIn’s Pro-versus-Premium explanation.

TuneIn Premium is a separate subscription, described by TuneIn as adding content such as sports access, audiobooks, and selected commercial-free news or music stations. It is not simply another name for Pro’s app-ad removal. TuneIn outlines Premium at its Premium page; check the current offer and terms before subscribing.

Who should choose it
Choose TuneIn if you want a cross-platform directory, use CarPlay or Android Auto, or want radio alongside podcasts and other audio. It is less compelling if your only priority is one broadcaster’s own content, or if you expect a paid tier to eliminate every commercial. Station rights and feed quality vary, so test your regular stations before paying.
iHeartRadio: best for U.S. local and commercial radio
What it offers
iHeartRadio combines live radio with podcasts, playlists, artist radio, and news. Its app information emphasizes thousands of live and local AM/FM stations across music, news, sports, talk, and comedy. The company says its free app is available on more than 200 platforms, including web, iOS, Android, Alexa, and automobiles; see iHeartRadio.
Paid features and limits
iHeart describes its Plus and All Access offerings as adding features such as ad-free listening, on-demand music, replay, and offline downloads. These benefits apply to supported content and features; they do not mean that arbitrary live radio streams can be downloaded for offline listening. Plan availability and exact terms can change, so check iHeart’s current plan information at signup.
Who should choose it
It is a good fit for listeners following U.S. commercial stations, particularly iHeart-owned stations, who also want music features and podcasts in the same service. For obscure international stations or a broadcaster-neutral directory, start elsewhere.

Audials Play: best for discovery and recording tools
What it offers
Audials says Audials Play offers more than 150,000 stations worldwide and promotes station recommendations, an equalizer, podcasts, and recording. These are vendor-described features and catalog figures. See Audials’ product page for its current description.
Recording requires care
Audials says a station can be recorded only when it outputs unencrypted audio and lacks effective protection against recording. That is a technical qualification, not a statement that every recording is legal. Copyright and time-shifting rules vary by country and use; recording does not grant permission to redistribute a broadcast or turn it into a licensed music download. Check what the app actually saves, where it stores recordings, and whether the station’s ads and interruptions are included.
Who should choose it
Consider Audials if radio discovery and recording controls matter more to you than a minimal player. It may be unnecessarily complex for someone who simply wants to tap a local station and listen.

Radio Garden for map-based exploration
Radio Garden is a natural option for exploring stations by geography rather than beginning with a conventional station list. Its official site is Radio Garden. Catalog coverage, playback restrictions, pricing, and current device support are not established here, so verify that the cities and stations you care about play in your location.

myTuner Radio and Simple Radio
myTuner Radio and Simple Radio are alternatives to try if a station is not easy to find in the larger apps or you prefer another directory. Current catalog size, ad policy, pricing, favorites syncing, and CarPlay or Android Auto support should be checked in their current product listings; do not choose based on unverified feature or station-count claims.
When an official broadcaster app is the better choice
If you mainly listen to one public-radio network, local station, or broadcaster, start with its own app or website. It may carry the station’s authoritative live feed, schedule, local content, or programs that an aggregator cannot distribute in your region. Examples include NPR, BBC Sounds, and Audacy, as well as individual station apps. A direct app is not automatically available everywhere: program and streaming rights still apply.

Test stations before subscribing
- Make a short list. Write down your five most-used stations, including call signs, cities, and any international stations.
- Search each station in the free app. Try the call sign and station name. Play each result long enough to confirm it is the right station and not just a similarly named listing.
- Try the broadcaster directly if a stream fails. Search the station’s official app or website to distinguish a directory problem from a stream or rights issue.
- Test the intended device. If you listen in a car, confirm the app appears in your CarPlay or Android Auto interface and that your favorites are practical to reach.
- Assess data use on your own phone. Check the phone’s per-app cellular-data counter after an hour of listening. Consumption varies with bitrate, codec, buffering, and duration.
- Read the paid-plan terms. Confirm which ads or features the plan changes, its current local price, and its renewal and cancellation rules.
Troubleshoot a station that will not play
- Play another station. If others work, the issue may be that station’s stream rather than the app or connection.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to check whether the connection path is the problem.
- Close and reopen the app, then search again by the station’s call sign or try an alternate listing.
- Remove and re-add the station to favorites if the saved entry may be stale.
- Try the broadcaster’s official website or app. If it also fails, the stream may be down or restricted in your region.
- Update the app and operating system. On Android, check whether battery optimization is stopping background playback.
- If the station fails across apps and networks, wait and try again later rather than repeatedly reinstalling the directory app.
Final choice
For a single starting point, choose TuneIn for breadth and device reach. Choose iHeartRadio for U.S. local and commercial radio, Audials Play if recording tools are important, or a broadcaster’s own app for a particular station or network. Whatever you pick, confirm your own stations play before paying: the service with the largest claimed catalog is not necessarily the one with the right working stream for you.
